Armin van Buuren using Ableton?

I heard that Armin uses Ableton to do his weekly ASOT radio shows, is that true?

I don't blame him. He can't count the Imagine earnings if he has to deal with pesky turntables.

...he's been mixing on CD's and Vinyl well before the arrival of Ableton, and generally speaking, with better than average results. I'm pretty sure he does the same for his live gigs.

I think he first started using Ableton around 2005, when he used it to mix ASOT 2005.

I think he was being sarcastic.

If you listen to some of his transitions in the earlier episodes (some time around 130-150), they were not that spectacular.

Except prearranged sets are lifeless and boring. I'm looking at you too, Sasha & Diggers.

How are they lifeless, because they weren't picked live in a club? DJ still had to put the set together. For all you know, a DJ you see in a club could be playing a pre-planned or in some (sad and rare) cases a pre-recorded set!

DJing is about reading the crowd. There's no crowd in the living room / office / airplane (well, one that's responding to your set)

Not really. More like reading the atmosphere.

Djing is about playing music. If it's in a club with tons of folks, you read, feed, and follow thier energy. If it's at a home/studio, then you have the freedom to make a musical journey of your choice. You can carefully craft and shape a soundscape to your meticulous desires.

Both are different no doubt, and both have thier merits; but in the end its ALL about the music. I feel a good DJ can put together a beautiful set regardless of where he is and who's energy he's feeding off of.

Perhaps, and it makes sense. But experience tells me that prearranged sets = slight boredom.

there is nothing wrong with being prepared and knowing your music.
yeah you read the crowd or atmosphere, but you don't get behind the decks not having any idea what kinda of set you want to play.

Being prepared, knowing your music, and PREARRANGING A SET IN ABLETON are very different things.

I'm gonna go with 2004ish since he did ASOT 182 as a megamix through Ableton.
