If we could only have parties like this in Montreal I think it would revive the scene. Do you agree?

Forget about all this minimal and electro crap and go back to the basics - music that you want dance your ass off to all night - even sober.

Times are changing, you better get used to it, or you'll blend to the background!

Has it occurred to you that maybe other people dont like the same music as you?

How is hard techno going to revive the scene?

The scene has gone in a direction you dont like, I dont like it all that much either but its the way shit works.

Oh, and some would say you NEED drugs/lots of booze to enjoy the kind of music you've posted.

That track is pretty minimal

Drum patterns used as melodies FTW

Im complete opposite, I used to be able to dance all night at Aria sober when it was techno! So much energy in techno its hard to not move! These days there is more going on in the music but if I wanna dance past 3am sober I need hard beats that dont make me think only move.

I miss the good old hard techno as well. Remember Chris Liebing at Swirl 2005? That was the shizzat! Now he's even shifted to a more minimal style.

Here's his 2005 Mayday set, nice badass beats:

All in all, you should'nt need to worry. 2008 will see schranz and techno techno djs leaving the minimal sphere. All in all, I think that's a pretty good thing. That means less posers and bandwagonners in minimal techno and microhouse. Please leave it to the real fans

I know exactely what you mean! Also the music they play lately is very blended - sometimes it sounds like the same track all night long.
I went to that resolution party and the music was really boring. I mean it was creative and sounded cool but I can guarantee you if some upbeat techno (not exatcly hard techno) were played or even some older trance the crowd would have been way more exicited.

I really miss Friday nights at ARIA a few years back. I used to bring new people to the scene there and they'd thank me for bringing them and were dying to go again.

Now when I bring a new person to say stereo or circus they don't really care and don't see what's the big deal. They are usually bugging me to go and think I am wierd and wonder what I see in the music. That is probably the main reason the scene is dead. The music now is really only enjoyed by a subgroup of people.

Anyways, there nothing you can do. I just wait for a good techno dj and go to those shows only. It's cheaper that way I guess.

Anyone think we could ever get Jeff Mills to play in Montreal?

You keep contradicting yourself dude.

You say you want techno like Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills, but you say you hate minimalism.

Basically, what you like is upbeat, harder techno.

Don't mix that with minimalism.

Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills are sone of the major advocates for stripped-down techno.

Minimalism doesn't mean it has to be slow.

This is so true. I remember the night I went to Aria and heard techno I was instantly addicted! It changed my life. Everytime I would bring someone new, they would have the best time of there life. Now I bring out people who have never been and it just isnt the same. Im allmost emberassed to be part of the scene here now...

You know what I mean.. I am not a DJ so I am not an expert on the names of everything, but I've been going to raves for over 10 years and I know what sounds good and I know what I've seen. Uplifting happy music is what people like (of course some don't, like you) espcially new people to the scene. What is more popular? The Chill out tent or the main stage? Why do you think the scene has shrunk so much here then? I've never heard someone say oh that music was too fast and uplifting. I have heard from many many people that this DJ is not really uplifting it's kinda boring.

Posted by fullhouse on Mar-29-2008 20:07:

embarrassed?
you're a loser
go listen to kevin energy and trancecore in your garage and pop speed like its ritz bits, that's what your style has evolved into
you're not even worthy of the scene hahaha

Posted by fullhouse on Mar-29-2008 20:10:

i just read your post
so you like that happy hard style
go on rave.ca and look it up, you'll find your scene
but dont come back and say our music embarasses you
i just might have to pull a chuck norris...

Posted by Dj Nacht on Mar-29-2008 20:46:

Yup, the scene could be better.

That's for sure.

But we still got I Love Neon, Piknic Electronik, MUTEK, and the occasional mirrorballs/dizzyphunk/microzoo/noerg partys

Yeah you just summed it all up right there. Winter can get boring when there is no piknik every weekend.

We need to make the most of it, and give a motivation to promoters to give us more forward-thinking music.

I'm not talking about the "conventional" club music scene (including tribe, which occasionnally brings a more "risqu" artist), which is pretty healthy at the time.

But the "real" underground music scene needs to be revigorated a little.

First thing first, DJs and artists need to be able to make a living off it here, in order to stop the massive exodus to berlin.

Posted by julien2 on Mar-29-2008 22:47:

Oh and it's quite interesting to see that one of the healthiest scenes in Montreal is the whole blog-house movement covered by Neon, Peer Pressure, High Food, etc.

This has even become a problem for Clifford. He told me recently he refrained from booking certain artists because he was embarassed to bring them in empty venues.

And this, my friend, is a real problem.

Montreal is now kind of enjoying a "party-forward-thinking-music-very-open" reputation which was gained a couple of years ago by Mutek and Musique Risque. But the word is going around the world right now that it is not so true, and Montreal is losing its edge.

Of course there is supply-demand ping pong game to take into consideration.

But more than that, it is a social/cultural problem much more deep than this. However, this forum is not the place to discuss this. But just talk to Pheek and he'll explain you what I mean.

Anyways, I just hope we'll see support when we really need it, like when the M_nus crew will come in Montreal for their 10-city tour, for the minimal/tech house scene

Or when there are dubstep events (dubstep is blooming in Montreal ), check out Montreal Sub Syndicate, they throw awesome parties. And come support Piknic when they collaborate with Ninja Tune to promote the dubstep, dub, ragga, grime sounds of this world
