Jeff Mills

Might as well.

According to Discogs: "Jeff Mills is one of the biggest American names in techno..."

Mainstream? Maybe. Cheesy? Not really.
Some fav. tunes:

Jeff Mills - Berlin; The Bells
X-103 - Eruption
DJ Hell - Allerseelen (Jeff Mills Remix)

Techno pioneer as far as production goes, techno failure as far as DJ'ing goes.

Man couldn't match a beat to save his soul.

That's one of the most skilled dj I've seen live.

He's coming to Hawaii in June.

Can't wait.

Hawaii doesn't really get banging techno acts, I'm wondering how people are going to take it.

no one can play well under the influence of crack

His DEMF sets are legendarily bad - awful bad. Pathetic.

I've seen him three times, and each time was worse than the last.

Edit: Here's one of the reviews from MWTA of his 2007 closing set:

quote:

*Jeff Mills*

It was quite delightful to have everyone in the festival gather around in the Main Stage for the closing set of DEMF. The lighting was sweet, and the energy levels were awesome. Other than that, the last set of the night was pretty pathetic. I appreciate Jeff Mills for being one of the legends of techno, and one would think that he'd be quite the skillful deejay, but no. Beat matching is a word that doesn't exist in Jeff's dictionary. He was unable to beat match ANY track. It's not like he's a moldy old has-been who hasn't played for a decade. I was always under the impression that a deejay can never lose their skill. Perhaps he didn't have any to being with, lol. The transitions were horrid, and it didn't help that one of the speakers were mangled. Track selection was jibberishly put together. It was quite brutal

The ones on the local forums were even worse. People really didn't hold back.

i saw him twice , and both times were at Space Ibiza , and he rocked like crazy , especially last year !! he beat matched tracks within 2 seconds ... he is seriously mad !!! insane set , couldnt stop dancing !!!

Posted by nsamadi on Apr-01-2008 07:10:

I've never seen him play live, but I've listened to a few of his sets. I generally like his stuff, and I've always heard really good things about him. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but I've heard from an opening DJ, he can beat-match any track flat out in 9 seconds....he's really good with the ears.

I've seen him few months ago. His beat matching during the whole set was one of the worst ones I've ever heard. He had tons of mistakes.

Jeff Mills & Montpellier Philarmonic Orchestra - Eclipse ... the rest of Blue Potential i found terrible but this is a nice piece.

edited: never seen him live.

he was pretty spot on when i saw him at tresor last fall

i can't speak for what you saw/heard, but i see various members of UR, Francois K, Juan Atkins, Theo Parrish, Kevin Saunderson actually surprisingly regularly, and their mixing isn't exactly what you would call 'smooth', (though sometimes it is) but it's definitely not bad. Jeff Mills of all of them takes the most risk when mixing because of how he layers tracks. I rather like the fact that it all feels a little bit out of control, because, well, that's how a lot of mills-style detroit techno sounds anyways, and how the parties are anyways.

i think he looks at his deejaying as an experiment, and sometimes experiments blow up in your face.

Cyrus - Enforcement (Mills Mix) [Basic Channel]

i have to open for yahel in a couple of weeks and I think I am going to lead into his set with this track lol

Posted by RJT on Apr-01-2008 16:11:

I'm astounded at the number of people who say his mixing was "spot on" - I just don't believe it for even a minute.

Maybe they were just fun parties and you didn't notice how awful he was... ?

He's really, really bad. Really. Bad.

Just watch the slices documentary on Richie Hawtin or High Tech Soul and you will get how influential and revered the man is. His insane style may not suit all but he can beatmatch like a mthrfcker.

I'm not sure how you could call him mainstream. He's never really had any commercial hits.

I'm still looking to find some of his old stuff on CD.

You, of all people, should know better. FFS, you're from Detroit.

Or just too much time with Sketchy Steve before every Mills show you've been to?

Very easily found and goes for pretty cheap, too. Check Discogs or Amazon.

Well it's a very famous track in clubbing circles, but it's never made the Top 40 in the UK and I severely doubt it has in many other places either. You could call the creators of lots of classics (Phuture, Joey Beltram, Cybotron, Mr Fingers, etc.) "mainstream" because they have one widely-known track, even if they've never made any money and the vast majority of people wouldn't know anything by them.
