Cygnus X - Turn around

Classic tune with lots of driving beats.

One of my favorites from Cygnus-X's "Hypermmetrical" album,actually, one of my favorite trance tunes in general. Trance of the PUREST form indeed. It builds and builds around the fast hypnotic rhythm, adding layers of arpeggios and ecstatic short melodies in the process, exploding into some sort of mystical experience.I don't know of any other version than the album version (or the "Kinderlied" version which i think is identical to the album one). There are basically just 3 versions of Turn Around

Original produced by Ralf Hildenbeutel (the finest producer on Eye Q, studio producer of Sven V�th), which was featured on Hypermetrical and in this YT video. Typical Cygnus X track, sounds very similar to Superstring and The Orange Theme but that ably executed beautiful main melody makes it even more stellar compared to these two classics.

A.C.B. Edit, which is just Matthias Hoffmann's (Cygnus X) take on original. Sounds almost exactly like original, but kinda plastic and forced compared to it. The highlight of the original - the main melody - sounds not so good here.

Tony De Vit Trade Mix, hard house mix which is not bad, but not that good either. Sounds like A.C.B. Edit, but less atmospheric and trancey with that typical TDV hard pounding housey beats.


If you liked it (of course you did) check out the whole Hypermetrical album, and especially the track Hypermetrical, which has one of the most memorable intros ever (even that guy who judges the track by the first 15 seconds would like it) and Indakasa, ambient breakbeat beauty with haunting warm pads and nice percussion.

I always had the impression that Cygnus-X was only Matthias Hoffmann, but yeah he was with the other trance genius Hildenbeutel. In any case, Matthias Hoffmann together with Sven Vath and some other guy owned the great Eye-Q label.


Back to topic, the whole "Hypermetrical" album is great. "Kinderlied part-2" is a fast, goatic spaced-out journey, with ascending and descending filtered riffs and cold spacey pads. As Sljiva noted,"Hypermetrical" has a very nice intro, before releasing a fast and driving riffy journey, which then leads to a break with ethnic chants and the introduction of another higher-pitched riff (that somehow brings to mind the riff of Underworld's "Dark Train"). But if "Hypermetrical" has a nice intro, wait to listen to the intro of the next track, "Deliberation". Lush synth pads together with some gentle angelic choir mark the onset of this 12-minute (!) trance-journey. As the tune develops,a typical clubby riff, together with an intense acid-line are played side by side to an ever-rising monotonous angelic pad choir, which slowly creates a long break that resembles the beautifull intro, before leading to more crazy acid lines and spaced-out samples. Next track is "Turn Around" which is an amazing building trance track (no comments for obvious reasons), before giving -way to the next track "Synchronism". In relation to "Kinderlied part 2" this has also an old-school goa flavour, but here is even more spaced-out and cosmic! In this 10-minute trance journey, the hypnotic layers of oscillating synths lead to the introduction of another resonating "cosmic-sounding" synth in the middle, which falls and rises-almost like talking in some alien tongue. The samples of chanting children introduced in the short break, together with the typical spacey synth, the cosmic synth which rises even higher and the introduction of all layers of arpeggios in full-effect, ensures a ride on the cosmic serpent without the need to go to the Amazon and drink Ayahuasca. Next track is an 8-minute version of "The Orange Theme" with the characteristic anthemic melody. This "old-school" album version is even more hypnotic and pulsating. When the melody strikes back after a second break, pulsating noisy samples and driving drums can lead to altered states of cosnciousness. After this long trance journey, "Indakasa"-the last track- comes as the final state of ecstacy, that is, the discovery of heaven. Definitely one very special ambient/downtempo track. Sweet synths, samples of female angelic voices and slowly developing beautiful trancey riffs can fill your room ( or your club) with impressions of utopia. Definitely recommend the album!


Matthias Hoffmann and Ralf Hildenbeutel had also another famous side-project (together with Sven Vath ) the "Odyssee Of Noises"

And of course, Matthias Hoffmann's solo work as "Brainchild" is sublime (now i hope that this "15-second guy" doesn't come here saying that "sublime" and "minimal" are shit.)


Brainchild- "Symmetry- C" (This is a bloody massive classic trance tune. Symmetry-P is even better IMO. unfortunately i can't find "P", but "C" is still awesome!)
