Customs
I already posted this in the chillout room, but nobody seems to be answering. I figured here would be a good place to post it, since DJs on a website probably know all about shipping stuff from all over the world.
if you have an answer to my questions, please reply in here:

Can anyone give me a clear explanation of how customs/duty/excise tax works from the US into canada?
I recently bought some records from the USA, i thought i got a pretty good deal, about $100 canadian for a 4xLP and 2xLP set.
but, when the records got to my house, i had to pay another $40.36 in customs charges, in addition to the shipping charges.
this SUCKS, but i paid it anyway.
what i want to know is, how did they come up with $40.36? just pick a number out of a hat? is it a percent, or some forumla?
now, i am thinking of buying something privately from a seller in the USA. The item is used, so i shouldn't have to pay tax on it. I want to avoid, or at least minimize my customs charges. I have heard that your package is exempt if it's a gift under $20.
how do they determine that? what i am buying is defintely worth more than that, but is it possible to fool these people? they don't know what a dj mixer is worth do they? will they open my packaged and check or what?
if anyone has experience with this sort of thing, i would appreciate hearing from you.

how the heck did your custom charges come to that much?
i only get charged for customs about half the time i order and everytime its only been 5.00 for handling and then GST/PST. thats it. hm......
thanks guys.. apparently saying reply in here TWICE wasn't enough?
i don't know how it was so much.. but it SUCKED.
yeah, I dont mind paying taxes..its the damn handling fee I hate!
yeah its the customs broker fee that will destroy you... i've learned my lesson. anything over $20 coming in from UPS, DHL, etc... they'll charge you the regular customs, plus a brokerage fee, which is like the price of the entire package itself. :/
thast why i like juno, they send it through the mail, u only have to pay gst/pst...
ah.. through the mail...
hmmmmmmmmm....
damn customs, i paid some monkey to pick up my records and move them from one counter to the other!
that explains....i never use those speedy delivery options. i don't need the records that fast so i just pick the regular mail option. saves me money and that crazy brokerage fee. hehe....with fees like that, it makes the stupid handling fee look like shit....
BUT I STILL HATE THE FUCKING HANDLING FEE!!!

what if i buy a turntable online from the USA ? am i gonna pay something for the customs ?
yes you will
100% sure ?
104% sure you will pay GST + a$5.00 handling fee
that is unless you get fast shipping, then you get ass raped like a catholic boy and his priest
very true. in the end, you're probably better off buying your tables from a local shop. i'm planning on getting them from calgary. atleast i can save the PST.
ps - in alberta they only have GST. is that right?
yes we only have GST here

not if you are having it shipped to calgary.
i have to first find an online shop from calgary
i live in mtl btw
just to let you know, I dont know of any online stores from Calgary. You can try www.axemusic.com long and mcquade(I dont know the URL) and I think Feroshus has a site now www.feroshus.ca or .com
try axemusic and long & mcquade. Buying from feroshus is too expensive. I think axemusic has the techs for about $724 each. Long and Mcquade has them for more, but you can ask them to beat axemusic's price.
