My laptop battery lasts 10 minutes

absolutely pathetic. anyone have theories on maximising battery lifespan? does anyone else have this problem? i mostly have the laptop plugged in to the mains at my desk. now it dies in ten minutes. at 77% it said it was going to reserve power. in the time it took to write this post it went from 33% to 0%. in theory it should be off by now...

whats your point?

buy a new one dumbass

Posted by DaRoZa on May-10-2008 07:46:

rechargeable batteries always die after repeated use... time to order a new one. if you really need it away from a plug until then, completely draining the battery then charging it to full will give its maximum life

thats only for batteries that have a charge memory such as nickel-cadmium. lithium ion and nickel-metal hydride do not require it.

Try changing the setting so when you unplug the laptop itll dim the screen anywhere from 30-50% That should save you a lot of power. Youre best bet is obviously buying a new battery for that you should definitely checkout ebay.

Beware of EBay batts...

They're usually cheap knock off's and have a very shitty lifespan...

Best bet is buy a namebrand battery...but pricey...

Laptops are so cheap these days...its like ink cartridges...

Do you buy a new battery or just a new laptop...

When your laptop is plugged in, you should take the battery out...having it plugged in while the battery is still in is what killed it.

(I know, I did this to my own. Battery life went from 3 hours to 1 now )

Avg battery life for a notebook is about 3-4 hours, the half life of it (meaning how long it takes for it to lose it's charge down to half of the original) is about a year. So after a year it should be 1.5-2 hours and half of that in another year. So your battery is probably a few years old I assume.

I seem to recall reading something about Dell and other computer rigging their batteries to essentially become useless after x amount of charges.. where as they should be able to last significantly longer. This forces people to buy the batteries more often.

i KNOW i read about this somewhere last year... looking for an article now. Read it in more than one place.

EDIT: found something about it!

evidently, but when i drop $$$ on a new battery i want to know the ways to maximise its lifespan.

the amount of time actually spent off a power source was minimal so the draw on the battery should not have been high as i pointed out

this would be good advice for when it's docked, cheers

i will check the kind of battery, but i know some have 'memoryless' capacity

in this sense i mean it is fine if you drop the battery to 70% or 50% and then want to charge back up vs having to drain it fully and re-charging. has anyone experienced if either of these treatments is more or less detremental to the battery?

mine did that
then it melted itself
.. go get it fixed before it dies

if it melted then there was an internal short.
not all batteries that cannot hold a charge have an internal short. most of the time its just an old battery. i have a really really old p3 ibm thinkpad and the battery lasts about 2 minutes so i always have to have it plugged in. its been that way for about 5 years.

stupid laptop
I think I threw mine too many times
hahaha whoops

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm - scroll down to "Simple Guidelines" - he says keep 'em charged up, drain fully every 30 times or so (once a month?), long-term storage at 40% charge.

I do this, basically I keep my 3 year old laptop plugged in most of the time, I still get 2 - 3 hours when on batteries (got 4 when it was new).

Same rules for cellphones.

had that on my old HP
the secret is to keep the battery out of the laptop if you keep it plugged in (i do, i used it a stationary machine so the only time I need batter life is when we have a blackout)

get a new battery and move on :P

My Acer doesn't turn on without the battery in it...

But yah....the only solution is to get a new battery...

that's strange..

how is it strange? it could be wired so that an inserted battery completes a closed circuit. open circuit = no power.

Posted by VERTiG0 on May-10-2008 22:51:

It's because Acer manufactures junk.

Posted by StereoPrincess on May-10-2008 22:58:

lol. my batter last so little that sometimes I don't have enough juice to even power up the computer and have all the stuff load before it goes to sleep.

Posted by DigitalMP on May-10-2008 23:01:

I last 11...

because I thought that all laptops operate without a battery, while being plugged in? lol
didn't think of that explanation

Posted by me@t k@tie on May-11-2008 00:06:

My battery is completely useless - 0 seconds life. As soon as you unplug the laptop, it instantly dies. And I bought it only in August 2005. Shitty deal with them. My laptop's worth as much as a new battery right now, heh. I wish I could take it out, but conveniently the laptop wobbles (it's one of the support stands) without it. It would weigh nothing without it, grrr.
