Love Imitating the Bonzai sound; multiple basses

If you guys have noticed, Bonzai records (e.g. M.I.K.E., Yves DeRuyter) typically have a really strong bass. And that's not just because of the main bassline. They also have a "velvety" (maybe wrong word?) bass-synth that acts like the second bassline.

It goes like this, usually: _-_-_-

It's heard in Yves DeRuyter - Music NonStop (Original), Push - Strange World, to name a few.

Do you know what I'm talking about, and how to reproduce this kick-ass effect?

...that would be nice to know

I would call it more the M.I.K.E. sound. All his tracks have awesome bassline synths. I have been trying to achieve a same effect. Also M.I.K.E. is usually involved with Yves' tracks.

I would really like to know how to achieve this effect too. Although the best I have is just fooling around with the notes like you have indicated in your message and then add delays. After alot of fine tuning it can happen. I also found that increasing the attack a bit helps too. Its all about delays! =]

Thanks for the info.
By the way, what's an attack?

Posted by Superscope on May-16-2002 02:21:

Hey eugene m8 not spoke to u in a bit!

Attack-Length of time it takes for a note to reach its peak velocity
Sustain-Length of time the peak is held for
Falloff-Length of time the note takes to get from peak velocity to silence

you mean this. ADSR= Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release are envelope generators

Attack- determines how much time
it will take for an audio signal level to go from zero to maximum level when a
key is struck

For the envelope that is controlling the filter, the Attack
controls how long it will take the filter to open to it's maximum brightness

Decay- how long it will take for the envelope
to fall to it's sustain level and determines how far to close the cut off frequency in the filter before it falls to it's sustain level

Sustain-the envelope
controls how much signal can pass through when the note is being held

Release- The Release stage of the envelope starts when the gate signal to the
envelope generator ceases. The amplifier's output is dropped down to zero at the rate
determined by the Release parameter and when the filter returns to it's original
cut off frequency

there are other envelope generators such as DADSR (Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release)
and ADS (Attack, Decay, & Sustain)

that figure isn't correct.....sustain should be the vertical line after decay...the way that graph goes, you can't do that with an ADSR

That pic Peter Campbell posted is fine, it shows sustain and release as it would in a adsr. The sustain is long to illustrate the effect of holding down a note and release after releasing the note.

Posted by Pjotr G on May-16-2002 09:38:

there is a change in slope in between "decay" and "sustain" ...that's not possible! sustain is vertical on the graph not horiozontal as it is plotted there.

If the line above the "sustain" was flat, that would have simulated the effect of holding down the key after the sustain value had been reached.

Are you saying that the sustain should be level in amplitude? Which i agree is right, cos the horizontal shows time to its will be sustained if flat. But im sure you you can still get the sustain to fade even before the key is released *thinks back to synth*

Posted by Pjotr G on May-16-2002 09:59:

yes you can, that's what the decay is for....if you set a low sustain and a long decay the sound will die out as you hold the key....that's why that pic is wrong....decay and sustain belong together
