anyone ever seen a psychiatrist?

Ive never seen one, and truthfully i dont think i do need to see one. I donbt have depression or am mentally unstable and I am not going through a huge crisis in my life, however I'm just mostly curious as to what its like and have a shit load i'd like to get off my chest. I come from an oldschool fam so their moto is just shut the fuck up and deal with it. and i know alot of ppl like to come on here and spill there problems too a bunch of strangers on the internet but i dont see that as being therapeutic.

so let me ask what actually goes behind those doors? do you just talk to some person and everything you say they keep overanalyzing it like you see in tv?

pills > therapy

Psychiatrists are overrated imo. Unless you have some medical condition that needs to be addressed, I think we can deal with most of our problems ourselves.

what do you mean seen? What do you think seen is? What would you do about see. Those naggers cant give me pills.

Darlin don't go if you don't actually need medical help with your mental state

Honestly, I know two people who thought they had minor shit to deal with, and after seeing a psychiatrist they felt out of control and worse. It's not that the medical professional himself is going to damage your psyche, but going to see one is an outward signal to your subconscious mind that there is something wrong with you... and although you might be fully in control of your mental state at the moment - you might start to believe that there IS in fact something wrong with you.

Dump it on a friend, it's what they're for
Or on someone you don't know so well - sometimes that's easier
if everyone else tells you to STFU you can call me

Sounds like you'd have more fun just taking stupid personality tests on the internet.

Posted by echosystm on Apr-09-2008 15:09:

i considered going to a psych. i'm a complete perfectionist and i had some obsessive-compulsive kind of habbits. instead, i decided to man up and deal with it myself.

problem solved!

i think if you have having severe depression, suicidal thoughts or other thoughts that really concern you, it is worth going to a psych. however, for everything else, i think it is best to avoid them. everyone has mental issues to deal with. i do not know a single person who is entirely mentally healthy, just as i do not know anyone who has god-like physical health. it's a fact of life. i think going to a psych breeds dependance, when most things in life really just take a bit of your own effort.

No you don't. I used to date a psychologist and being 'analyzed for fun' is anything but.

Besides, most people don't really want answers to some questions.

just see a hooker..its cheaper and they will do more for you than those hacks. Plus the aids will give you an excuse to go see a real doctor.

but the truth is what excatly is mentally healthy? i don't understand mental healt, whats considered the norm?

so like a psych would mentally rip me apart for what? to reassimilate me to be what she or he thinks is mentally normal?

Posted by bananas on Apr-09-2008 15:13:

Do you eat kittens?

Do you rape children?

Do you wear heels and lipstick in private?

Do you dream of suicide?

If you answered 'no' to these questions, you're okay in my book.

There is no standard for mental health. Unless you're obviously batshit crazay, you're probably fine.

Wow you really have no idea do you?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abnormal_psychology

quote:
Modern concepts of abnormality

Statistical abnormality - when a certain behaviour/characteristic is relevant to a low percentage of the population. However, this does not necessarily mean that such individuals are suffering from mental illness (for example, statistical abnormalities such as extreme wealth/attractiveness)

Psychometric abnormality - when a certain behaviour/characteristic differs from the population's normal dispersion e.g. having an IQ of 35 could be classified as abnormal, as the population average is 100. However, this does not specify a particular mental illness.
Deviant behaviour - this is not always a sign of mental illness, as it can occur without deviant behaviour, and such behaviour may occur in the absence of mental illness.

Combinations - including distress, dysfunction, distorted psychological processes, inappropriate responses in given situations and causing/risking harm to oneself. .

I've been to a couple psychiatrists before. Most of them will just prescribe you pills after anywhere from five to thirty minutes of conversation and complaints on your part; this is based on my own experience and that of a few friends.

Psychologists are a bit different; they tend to listen to you better and ask questions that might be helpful. Of course, they can't prescribe you anything since they don't (usually) have an MD, but sometimes they'll recommend that you see a psychiatrist who will prescribe it.

It sounds like what you're looking for is a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist.
