Songs that sound better pitched way up, or way down.

Listening to Fanciulli's Renaissance 2 disc I instantly fell in love with Technasia - Evergreen (John Tejada Mix), went to buy it and realized the original BPM is a fair bit quicker than it is on the Renaissance disc, and I think it's way, way too fast, even if it isn't pitched down all that high.

So this got me thinking - have any of you noticed tunes that behave similarly? Where you have to pitch the shit out of them one way or the other to make them sound the way you'd like because you just don't like the way it sounds at it's normal BPM?

I tend to pitch up a lot of old progressive house, because it often sounds a little too sluggish. It's probably because I'm acclimatised to prog starting at the 130 mark where back in the early 90s 130 was very fast for a lot of prog. Tracks that were designed to be energetic need speeding up a little to retain their energy.

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=399609 - similar thread

i'd like to add chab's 'tribute to bedrock' mix of kayama painters - wasteland. it's something like 127-8 originally but can work at almost 20bpm faster than that

as for slower, i'm going to say 95% of psy trance

Simon & Shaker - NaCo

how this could be 120bpm is rediiculase. Should be at 127 at least.

Well, immediately in my mind popped up two songs which I love being pitched up:

California Sunshine - Breaking Through
Etnica - Party Droid

Both on 155 BPM !

Santiago Nino - Believe (Max Graham Remix)

sounds way more awesome when pitched up 5 bpm or so.

I find a lot of goa (recent stuff especially) is far too high BPM.

Take Khetzal - Ganesha Pramana for instance and take it down from 180 to about 145bpm and you've got a savage track.

I never really found the BPM to be a factor for me - a tune is a tune no matter how it's pitched.

The only problem I've ever had has been trying to match the wildly varying BPM's together while mixing, but...

James Holden - Horizons (Original or Way Out West Remix)

Always thought it sounded better when pitched a tad bit faster.

oh, and Trentemoller - Physical Fraction needs to be pitched THE FUCK UP. Heard Sasha do this in a set of his, sooooooo massive.

Soul Designer - Little Angel Sounds much better pitched down.

Karma - Beach Towel (I:cube's cosmix marathon mix) Sounds much better slightly pitched up.

although i do still love the tracks the way they normally are i like the way "cass & slide - perception" and "amoeba assassin - piledriver (grayed out mix)" sound pitched up...

DJ Remy - Pumped Up

It is a crime to not pitch this track up.

Most goa sound sgreat when you fuck the BPMs

Lamat - Teletranceporter - down by 3 BPM
most from Fatali, add about 5 BPM

Doof - Destination BOM (originally 148 BPM) sounds WICKED at around 125. Seriously. Try it.

Astrix vs High Guy: Chaos (Pitch to around 160... GOOD GOD!!!!)

Exaile - Knock it Off (up to 150)

Infected Mushroom: I Wish (Brutal Remix by Skazi) (up to 160)

GMS: I Can Feel Da Music (up to 145)

I agree that it shouldnt really be a factor (within reason) especially for the dancefloor, but for a listening at home set, a subtle change in BPM can make you appreciate the track more.

Audion - Mund Zu Mund pitched way up for me. It sounds sooo slow and chilled out, but pitched up, it can come off as a dancefloor bomb....

Posted by nefardec on Apr-01-2008 22:56:

amba - shinkansen

Posted by THE_Chris on Apr-01-2008 23:10:

Another one -

Wizzy Noise vs Nikola Gala - Hush In Space Part 2

Original is about 130, pitch it to 140 or 145 for a massive Wizzy tune thats ignored by everyone

Nearly ALL flutlicht, Shokk, Dumonde, Marco V, proper techtrance stuff etc sounds brutally great from 144-148bpm

Mansun - wide open space (perfecto rmx) sounds wrong at 130 but it's hard to mix a 118bpm track into 'trance'

Rob Dougan - clubbed to death - hybrid remix has been used in a drum & bass set by me

babe instinct - disco babes from outta space (lange rmx) sounds way more fun at 160bpm, as does groovezone - eisbaer.

Every single hardstyle track out there needs to be pitched up.

Daft Punk's Voyager sounds like a killer Justice song at around 127 or so.

Posted by Neon Sky on Apr-02-2008 00:37:

Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl (Tim Davison mix) sounds pretty good pitched up

Holden and Thompson - Come to Me (Club Mix)

117BPM.

But on Nick Warren's Global Underground 30 it's pitched up to nearly 130.

I think it sounds better faster. And should really be about 125bpm anyways.

Posted by Darkarbiter on Apr-02-2008 09:24:

Electric universe-stardiver sounds awesome faster.

Also dude wtf... 180 to 145... that would sound shit. The melodies would be all slow and boring.
