Be Cool! Independent Phone or Internet Providers GTA

Any notable independent home phone or internet providers in the gta?

A VoIP service would be good as well!

Thanks!

Independent? Hah! All the lines are owned by either Bell or Rogers. Choose wisely, lol.

Yup Cosmic Fur is right about either Bell or Rogers.

Go with Acanac (www.acanac.com I think) It's like $19 a month taxes included, no contract and up to 5 mbps and UNLIMITED bandwidth. They are under Bell.

Might want to reread their site

It is only $19/month if you pay for a year in advance. After the first year, it goes up to $40/month.

I have both VOIP and DSL from Acanac, and they work pretty well. The DSL is truly unlimited, and the speeds are pretty good. The Voip is ok, but it seems the quality is really traffic dependent. I turn off most of my p2p stuff when making calls.

Companies like Acanac stay afloat by getting your money up front; I am guessing they have some good investors.

So...if you pay for the year up front, it would cost you $29/month (taxes in) with Acanac for both Voip and DSL.

Add in your Bell band-fee of $8 to $14 depending on where you live.

Acanac actually looses money on you for the first year. Every DSL reseller (Acanac included) has to pay $20/customer to bell. So if you subscribe by them, you are paying them $19/month, and they are paying bell $20/month.

For the Voip it is only $10/month if you have your own ATA (Voip modem). If you rent their's, it is another $10, so $20month. I went out and bought my own for $70, so after 7 months of the $10/month service, you actually start saving money by not renting their's.

Also, if you are going to have dry(or naked) DSL, it will cost you an extra 8/month. So that brings the cost to $27 or $47 per month.

So in the end the DSL price works out to be very close to bell's, but I am just happy not being directly under them, and having unlimited bandwidth. Added to that, Acanac gives you 100GB free online storage, and a free virtual computer (which I actually use a lot), its a pretty good deal.

Buyer beware: their tech support is not great, so do not expect 24/7 tech support. Once you get them on the phone or email, they are pretty good.

for a comprehensive listing of Canadian ISPs:

http://www.canadianisp.com/

ps. fyi. all CityPlace condos have Telus 100Mbit unlimited internet for $49

There is a TA who owns his own ISP and VOIP (not piggy backing Rogers or Bell) but right now only offers service to business (one residential...PM me with where you live and I can let you know if he services it).

There's also 3Web/CIA https://www.cia.com

I switched to them for High Speed Cable Internet from Rogers and save over $10/month. If I needed the home phone service then it would only be another $5/month.

And if I get anyone else to sign up, I get a month for free!
