Posted by DJ Newday on May-12-2002 23:40:

Jester what is best CD ripping soft ?!?!?!

I already use Audiocatalyst which uses Xing encoder engine I think it's a bit old now ?!?!?

By the way

Anybody knows what is the best <<>> & <<>> for getting best quality MP3s, from CDz.

Think this thread can help me and others to choose best softwares for ripping...

Check out www.r3mix.net

They suggest using Exact Audio Copy....

and they suggest a bunch of good encoders.

Also, beware the parts of that website that were written by a third party, not the guy in charge of the technical information. The Myths section comes to mind. These sections really are pretty sadly misinformed...

This site says that "Lame Encoder" is the best one around. A free encoder is the best??? Don't know ?!!!!

And "Exact Audio Copy" never heared of it. check it later.

*Snort*..... *coughs*

*Almost dies in laughter*

Yes, the Exact Audio Copy and LAME combination --both of which are free-- is the highest quality you can get...

Hey Gluegun! The headphone threads weren't enough to keep you busy eh?

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) for ripping the CD.

LAME for encoding to mp3.

RazorLame for the frontend to the LAME encoder (a windows program that uses the LAME encoder, so you don't have to put in the command lines yourself).

All of the release groups are using this combination, so you know it is the best. Plus you have mine and Gluegun's recommendations (both of us visit multimedia and sound related forums as well).

And, of course, the very latest version of Coolplayer to play it!

Here's a review with a link:

http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-...-3A024B24-prod2

And, Ideally, a nice professional or semi-professional sound card..

stuff by terratec, turtle beach (if you want gaming capability in your professional sound card, get the turtle beach santa cruz), m-audio, etc. etc. are good....

THIS is what's wrong with Winamp! Read this review:

CoolPlayer sucks.

it's Smaller & Faster than winamp and same quality but it's very uncomfortable, optionless & buggy.
defualt skin is pain in the... & other skin option is very hard to work. playlist is not handy and so on...

I haven't test eXact Copy & Lame yet, maybe tommorow and i will post the results.

Cool, we have new Icons on this forum.

I think i am sticking with winamp.

maybe i will go get that MAD plugin they are talking about. although, i doubt i will be able to tell much difference, my ears are pretty blown from too many rock concerts and loud headphones.

We *are* talking about the same coolplayer, right? The one that was released, like, 15 days ago? This thing is stable as a ROCK, had all the features *I* would ever use, has plenty of skin options... what bugs were you having, exactly??

And the sound quality is a LOT better than winamp... and, as always, the better your system is (including mp3 quality, sound card quality, speaker quality, and how well the actual .wav's were recorded), the more you will be able to tell that it is better...

Here is the only really major problem i have heard of with bugs. Seeing as how this is open source (and more people have begun to pay attention to this thing), it should get fixed quite soon. Hell, you could fix it if you want.

Folks with the Sound Blaster Live (and the Live only) appear to have a problem where the volume control moves the CD slider on their mixer instead of the master volume. Given that it's only Live! people having the problem, I'd say it was a bug in the live drivers. None of the other consumer cards, like the Santa Cruz, Audigy, Acoustic Edge and Game Theater XP have this problem.

Also, here are a bunch of skins!

where cna i get CoolPlayer from and EAC for free?

Posted by Ugg on May-13-2002 22:39:

Well.. Google is a good place to start, but since you're lazy...

Cool Player
http://sourceforge.net/project/show...?group_id=31900

MAD plug-in for Winamp
http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/

I'm still using Winamp b/c I don't have time to reprogram my remote control for Cool Player, but I am using the MAD plugin. There IS a quality difference between the MAD plugin and Winamp stock decoder! I can tell a difference even on the @#$% speakers I have at work.

Hey, when did we get the new smilies?

Posted by JohnSmith on May-13-2002 23:04:

hmm.. it doesn't sound any better to me..

in fact, it sounds a little worse..

my sound card is not the best..

i think all this audiophile stuff is nuts.

Which version did you get, the latest?

Is coolplayer set to 'Cooler Wave mapper'? Try right clicking on cool player, going to options, and selecting that under 'output'?

What are your speakers? What is your sound card?

What bitrate are your mp3's? What sort of mp3's are they? Do you have any high bitrate mp3's? What about high quality (exact audio copy ripped and lame encoded high bitrate) mp3's? Heck, I can easily tell the difference between Direct Sound output of coolplayer and Cooler Wave mapper and winamp...

Also, this is exact audio copy:

Posted by JohnSmith on May-13-2002 23:44:

no, i didn't download coolplayer.

i am happy with winamp. it doesn't drain my resources, i never use the minibrowser, and i like having visualization stuff sometimes..

but, i did download the mad mp3 plugin, as that was supposed to make winamp sound as good.

but, i can't tell a difference.

i listened to a few mp3s, some 128, a few 192, some vinyl rips.

sounds pretty much the same to me.

Posted by Gluegun on May-14-2002 01:04:

Did you read the readme? You have to move one of the .dll's out of the way (so winamp doesn't use it), put the right mad dll in it's place, and set mad's options...

Posted by JohnSmith on May-14-2002 01:11:

yep, i read the readme. it said you can just take the checkboxes off of MP1, MP2, and MP3 and that will disable it.

but, now i am trying to take the entire dll out.

i did it while a song was playing, so obviously it wasn't in use.
it still don't sound any different.

my ears are probably just shot.

my soundcard is a Creative AudioPCI

something like a soundblaster, but not as good i guess.

going straight into my optimus nova403 headphones, which i personally love.

Posted by Gluegun on May-14-2002 01:38:

Uh... your sound card and headphones are holding that back, big time...

If you like optimus headphones, try the Optimus Pro/45's at Radio Shack. Those are the same as the Koss SportaPro's, which are some of the best inexpensive headphones out there! They have incredible bass, and can be worn normally or like 'streetstyle' headphones. They are some of the best sports headphones on the planet, too...

Go pick some up, they have KILLER sound quality....

And your sound card is REALLY holding you back, friend...

Anything would be better. You can get a used Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, which is, imo, the best recording/dvd/music/gaming sound card (ie, the best jack of all trades), for $45 online... and $58 new. Try one of those, it will be worth it!

That, along with some free recording, studio, or dj software, and you would have a NICE beginning studio!!

Posted by JohnSmith on May-15-2002 01:42:

thanks gluegun, i trust you, i know the bottleneck is in my equipment, not the encoding schemes..

i think these one's sound SWEET already, and i hate the street style headphones. i need ones i can DJ with. i plugged these into a DJM600, and damn, they sounded good. better than sony or technics ones..

but, if i AM going to upgrade headphones, i think i will go for the sennheisers.

as for soundcard, it's what came in my computer.. sounds aiight to me.

i have heard a lot about this turtle beach santa cruz, i think i might have to pick one up.

that is still an internal card though right? how does it stack up against a soundblaster Extigy?
