heading to Cancun, need some resort suggestions

I got awesome suggestions from some of you before I went to Cuba and we had a blastnow I need some Cancun suggestions!

where have you guys stayed before?

I'm heading down there for a week with a couple buddies of mine, and here is what we're looking for:

- resort preferably at center of Cancun, amid all the action!
- round-o-clock booze and food is vital! (most the resorts i've checked stop serving at 1-2am)
- it's gotta be alive and kickin', I want to stay away from the prentetious crowds. so...ideally, a resort that attracts young adults is where we want to be at.
- nothing over $1300
- and so long as basic necessities are met, I could care less about the hotel "star" rating.
- in short: a resort that caters to a young crowd(not friggin highschool students, but young adults...) pretty much a place where people go to have fun, non of this, i-wanna-relax-in-the-sun bs haha.

so, what say you?

ps. so far i've looked at:
Oasis Cancun
Oasis Palm Beach
Riu Cancun
Riu Caribe
Barcelo Costa Cancun

I went in December for the first time. It was a solo trip and I stayed at the Riu Cancun. It was really nice, very clean grounds and lobby is big. The best part is that its next to Bulldog, Coco Bongos and Daddy O's. You can easily walk there, but the resort provides bus service anyway at 11 when you go with the Animation crew. The animation crew were really jokes and were fun to go out with. They know all the best nights.

I didn't check out the The City but apparently they play some underground EDM and its supposed to be huge. I missed going there but check out the clubs listed above.

The negative part bout the Riu Cancun, is that it gets covered in shade after like 3 PM. The pool area and beach area get completely covered and the pool felt chilly. Only one was heated. I'm pretty sure now it's more hotter so it would be easier to deal with. I would recommend the Riu Cancun cuz the location and price is definately worth it AND you get access to Riu Caribe as well. I haven't visted the Riu Caribe but I wouldn't recommend staying there since it is far from the action, although i heard the beach area is wider. It is still a short bus ride away.

Here are some pics

At night, overlooking the main part of the hotel zone:

...I should add that the Riu is considered to be more than just providing your basic nessessities for a resort, so there maybe cheaper resorts in that same area. And also that I went to Cuba in February and I thought Cancun was much better overally although the beach in Varadero is 5x better.

I advice Riu cancun. One of the best hotels there and right in the club ditrict. Close to main hotspots: the city, nectar, daddy o etc

Nector is the best kept secret there!! Love that little club.

riu cancun easily. I've gone twice and its excellent for the price.

- you will NOT get a better location then this resort, its amazing
- good food (opposed to the very awful oasis cancun)
- all rooms are ocean view (just don't get stuck on the 13th floor because of the obstruction)
- beautiful resort grounds

only negative are beds a bit hard, but i didn't really care about that, and slept fine. also, when we went once in june and once in august, there was a good mix of a young crowd, but of course some families too, but thats expected unless you go to adults only.

the only hotels that are better in AI, are ones that cost WAAAY more, like the royal cancun, la blanc, and a couple others i forget the names of.

Any of the Oasis Playa resorts are fantastic.

I recommend calling Adnan Media for their club pass...

7 entries for 200...

Very worth the price...

If you intend to go out alot anyway...

I actually just got back from Cancun a month or so ago. I went to Oasis Cancun and it was fuckin sick. Honestly there's people up 24 hours a day partying.... no matter the time there are people partying everywhere. I remember the only days i made it for breakfast were the nights where i stayed up all night to go eat some breaky and pass the fuck out.... good times.

Cancun is fuckin sick and be sure to check out coco bongo before the weeks over, really quite the show .

I'd suggest Riu Caribe, if you want nightlife. Most resorts to the south are geared towards families and are quiet by 10:00pm.

The beach to the west of Riu Caribe (just past the giant Mexican flag, where the ferry to Isla Mujeres docks)is public and has some huge parties that run into the early morning.

If visiting ruins are something you want to do, Tulum is great and it has a great beach. Skip Chichen Itza, it's a 4hr bus ride into the rainforest and it is really HOT.

I always felt safe around the resort district, the city of Cancun is another story

Just take a taxi when you need, they aren't that expensive.

Make sure to hit Senior Frogs....but bring lots of money.

how far is Riu Cancun from Ria Caribe? more importantly, what are the major differences, if any?

also, in terms of attractions, aside from the clubs and the parties, what would you guys recommend? the ruins sounds great! Are there any worthwhile rainforests to check out? pretty much: what are the absolute MUST things we should do/see while we're in Cancun?

thanks guys

I've been twice to Riu Caribe(2007, 2008), and once to Riu Cancun (2007).

Riu Cancun has the upper hand on food (barely), but the beach is much much better at Riu Caribe.

Both of them are full of loud canadian people (i went there to take it easy not being asked 3204823 times if I wanted to learn how to learn the riu dance)

Riu Cancun, is more centrally located, close to the clubs, so cabbing and bus are useless.

If you don't care about the quality of the beach, hit Riu Cancun, if the beach is important then easily Riu Caribe.

edit: had no idea about the nightlife near Riu Caribe, never heard of it, because everything around there is ruins thanks to the storms in 2006.

Posted by evil_cookie on Apr-21-2008 02:01:

when you talk about the quality of the beach, should I be expecting a deserted beach? or are there still gonna be plenty of people on the beach? nearby beaches?

also, someone mentioned the passes that adnan media offers - I did a quick read @ http://www.adnanmedia.com/index-3.html but has anyone purchased this pass before? Props/cons?

merci

Ya know, after thinking about it... If you really are going for nightlife and not doing the "beach thing", I'd go for the Riu Cancun, but it is REALLY noisy (but that's just me...I DO like to sleep sometimes) and I think it costs more than Caribe

Malek is right, the area around Riu Caribe is pretty smashed up, so there isn't the crowds...but if crowds are what you're after..
I really like the beach at Caribe, not much fighting over beach chairs

There is no such thing as a "deserted beach" in Cancun. If a deserted beach (**beach sex**) is what you're looking for I'd recommend Tancah, south of Xel-Ha...good times, good times

...I'd rent a car for that, though.

Are you flying Westjet?

not sure yet, i'm going through escapes.ca, we should be buying our tickets this week, seeing as Riu Cancun it is!

on on related note, how expensive is cancun compared to like...varadero?

I couldn't tell ya, being an American, our government won't let us go to Cuba, a damn shame really

...But I can tell you that Cancun has really changed (1991-2007), and they have a price structure that is close to New York City, ie: a $500.00USD dinner at Kululcan Plaza, and $30.00USD door for Basic Discoteque.
I used to go and have a "cheap" vacation, not any more.

serious eh, that's exactly what we were looking for, a "cheap" vacation. I was in the states over xmas and i'm heading to norway after mexico, so I really don't intend on spending a lot of money down there.

would you recommend the pre-paid club-pass? how expensive is a regular night out...generally speaking?

HELL YES!! I was pissing money on door/cover charges, and I never like to stay in one spot all night. I'd get the pass, if you are going out. I spent $40-$150 on most nights clubbing (I usually didn't drink that much, danced, and chatted)

I know that I spent lots on food, but if you're careful, and not eat out all the time (like I did), you can still do it "cheap". I think all restaurants have to post their menu outside, so you can check prices.I'd rent a car and go to the city of Cancun and groceries, if you are not going to do an "all-inclusive" at the resort.
