The main question reverberating from the small Austrian town: How could a man keep his daughter locked in his basement for 24 years, where she gave birth to seven of his children while her mother and three of those children lived upstairs without an inkling of the horrors in the cellar? Fritzl explained Elisabeth's disappearance by saying she had run away from home, a story backed up by letters he forced Elisabeth to write, including one that begged her parents not to look for her. Other letters made it seem the missing daughter had left the three children on the parents' doorstep -- when in fact they had been born in captivity in the family's basement. Elisabeth told police that she and her three children Kerstin, 19; Stefan, 18; and Felix, 5, did not see the light of day during their entire time in captivity underneath the building in Amstetten, a rural town about 150 km (93 miles) west of Vienna. She went missing in 1984, when she was 18 years old, police have said. More details also emerged at the news conference about the basement dungeon in which the daughter and her children were kept -- and how her father managed to keep them captive for more than two decades. See inside the cellar prison � The authorities have revealed that the prison, constructed in the basement of the 1960s building, ran underneath both the building itself and the garden outside. The entrance was via a small door, hidden behind cupboards in the basement, controlled by an electronic keyless-entry system. Polzer said that the prison was hard to find, even if someone was looking for it, and had been soundproofed. "Even though they shouted and called they were not in a position to let anyone hear them," Polzer told the press conference. Polzer said that Fritzl made clear to his wife and other children that the area was out of bounds and they were not to go into the basement. He bought food and took it to his captives in the evening. Watch a report on details of the case � Detectives made the grim discovery about the cellar earlier this month after Kerstin was hospitalized in Amstetten after falling unconscious and taken to a hospital in Amstetten by her grandfather with a SOS note from her mother hidden on her. A DNA test was later carried out which revealed her grandfather, Josef Fritzl, was also her father, according to ORF, Austria's state-run news agency. That sparked a police investigation, which revealed that Fritzl fathered at least six children with his daughter, forcing her and three of the surviving children to live in the cellar of his house, according to ORF's Peter Schmitzberger. Watch police describe the captives' jail � On Sunday, police searched the hidden rooms where Fritzl admitted he kept his daughter and their children, including sleeping quarters, a kitchen and a bathroom, which Fritzl told police he built, Polzer said. Amstetten police say they were put on Fritzl's trail following an anonymous tip off. They apprehended the pair on Saturday near the hospital and once police assured the daughter that she would never have contact with her father again, "she was able to tell the whole story," Schmitzberger said. Elisabeth said her father began sexually abusing her at age 11. On August 8, 1984 -- weeks before she was reported missing -- her father enticed her into the basement, where he drugged her, put her in handcuffs and locked her in a room, she told police. For the next 24 years, she was constantly raped by her father, resulting in the six surviving children, she said, according to the police statement. She also told police she gave birth to twins in 1996, but one of the babies died a few days later as a result of neglect, and Fritzl removed the infant's body and burned it in an oven. She told police that only her father supplied her and her children with food and clothing, and that she did not think his wife knew anything about their situation Fritzl lived upstairs with his wife, Rosemarie, who police said had no idea about her husband's other family living in the cellar. The couple adopted three of the children that Fritzl had with his daughter, according to police. He told his wife that his missing daughter had dropped the unwanted children off at the house because she could not take care of them, police said. When Kerstin fell ill, Fritzl apparently told his wife and the hospital that his "missing" daughter had dropped off the sick girl on his doorstep. In an effort to find out about Kerstin's condition, the hospital and police asked the media to put out a bulletin requesting any information about the girl or her missing mother, attorney general Gerhard Sedlacek told NTV. Sometime later, Fritzl brought Elisabeth out of the cellar, telling his wife that she had returned home with her two children after a 24-year absence, police said. Asked if the police were investigating his trips abroad, Colonel Polzer said: �His holidays are none of our concern.