How do you memorize melodies?

I was working on a track yesterday and I couldn't come up with a consistent melody while working on the track but it finally came when I went off to sleep. I tried remembering it by mimicking the notes on a keyboard and playing them out loud for 2 minutes but 30 seconds after I stopped I had already forgotten it... sad because I hanged on it pretty long...

How do you guys remember your melodies?

why don't you record it ? ... open your sequencer choose a vst then start claping your keyboard save and have a nice sleep then

If it's actually memorable, I'll be able to whistle it a few times and then remember it without doing any of those things.

Usually, I don't. Le sigh.

So, I just come up with a new one.

I grab my cell phone and record myself using the little voice note recorder. Seems to work for the most part.

+1 Often when I'm at work, I start comping melodies in my head - and if it's something I'd like to use, I grab my cell phone and record it humming or whistling. Same happens sometimes while I lay in bed trying to sleep. But I'm too embarrassed to start humming to my phone with my girl next to me in bed.

Try it, maybe she'll think you're doing it for her. Win x 2

i instantly forget the tracks im dreaming of when i try to reproduce them, their pretty vauge in my mind so if i press one key wrong it will disapear. i think i need to learn how to picture it on the piano in my mind when i wake up and not touch any tools before im certain. but i also dream about the structure efex and stuff and thats even more impossible imo.

well, your mobile phone goes everywhere with you, right? most mobile phones have a voice recorder...

use it!

personly i have trouble remembering melodies. i thinks its becuase once i find something i like i record it right away then move onto another part. this makes it tough to go back to a song and take off from where i left off, even if i know the scale or whatever. i need to know exactly what i have played to be ble to add to it with out going or moving into another direction.

thats why when i hear that most people can produce or at least lay out the foundation for a song in one day/ or sitting, this is very improtant to the whole prosses so you can maintain the vibe and feel for the song before you go to bed and wake up forgetting or feeling a new vibe

but really to answer your question i just record something once i'm feeling it, trying to keep something in your head or trying to whistle it out or whatever technique just sounds crazy
