Damn, losing a job really sucks. Best of luck to you and apply for unemployment ASAP!!!

It'll help you out in the meantime.

Did they give you any type of compensation?

What kind of work do you do? I have a lot of contacts in Dallas that might help.

I get April's salary and health benefits.

Then there was a 2K bonus check I was promised in June. They said they would give that to me in addition to April's salary if I sign a paper promising that I won't file for unemployment. I have 3 days to decide and bring the papers back. I'm not sure which route I want to take yet.

steve- i do art production (print advertising/graphic design)

The 2K check sounds good, but it doesn't help you if you have to wait till June.

You would only get about 70% of what you make on unemployment, but you could stay on it longer if needed.

My opinion: Take the bonus if you can get another job by mid-April. If not, go with unemployment.

Also, to ensure they don't lie to the state to deny you benefits (happened to my wife), say you did design work for a friend and give them his/her address. They'll send that person an acknowledgement letter to check. If they don't receive a response you automatically get your benefits, based on your salary from last year. There's a reason they're dangling the carrot in front of you, and its not because its what's in your best interest...

I would get my bonus on April 15th, and that would help really well. But that's just the thing, I don't know if I'll be able to find a job in a month. The economy is sucking more each day and I'm afraid it will be rough finding employment. So I'm trying to think of which route to take. I don't think I could even get by with just unemployment - so I really need a job fast anyways. I keep going back and forth on the idea.

Well, if you get the bonus on the 15th, then I would consider taking the money. The only bad thing is that if you do end up filing for unemployement, they'll probably sue you for the bonus amount.

You seem like an intelligent person, so I don't think you'll have trouble finding a job.

sorry steph, i know the feeling. i been out of work since february. my mistake was resigning instead of letting them fire me. no unemployment checks for me. i decided to take a few weeks off instead of looking for a job asap. now im running low on funds. don't make that mistake.

My dad is shitting bricks because out of 7500 employed BP/Wood Group/Mustang Engineering people in Houston alone, 5000 if not more jobs are expected to be lost by the end of this year. That's a fuck load considering the necessity needed in oil production in terms of barrel prices these days. It's scary that my dad now has time to talk on the phone, work around the house, and go to church (as silly as that may sound). Last year, my dad spent weekends in his office working on stuff, and I'd be lucky to hear a "hello" from him in a single week. He is sure he is going to get laid off. It has happened in the past. The problem is, getting a new job. The way things are now, I seriously doubt my dad will pick up another position in Project Manager for Upstream Operations. I hope things don't worsen from there for the guy.

That being said, my hours went from 32 last week to 19 this week at the coffee shop. I bitched out at my boss because of it. Pretty lame, but I don't blame them. I blame the $3.26/gallon I paid today for filling up my Honda, the $200 in groceries I paid last week at HEB (and trust me, that shit was NOT worth 200), and the highest electric bill I've ever seen or heard of (in a two bedroom apt.). I have a few friends in design that are missing out in school due to these gas prices. It's just a fucking shame that it's affecting even students trying to get an education. It all draws back on the economy though.

I wish you tons of luck Steph. Hopefully you'll pick up something pretty soon. A few of my friends have been laid off from work as well, and they are going bananas trying to find ways of making money. I RISKED Winter Music Conference bigtime, even by flying stand-by and staying with my cousin Fernando in Miami which saved me bunches. I was procrastinating it by a lot because of this whole laying off crap I keep hearing.

Only time will tell how long this will last.

I hear ya! I rarely fill up my tank anymore and I don't spend $200 on H.E.B (ever)

I do have HD everything and that's expensive, but its worth it.
