also, how does it stack up against Doom3?

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-29-2008 10:02:

does it have strategic zoom?

When they bring out a GTA that combines a proper FPS engine (i.e Unreal 2 etc), and with a proper driving/physics engine ala Gran Turismo etc, the game will be good.

Until then, it's fucking shit.

GTA 2 is the best of the series for me so far.

It really is good...too bad im too tired to play anymore today.

yeah, i couldnt believe it when i couldnt use my steering wheel for a game supposedly about theft of autos

that's why i liked the original driver WAY more than GTA 3. it was all about the driving, and the physics in that game were difficult enough to be challenging but not so realistic to be frustrating.

If it was really good you'd be up smoking crack, drinking red bull and listening to gabba while you played.

While it might not live up to your dream, GTA IV is simply amazing on numerous levels (for a console game).

Posted by r5a on Apr-29-2008 15:30:

i went with a friend to the midnight madness shit.
he got it and we tested it out last night (just woke up)
it seems really legit. a lot of improvements, the voice acting is a lot better. storyline seems good and you definitely wont run out of shit to do. graphics are a tad below what I was expecting from the trailers (clearly everything they showed us before was rendered and touched up) but they are still pretty good, nothing too majority advanced over the previous ones.

After seeing someone streaming their playing of the game online, I've really considered buying an xbox and GTA rather than a midi controller I've been saving for. It's that damn good.

Go PS3...better graphics and a blue ray player. Though if online capability is what u want, 360. The PS3 game lineup is finally getting better.

Posted by RJT on Apr-29-2008 15:42:

Counting the hours until I can go track down my copy.

Sam, here's the breakdown for using GTA4 as a console purchasing choice:

If you want a Blu-Ray player, slightly better graphics, and next to no load times, then buy a PS3.

If you want the opportunity to have downloadable content for GTA4 in the future (which R* is claiming will be the size of the entire game of San Andreas - whatever that means), and competitive, achievement based online play, go with a 360.

I don't think you can go wrong either way - just different strokes to move the world, you know?

Posted by RJT on Apr-29-2008 15:47:

Also, this (take it with a grain of salt until you've played):

quote:

Earlier today we broke the news that some Grand Theft Auto IV gamers were having problems with the game on both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

For them, the game was freezing up during the introductory cut-scene, something that neither I nor Mike experienced during our time with the game on both systems.

Rockstar declined to comment on the issue officially, so I went to the phone and called up Rockstar Support to see what they had to say about the problem.

A very friendly, and obviously unhappy, fellow answered the phone who, after thanking me for not yelling at him and apologizing profusely for the problem, spilled quite a bit of beans on the issue:

The man told me that the problem is apparently only effecting the 60 GB version of the Playstation 3, but that it didn't matter than my particular console was a launch console (Yes, I told a little white lie and said my copy was locking up.) He said the problem is not across the board for the 60GB PS3s but rather only impacts some, so their tech folks are working around the clock to try and figure out what is causing the issue.

He did ask me to make sure that my harddrive wasn't full and that I had the latest firmware update, but confessed that that really isn't what's causing most of the problem. He also said that the Xbox 360 is having the "exact same problem," which has further stumped their tech folks.

I asked him if wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the PS3 version would help, as seen on the PS forums, he said I could try but that he hadn't heard of it helping a single person.

He ended the call by saying that they really have no idea when a fix will be coming because they can't figure out what is exactly causing the problem and then once more apologized.

"I feel terrible about this."

If only more support folks were as empathetic and genuinely concerned about the problems their customers are going through.

Happening with a lot of high profile releases right now - but as is mentioned above, no idea how widespread a problem it is for now, so we'll see.

PS3 version also has online, and you don't have to pay $50 per year for P2P gaming either.

Posted by infinity HiGH on Apr-29-2008 15:52:

I thought PS3 load times were atrocious. Or is this just for GTA4?

Posted by iammesol on Apr-29-2008 15:52:

I can't afford a PS3, and have never wanted one.

It doesn't have downloadable content and if you think Home is going to be free forever you're dreaming.

Games that have large hard drive installs don't suffer from the load time issues.

What does Home have to do with this?

(And Home will be free, although certain content in Home might not be)

How can u be so sure? You can't start charging for a service that was free initially, or it will fail for sure. Obviously they can charge for certain items and such, but thats it.

50 dollars a year holy shit. How the fuck does one pay 50 dollars a year. Seriously, if you can't afford 50 dollars a year you shouldn't be playing video games.

I got GTAIV..... on my lunch break

It's sitting in my car waiting to be played

Sure you can, just because it's not in monthly fees doesn't mean there won't be charges - Sony's online service is barely running right now, there's little content to it, so of course there isn't going to be a charge. Once Home and the new PSN arrive (which was supposed to be last week, and is now open ended), expect drastic changes in how Sony's online service changes.

I just don't believe Sony's service, once fully up and running, will be all together that different from Microsoft's.

GTA 2 is the best of the series for me so far.

The series was never about making precision sniper shots and having the perfect lap time around the city...maybe if you manage to not be such a tight ass, you could appreciate being a gangster in GTA.
