Tracks from your early days...

No, it's not a "POST YOUR FAVORITE TRACKS OF ALL TIME" or a "EDM WAS SO MUCH BETTER BACK THEN" thread.

I found some CDs today of my earlier EDM years, and the stuff on it is quite hilarious. Absolutely embarrassing to share, but here are a few anyways .

Marc Et Claude - I Need Your Lovin' (Like The Sunshine)
OceanLab - Clear Blue Water
Warp Brothers vs. Aquagen - Phatt Bass
Bunch of DJ Mystik/Mangoo shit...
The Love Bite - Side By Side*
Spiller - Groove Jet*
Soul Du Jour - Here We Go Again*
Sylver - Turn The Tide*
Res - They Say Vision*
Fragma - Everytime You Need Me
York - Farewell To The Moon (Watergate Remix) (I'd still rock this out today )
Robin Fox - Its Gonna Be OK

*Apparently I had something for fag house...

YES SIR. Hardcore raving back in those days...as you can tell from my username and avatar .

And a few that I'm not so ashamed of are:

Jon Vesta - Gull
Amara - Pulse
Shane - C'est Musique (Armin Van Buuren's Rising Star Remix)
Mekka - Diamondback
Planet Perfecto - Bullet In The Gun (Saturday Mix)
Goldenscan - Sunrise (Pulser 6 A.M. Mix)
Solar Stone - Seven Cities
Rank 1 - Airwave
Fire & Ice stuff...

These were on different CDs...I think you can see the growth.

I think it would be really interesting to see what other people were listening to, specially from users who are dubbed as "elitest" or "know it alls." I know you regulars who have grown into the house/techno scene were on the same boat .

I found a tape a couple of weeks ago, with the likes of
dallas superstars - helium
Some aweful remix of Rhythm is a dancer
Motorcycle - as the rush comes
Warrior - Warrior
Chicane - Saltwater (remix)
ATB - 9 pm till I come
Etc.

Not too embarressing mostly...

'Groove Jet' is awesome

I'm still listening to the same stuff I did back then. Prodigy, Orbital etc.

Then again, there are some turkeys in everyone's collection...

I also have a strange fixation for bootlegs of tracks. Good or bad, doesn't matter. I just need 'em.

What is to be ashamed of of these track?

Posted by digitalEyes on Mar-28-2008 20:55:

Well, honestly the one single track that began my journey into the world of EDM was Orbital's Halcyon + On + On. My dad had it in his music folder on his harddrive and I was absolutely hooked. I loved the place in my mind it took me, and I was able to connect it with those dreams I had (and that everyone has) of that beautiful place you long for, your paradise. This was probably in 2001-2002 when I was about 14. I told my dad I really loved it, and he introduced me to a co-worker of his that was all about the EDM scene. This guy showed me di.fm and it just took off from there. Amazing though, that Orbital track just melted over me and I've been stuck in the electronica bubble for a good 5-6 years or so

Could you post a reply for me? By know you should be able to, since it looks I'm among the seniors over here when looking at age...

Well, let's not:

Please explain: what do you mean with the Hardcore and Rave? Fragma, Oceanlab, Spiller isn't.
Would expect more like: Marusha, Westbam, Sequential One, Technohead, Mark'Oh, Hardsequencer, RMB, Members of Mayday.

Then I think it would be best that you explain what you meant in the other topic.
You have noticed I have been posting tracks for my early days in other topics.

Maybe you should just stay on topic. If you have other business with him take it to PM or something.

I think there are more topics which go off topic than topics that stay on topic, but I got the message, just don't know what I'm going to do with it...anyway I'm going to sleep so you problem solved.

I remember that when i started listening to music and buying albums when i was 15, i bought and listened all these albums at the same time (some like the orbital one were just released!):

Prodigy- "Music for The Jilted Generation" (Big Beat-mostly)

Rage Against The Machine- "Evil Empire" (a cross between hip-hop and hardcore?)

Orbital- "In Sides" (IDM/Ambient/Electronica)

Slayer- "Divine Intervention" (Thrash Metal)

F.S.O.L- "Lifeforms" (IDM/Ambient/Electronica)

Blind Guardian- "Somewhere Far Beyond" (Power/Epic Metal)

I equally enjoyed all of them! (each one in a different way!)

I didn't mean genres, it was a figure of speech for my many nights of being completely smashed on substances...

As for other releases I remember having a fancy for, Tunnel Trance Force rings a bell .

Wonderful track. Good track to get into EDM with. I started with:
Robert Miles - Children (first track on a mixtape that was played for me in '96 to get me into EDM shortly before my first rave)
Underworld - Second toughest in the infants
**Edit: I just realized it was Dubnobasswithmyheadmand Not 2nd toughest. Dubnobass was way better than 2nd toughest if I remember correctly.

These were the 2 biggies to get me started. From there it went to various CD's I knew nothing about and a lot of mixtape exploration.
Thomas Michael
Christopher Lawrence (when he was nothing more than a local LA DJ)
Dan EFEX
Theeo
RAW
DJ Dan
Sasha and Digweed

Good mix of styles. Ahhhh the early days.

Regarding Halcyon + on + on...I hope you've heard their live version where they mix Bon Jovi - "Shot through the heart" and Belinda Carlisle - "Heaven is a place on earth" into Halcyon and it's one of the craziest things I've ever heard. Of course after they bring those in they start running the samples backwards and stuff. How they knew those 2 songs would go together along with Halcyon at the same time...I'll never figure out.

Go here:
http://www.loopz.co.uk/begin.html
Click Audio(live) at the top. Listen to Part 2 which has Halcyon in it.
The mp3 is not as good it's a less than 2 min sample so listen to the Real audio clip. I first heard this on an Orbital Promo VHS tape in '97 a friend of mine had and it went with live footage of them. Man...that takes me back.

Nice. By any chance, you have any sets by him from around that time? Would be interesting to hear what he played back then.

Posted by lcid on Mar-31-2008 17:01:

Ace of Base - Beautiful Life
Robert Miles - Children
Paul Van Dyk - Another Way

are probably the 3 songs that influenced my obsession with EDM.

i've got a ton of old CDs sitting around with cheesy trance tunes on them as well, but most aren't worth mentioning.

His first CD (I think called Rise), I can look it up later, had a lot of tracks from his mixtape "Prophecy". Only 4 tracks on the CD were not on Prophecy. The 4 tracks not on Prophecy were awesome but Prophecy has got to be one of the single best mixes ever put together. You can put that tape on and really zone out.

Unfortunately I don't have that tape any more but you can probably find that CD. It's an acceptable substitute.

Edit:
Yup it was Rise
http://www.discogs.com/release/134484

I also had a 12" of probably his first big track "navigator". It captured that '96 - '98 scene vibe kinda well. Not sure if I still have it though. If you can find that you can get an idea of what he was like then. I actually have barely heard any of his stuff since '99.
