Do you dissect tracks?

Do you actually dissect breakdown /buildup / energy / treble / bass / background/ vocals in the tracks you listen to. Also do you trackspot or are you like me and dont know 98% of the tracks names / producers of what I like. Discuss

im seeing tracks as a whole... if its good or if its bad... i didnt quite get the question here tho...

Posted by lcid on Apr-25-2008 20:08:

only when i'm high.

I dissect them a bit, but it used to be far worse when I tried to produce and mix. "Worse" because it got to the point where I analysed more the music than enjoyed it.

It's one of the downsides of creating music, IMO. When you have no clue and it just sounds like one huge blur of sound, it makes for a more natural listening experience.

When we go to clubs, we don't dance, we analyze.

lol

I pull them apart with my hands and then eat it one by one.

When I started developing a musical ear I couldn't help but pick out certain chord changes, melodic ideas and stuff like that. These days I try to leave that aside unless I'm trying to do something other than just enjoy the music.

Posted by AnomalyConcept on Apr-26-2008 04:11:

If a track has lyrics, I'll try to pay attention to the lyrics at least once, usually 3rd or 4th time through. I try not to dissect tracks, but as a DJ, I'm prone to listening to the tracks and figuring out how the elements work.

As far as musical changes, I never really bothered to learn music theory (even though I played an instrument for over 15 years), which is a shame, and subsequently can't compose/produce worth anything.

I try to just listen to the music without nitpicking, but if a section or melody catches my ear, I'll perk up and listen intently.

yes, every single piece of music. Disect/Listen 60/40. Bad habit...but helps with what im trying to do.

Can confirm.

99% of the time I can't help it too, but sometimes that magical thing when you are emotionally involved enough in the track makes me forget I'm dissecting the track.

Posted by Barachem on Apr-27-2008 15:14:

Sometimes it automatically happens when i listen to some simple and boring track.
And i do it if i want to understand a track.

Posted by GoSpeedGo! on Apr-27-2008 15:24:

Ever since I started producing/djing.

definitely... especially as a composer. i also visualize the song (see images, colors).

Posted by Elec on Apr-28-2008 02:23:

Yes, especially ever since I started playing around with production. When I listen to music I like to sort of visualize a color coded 3D image of the sound in my head

Wow, this is so spot on. I also had this when I was still producing.
