M_NUS presents Contakt

quote:
Minus break their ten weeks of silence with a string of concept parties featuring a glowing cube.

The dates, which kick off with a night in Detroit during the DEMF, will feature Richie Hawtin and a rotating cast of Minus members including Magda, Troy Pierce, Marc Houle, Gaiser and Heartthrob. The DJs and live sets wont be happening one after another, apparently, but the parties will feature collaborations between Minus artists throughout the night.

So what about this cube, then?

It seems the Minus crew spent their ten weeks off dreaming up a concept and theme to go with the parties, which sees the artists dressing up as sci-fi characters with slick visuals and a dedicated website to match. Theres also a whole backstory about the cube, of course, which is described in the press notes as a mysterious object discovered in a clandestine excavation site. Initial tests reveal a dense, carbon-based structure utilizing liquid crystal technology. While its origins remain unclear it seems to have been created by intelligence far greater than our own.

What is apparent is that the Cube is a highly advanced communications device that responds positively to the presence of humans and interacts accordingly, explains, er, Guardian of the Cube Richie Hawtin. By acting as a central hub it seems to allow us to direct our thoughts, collect and share ideas, transcend language and interconnect musically in ways previously not possible."

We're not sure quite what to make of that.

Anyway, to get involved, you'll need to buy a membership card, which is embedded with a microchip which can make contact with the cube. This puts you in the running for various prizes, downloads and allows you to tune into a wireless network during the gig.

M_NUS Contakt

What do you guys think of this? To me, I think it could either be really cheesy, or kind of cool. I'm betting on the really cheesy. Good on the M_NUS guys for taking a risk though and trying something new.

wonder if this kinda stuff will ever happen in TO?

would be a nice feature to have during Luminato or Nuit Blanche .. but alas, all the music featured must be adult contemporary

ahha Emery, holy fuck. If you don't like Toronto or Canada why don't you move?! 9 of 10 times your posts are about your disdain for both.

(re: Cube concept)

what!? lol

hahaha
i guess it depends on how serious they take it.
if its just for laughs,
meant to be neat and fun,
then it will be just that.
but if they take it seriously itll probably be cheesy.
theyve been pretty serious for a while but releasing a track like 'techno vocals', for example,
shows that hawtin would seem to have a sense of humour about his music.
perhaps this will be along the same lines?

Posted by dirtbag on May-09-2008 21:40:

hmm
i just check out the site.
richie seems to be taking it pretty seriously

Posted by musicsnob_NOT on May-09-2008 22:42:

looks like its Montreal or another trip to Europe in the Fall

Graham, I think you were wrong about Richie and his Captain Highliner beard. After looking at the website its obvious he's Obi-Wan.

This looks so good, i really hope they get ritchie for labour of love

Posted by UmmiE on May-10-2008 17:51:

I think ritchie should play by himself a night based on him being the only headliner DJ now that will be epic, just like Marco Carola @ footwork on the 24th.

It's hard to infer the underlying attitude from a write-up. If it's just off-the-wall silliness then I'm sure it could be fun. But I get the impression that they're taking this way too seriously, otherwise it would sound, err, sillier. More exaggerated maybe.

The intent is exactly what will determine whether it's kind of cool or cheesy and tacky as all hell. Based solely on the advertising, I'm leaning toward the latter. But the majority of sketchbags in the crowd wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

(again, good on them for taking a risk though!)

Posted by jalalinator on May-10-2008 22:06:

how about we all STOP hating and over-analyzing every single thing and be happy that we can all go to Montreal on the 29th of August to see this

viva m_nus!

Posted by rabbitjoker on May-10-2008 22:19:

I tried to by the membership card but it is 404.

Posted by 1dawoman on May-10-2008 22:54:

Montreal might be a possibility depending on who they'll round up for LOL this year... a membership card though? sounds too gimmicky for me (and my wallet)...

It's a gang of my favorite artists along with my favorite label and my first reaction was WOAH!

I WISH I could go /to/ this label party and check out Montreal too, but sadly I won't be able to, my left knee hurts
