Starship Dimensions...for all the sci-fi geeks out there

Stumbled upon this site today. Made some rather interesting discoveries which upset me a bit (though i was much more upset that i was apparently such a geek that i could be upset about stuff like this). If you ever wondered ow bi one scifi ship is compared to another you can find out here.

So to unleash the geekiness. I learned today that te Enterprise D is just over a third the size of a romulan D'deridex class warbird, which is in turn only slightly smaller than a Star Destroyer. That surprised me quite a bit since i always imagined a star destroyer to be a really big fucking ship but now i find out that its actually not a lot bigger than a Romulan warship. And to add insult to injury its even smaller than an EA Omega Class Destroyer from Babylon 5. I mean come on, i love B5 but human sips in that series were weak, how can they be several times the size of te Enterprise! Well no matter even if its 10 times the size i bet even the NX class would blow the Omega out of the sky.

Just to show you what i mean, here is an example. These two pics are in scale.

Now i ask you how is that possible, since it should be obvious that the Sovereign class is a much more awesome ship but look at the size ofit.

And to all the non geeks, please disregard this tread as there is no way i can come out of it looking good and with any measure of self respect left.

B5 was a much better scifi show than star trek. But I still watch both. They need to bring Legend of the Rangers back or some B5 series

This just distracted me for too long. Excellent link, thanks for the heads up.

Sweet, they even have the sathanas from freespace 2

Love it when you spend half the game trying to destroy just one of the sathanas and then at the end a whole fleet of them pops up, made my shit my pants.

Agreed... never saw the appeal of star trek.

You are comparing 24th vs 23rd century tech which is unfair. Maybe a Vorlon/Shadow Planet Destroyer/First Ones vs Enterprise D would be a better match. Even the Asgard would kick ass

But the Asgard weaponry is never really explained...isn't the point of the Ancients to have an aire of mystery and be a power to lust for?

Breen battle cruiser FTW. Big fucking ship.

The pic you posted is Enterprise E (Sovereign class), not Enterprise D (Galaxy class)

I hate all this sci fi starship comparisons. Like, it's fucking fiction for FFS. How do you make a comparison? (Star Trek vs Star Wars always amuses me)

And even a lot of 'canon' facts for series contradict each other. (ie Jem Hadar fighter that'd take like 15 quantum torpedoes in one fight, but in another fight gets blown up after one phaser hit)

edit: ah. I see what you did with the scaling thing... you were suppose to talk about galaxy class, not sovereign class

here's a good link to size comparison of various starships from sci fi shows

Always bugs me too - they're completely different things. Comparing them on the same merits outside of a "I personally prefer A to B" sense is pretty absurd to me.

Yeah. Considering SW is really fantasy in space, at least from the beginning. No real basis on actual science what so ever, and whatever scientific basis is put together mainly from fandom and from novelizations. (which is kinda amusing since some of the 'science' of SW is based upon X wing PC game)

At least Star Trek is created from some sort of basis on science. (even if they goof up after while and 'hard' science of Star Trek isn't really established until the Next Generation)

You're all nerds.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...Super Star Destroyer FTW.

I really like them both (well, only TNG and DS9 as far as ST is concerned), but they aren't even remotely similar when it comes to the way the universe is perceived.

I think you're right to call SW more "Science Fantasy" than "Science Fiction" - the focus was on traditional character archetypes used in classic mythology which was all just veiled in this subtly futuristic universe where we aren't mean to understand the details regarding how the universe arrived at the point they were at.

Star Trek, on the other hand, seems to have just the opposite feel. Strong emphasis on the historical lineage of events that led to the founding of the Federation and the string of events leading up and encompassing the creation of the Enterprise and it's explorations. Much higher emphasis on the technical details.

Wow. I am a fucking nerd and a half.

Seriously. That game was epic. I'm actually playing through it again right now.

I wanted to see some asgard ships in there.

I couldn't find any Dune ships either, even though that would be kinda hard.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Mar-28-2008 09:07:

holy fuck they have robotech ships in there, awesome.

*yawns*

that's precisely why star trek sucked when compared to shows like B5, and the new BSG. i still enjoyed parts of the next gen tho.

"reversing the power coupling to retro aid the gamma particle accelerator" = heroes save the day. who gives a shit?

and at the start of each new episode everyone is back to their awesome selves again. no plot and little character development.
