If it weren't for RIM, I swear I think we'd be lagging behind some countries that don't even have food when it comes to stuff like this. I mean how many times does it take for the CRTC and public to finally realize that we lack sufficient competition within this market?

However, it's still unclear whether a deal has actually been reached because neither side is talking. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment. While Rogers initially said it planned to offer the iPhone in Canada, the carrier was later forced to backtrack after it admitted it didn't actually have a deal with the Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of iPods and computers. It has been widely speculated that the stumbling block was Rogers' wireless data plans, which typically cost more than those offered by carriers in Europe and the United States � a disparity that critics blame on a lack of Canadian wireless competition. As well, most of Rogers' wireless data plans have usage caps, with users charged by the megabyte if they go over their allotment. "We're not fans of unlimited plans," Rob Bruce, president of Rogers' wireless division, told analysts during a February conference call. Apple, by contrast, emphasizes the consumer experience of its products and is said to be adamant that the iPhone be offered with unlimited data plans. That way, subscribers don't have to worry their mobile Web browsing habits will put a crater in their wallets. In return, carriers offering the iPhone can expect to woo new customers and coax more of their customer base onto higher-priced wireless data plans. AT&T Inc., which has an exclusive deal with Apple in the U.S., this week reported a 57 per cent year-over-year increase in its wireless data revenues, which was attributed in part to the iPhone and its focus on mobile email and Web browsing. Apple also demands a portion of subscribers' monthly bills. That's bound to be a sticking point with Rogers, which has little incentive to bow to all of Apple's demands since there's little risk the iPhone will wind up in a competitor's hands.

they're unlocked versions that are running on the Rogers/Fido GSM network here. similar use has been made in many other countries that have yet to supply the phone in agreements with Apple.

Yep, Australia is rumoured to be getting the 3G version first. Would be nice if we did the same thing, but likely Rogers will fuck that up for us.

ive fiddled with the iphone and im not impressed. its more of a toy than a phone. im happy with my blackberry curve.

I wonder if it will go to Rogers, Fido, or both.

I'd like one, but no way am I paying significant data fees. I'd likely just use it as a phone plus browsing at free Wi-Fi hotspots.

Obviously each to their own but the general care and innovation in the phone is gobsmacking and I haven't been gobsmacked for a long time

I hear you....with me I need something thats more practical and okay if it drops couple times and still works fine,camera is big thing for me (5+ mega pixels for sure).

I have blackberry pearl which is currently activated on a corp voice and data plan with free everything since I work with Bell but yet I still pay almost $90/month to fido for city fido plan for the phone I love.
