Coffee, wine, cheese, beer and tea

There's a radio program I listen on my way to work called "Wine Time", in which a really smart guy tells us everything about wine - how to drink it, what goes (and what doesn't go) with each kind of wine, the best wine for each occasion, and so on.

Although I now know a bit more about wine, I still can't understand this whole "wine culture". I really don't see wine as anything other than fermented grape juice. "Maybe", I thought, "it's because I don't like wine".

However, last year I noticed that not only there's a wine culture, perpetuated by an army of oenologists, sommeliers and enthusiasts, there's also a coffee culture, a beer culture, a cheese culture and, more surprisingly, even a tea culture. And I humbly have to admit that I understand none of this, even though I like cheese and coffee.

My boss, for instance, loves tea, and seems to know everything there is to be known about tea. So far I've had green tea, yellow tea, white tea, black tea, Oolong tea, and she often tells us about how they're best served... but, they all taste like hot water to me

But, this is something I'd like to understand. Who here "gets it"? How did you get acquainted to these differences, and do they really matter to you? Do you really care? Can anyone here tell the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon?

CORe version: Lira doesn't know the difference between pepsi and coke

Well I mean chardonnay's a white and cabernet sauvignon's a red, but thats a pretty basic distinction

I'm quite well versed in the likes of coffee, pretty good with beer and teas, and learning with wine. I've always preferred good drink to good food. At the same time though I almost wish I didn't know the difference between good coffee and bad coffee, I can't go to dunkin donuts or any fast food places for coffee anymore, taste like fucking ass. But yeah, coffee can be as complex as any of the other drinks mentioned, and you've never had good coffee until you've had it paired perfectly with a good food.

Edit: also if you get to know them the differences between types are pretty damn big. I'd wager that you could tell the difference between a merlot and a zin if you had them back to back.

AAaand also, there are very few things in the world better than amazing green tea. Had a tasting once at a small green tea plantation in China, it burned the shit out of my tongue it was so hot but oh my god that might've been the closes I've come to orgasm while I had pants on, srsly

pepsi ftw.

and I can taste the differences.. but I could care less.. wine is wine.. its yummy, doesn't get me too wrecked anddd its prettier than beer.

.. and thats why I drink it.

you aren't drinking the right wine, try one of these

Posted by barbina on Apr-02-2008 19:05:

thats the point of me drinking it haha
liquor + me = ground/sleep

Posted by biznology on Apr-02-2008 19:08:

i would say that tea culture predates all of those other 'interests'.

beer being the most recent|

Thats quite all right, that's how its supposed to be anyway. natural order of things and all that.

And to stay on topic, its not that im that knowledgeable about wine but i can tell the difference between the good stuff and the yuck stuff, same about beer, coffee & cheese. just never got much into tea.

BTW Lira you should check out a show called Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure. Basically a guy that knows a lot about wine and a guy that knows that he likes to drink it and it gets him drunk...but that's about it go around France (and in second season USA) and try out different wines. Its quite interesting informative and silly.

I like wine and attended a wine testing event.
It is quite interesting to hear the different portions
that make a good wine + actually tasting it while it is being described.
I prefer red wine over white wine. Merlot to be exact.
White wine tends to give me a headache or a nasty hangover if taken in quantity.
Then there's the whole brekdown of regions of the world, fermentation, year it was made, etc...
that got to snobby for me..

My conclusion: Wine and cheese = WIN!

Posted by wizniz on Apr-02-2008 20:04:

there is a sub culture for EVERYTHING

computers
shoes
meat (specifically cooking techniques)
etc

it just has to do with your hobbies!

for instance, i'm all about music, but i'm sure any middle school girl wouldn't give a shit about the difference between a 128k MP3 and a .WAV

lmao I cant do drugs every time I go out!
or I'd look like this -->
instead of just this -->

I can tell the difference between different waters and when people say all waters taste the same I want to smack them upside the head.

In regards to these other cultures I can totally relate.
Going to too many vernissage parties I get the best and worse wines on the surface of the earth although the "best" as I put it is a gross overstatement.

Posted by ZeJayMan on Apr-02-2008 21:14:

i quite like wine. my favourite is from the Ribera Del Duero region of Spain. I also like some shiraz from australia, even if it's cheap.

Cheap wine tastes a lot better if you drink it at the right temperature.

Pesquera is my favourite. Get a few bottles at christmas or for birthdays.

I'm eating cheese right now, and it tastes ever so slightly of onion...because I used the same knife to chop onions as I did to cut the cheese.

I'm also drinking a tea.

Wewt.

LoL...cut the cheese.

i just started drinking tea and i like it. a friend gave me some jasmin tea that she picked up in london and i loved it. can't seem to find it anywhere around here though.

i'm not a beer snob. i'll drink just about any but i have preferences. sam adams and rolling rock are the usual. i'll drink fat tyre and blue moon but sometimes they can be hard to find out at a bar.

Posted by lcid on Apr-02-2008 22:01:

i'm only snobby about beer and cheese. go figure.

Posted by glass on Apr-02-2008 22:07:

too much beer, cheese and sausage can do that to a person...|
