Mix on a CD question
Hi
Is there someway of writing a CD of a recorded mix, and breaking the mix into tracks, without using a wave editor?
I pretty much want it to happen instantaniously....
Most audio CD writers have got a trackmark button, so you record onto the CD live and hit the button when you want to stick a track mark in... is that instantaneous enough?

I'm talking about buying a separate CD writer to record straight onto a CD while you do your mix, not recording onto your PC
It does have a few down sides though, like you have to get it right first time or you waste a CD.
Edit: Although having re-read your post it sounds like you've already got the mix on your PC and you just want to trackmark it. I'm pretty certain Nero can put track marks into an mp3 file when you burn it.
Just use a cue sheet.
Easiest way by far.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_sheet
there's actually a very good thread about cue files in the FAQ forum where i learned how to use cue files
cue files are the way to go
He did say he doesn't want to have to do a cue sheet...
Good gawd is it really that hard to take your wave file, insert markers where u want to track at, turn the markers to regions, then extract the regions?
Nero..
If you're on a pc. Make a music cd.
Now import your large mp3 file. Obviously it'll have to be under 80 minutes.
(i'm writing the following off the top of my head as i'm on a mac now)
Right click on the file and click properties.
There should be a tab that says indexes and limits or something along those lines. Click that.
Now your audio file should slowly start loading in the window. You'll have a start and end marker. Don't worry about the file loading, you don't actually have to wait for it to load.
All you do is click where ever you want to make a track mark and click split.
When i load a file, lets say an ARMIN set (best dj in the world by the way) i'll usually just roughly click on 5 min increments and click split. If you want to do it more precisely or know where you want to split it already then you just search for that spot.
Let's say you've put in 6 new tracks marks. Click ok, it asks you if you want to apply the splits, click ok.
And you'll be looking at the main screen again with multiple tracks.
Now important part, highlight every track bar the first track and right click. Set the gap between audio to 0.
The reason you don't select the first track as well is because it needs a 2 secs gap before it. If you happen to highlight all of them, Nero will just tell you it has to put a 2 second gap in front of the 1st song.
Anyway, click burn. Fingers crossed it'll work. It should.
Of course i found out a way to do this with Toast & Jam on the mac, until i came to burn the cd when my Macbook pro told me the Optical drive didn't support split marking. Assholes.
Probably wasn't explained the best but as i said it's off the top of my head.
This is burnt as an audio cd, not an mp3 cd.
Handy when you just want to split something up so you can roughly search for it in your car or wherever you might be listening to it. PITA when you have to seek on an mp3 in a car as we all know
nelly
Thanks for that...
Didn't know Nero could do it, guess I need to tinker around with it more.
I swear someone needs to invent a proggy that can tell bass changes (track transitions) and automatically make the split.
And Stu Cox, how much do CD writers go for? Those are able to produce/copy CD's much faster then PC burners I presume?
nice breakdown n3lly, everything but the AVB comment
Good advice everyone but this really all seems the long way round...
If you're on a PC, you'll need something to record the set in to in the first place....like a wave editor. Why don't you want to use a wave editor by the way?
Use wavelab to record the set, drop markers on the fly when you want and when you're done, change(edit) those markers (by right clicking them) to give them a name and make them region splits (or track markers - I forget the exact term).
Then go to the preferences and make the burning preferences (yes, you can do this entire process in wavelab) have zero pause between tracks and burn the CD. As long as your CD drive supports CD text (only very old/crap drives won't) the CD text data will be burnt too. I think the track names in a list form can even be exported as a cue sheet.
Then go in to the label and sleeve editor (yes, still all in wavelab) and make yourself a nice design to print on your new CD.
No need to mess around with nero/other programs, because wavelab does it all. And no I don't work for them, they just got it right.