� He added that there was enough space to store enough food in the dungeon for the captive family to survive in their father�s absence. Previous convictions Even though Mr Fritzl�s former employers and neighbours � as well as newspaper investigations � revealed that he had previous convictions for sex offences and arson in the 1970s and the 1980s, the authorities claimed that it would probably be impossible to recover the original criminal records because such documents were not kept in Austria after a certain time. A local newspaper published a picture of Mr Fritzl taken at a court hearing in 1982, when he allegedly faced an arson charge. Asked why social services had allowed Mr Fritzl to adopt the three children despite his alleged criminal record � and with no evidence that he was, in fact, their grandfather � Hans-Heinz Lenze, the Amstetten Mayor, told the press conference that in 1994, when the first child was adopted, neither Mr Fritzl nor his wife apparently had any conviction. �In such cases, giving a the child to members of the family is always preferred to committing it to a foster home,� Mr Lenze said, claiming that social services had not broken with the standard procedures. "Colonel Polzer" as he likes to be called is too interested in shooing the media away from the campsite.. he emphasises that the investigation would continue for months again and again.. so that media guys looses interest in this and stop asking questions (which btw Austrians never did). All further questioning of Mr Fritzl has been delayed until next week for no reason. Many basic elements of the investigation have not even been started. Rosemarie, his wife, has yet to be questioned. Police asked her whether she knew what was going on, she said 'no' and that is it.. they found her denial credible. Conduct and handling of the case is miserable. Who tipped off the police if not an accomplice???!! Police says �Knowing about a crime is not the same as being an accomplice,� Oh IS IT??? Tipper is fucking rapist. �The rapist asked anonymity and we will respect that.� The police seem determined to rule out any possibility of someone being in league.
The door to the dungeon - which had received building permission as a nuclear fallout shelter - weighed 300kg (660lb) and could only have been hinged into position with the help of someone else. Mr Fritzl, went on several holidays, including at least one three-week stay in Thailand, leaving Elisabeth and her children in the cellar. Even if the small pantry was full of cans it is unlikely that there would have been enough food to feed them. And there are still questions about how the imprisoned relatives disposed of their rubbish. Police blocked questions on the issue and seemed even to deny knowledge of Mr Fritzl's holidays and absences. They say �If there is a home video from this Thailand trip then we would like the media to give it to us and we will then think about it.� The video, shown widely on television for past one week and they have not seen it and pretend to know nothing about it, yet again Austrians love to not care, to not know, to not ask, to not bother at all.

One, Sabine Kirschbichler, lived for two years in the house and told the magazine that she frequently saw Mr Fritzl carrying heavy bags of shopping into the cellar after dark..
Two, Mr Fritzl's sister-in-law has revealed that the engineer often spent the whole night in the dungeon under the house. She said that he made daily visits to his cellar on the pretext that he had work to do and would tell other family members, not to disturb him. I mean common dont disturb him for freaking 24 YEARS??!! Ok you visit once a month.. dont disturb than.. than its okay.. but when you freaking visit the place DAILY FOR TWENTY FOUR YEARS and asks not to be disturbed dosent it get a tiny suspicious????!!!!
Three, Alfred Dubanovsky a lodger at the Austrian house says he saw another man go to the cellar where the abuse happened. He told the BBC the man was introduced as a plumber to him by fritz. Who was this plumber who visited the place when she was in? This Mr Dubanovsky assumed the basement was being used as a storeroom because a neighbour said to him Mr Fritzl often took food down to the cellar, which is four, the neighbour.
Five, he began to expand the underground dungeon from initially one room to three when she became pregnant, yet again NOONE noticed ANYTHING! Only in AUSTRIA!!
Six, fire inspectors routinely checked a heating boiler in the cellar in 1999. Nothing noticed!
Police and local Austrians have prolonged the agony of Elisabeth Fritzl, for almost a quarter of a century.
�Elisabeth ran away from that house as a girl, police searched for her, brought her back and delivered her back into the violent embrace of her father,� says Hedwig Woelfl, the director of a child protection centre in Austria. �Running away from home was a clear sign of unhappiness ... but nobody apparently showed any interest in the fate of this girl.� The chief executive of the region, Hans Heinz Lenze, showed reporters documents proving that his council's go-ahead for the adoption of three of Ms Fritzl's children was legal: no trace of a sex crime could be found. Social welfare teams visited the house 21 times, but never looked around. Yet the building had in the space of a decade registered one missing person and made the claim that three babies had been dumped on the doorstep. Yes one MISING for 24 years and yet babies popped up at doors and noone asked anything? Oh Asmetten!! What kindda place are you?
