Dunno veterans

hey how ya doing i have a bit of a question is the ability to pickup 2 differant records and just mix them in at will something that comes only once youve mastered basically everything else because always thought with mixing thats what it involved picking the rigth record you want WHILE your in the mix i didnt like the notion of pre planning BUT after sucking REALLY hard on my decks i discovered i peform alot better when i have some idea of at tracklist based on knowing how some tracks mix together... it almost seems liek cheating but for now its really the only way i can get a mix goin....
but all i ever wanted to do was pick up 2 records on the spur of th emoment and create a incredible mix my question is obviously you would need knowledge of the tracks and all but that aside is it possible? and if so when and how am i gonna be able too does it just take a shit load of practice? because i dont understand what skill needs to be developed in order to do this? expereince? lots?

Ghost Smilie

basically what it boils down to is yes pratice, but when you mix you need to have a general knowledge of the track.

yah pretty much, beatmatching isn't hard because beats are beats whether they're slow or fast, but being able to cue it up right can be difficult if ur not familiar w/ the tracks, but u have time while the other track is playing to figure out where u wanna cue the next one in.. sometimes i trade crates w/ someone in my dj crew for fun to see if we can mix each others shit.. but its kinda different because i'm the one who spins trance, but its not too difficult to mix house and techno either.. haven't really gotten around to spinning drum n' bass but it seems like fun

I hate to admit it but yeah I think that's pretty much it. I suck too but practise will always make you better.

yeah just practice. it's like i mentioned in a prior thread. through constant practice you just know what your records sound like and you know which records go well together cuz you've practiced mixing them before. now when you're in a gig you have an idea of the mood you wanna start with so you drop those plates and see how the crowd reacts. if they like it then go with the theme and you don't have to worry about a preplanned set cuz through the hours of practice you will just know which record to put on next. if they don't like it then you'll know which records to use to tranistion to different genres and go from there. i know cuz i hadn't practiced in two months and i had to play two house parties that i completely bombed recently. then i had a gig on mother's day so i finally got around to practicing the week beforehand and that gig was significantly better. so a long winded answer to say practice. cheers and keep up the good work. it'll get better as it goes but it does get frustrating at times.

Once you hear your tunes over and over and over again you can tell what is going to mix in well with it. Having just mixed out a tune another tune will pop into your head, wow they would go well together, it just happens eventually. But never ever disregard having tunes that you know mix well together, I know many biggish name djs in my country who enjoy having "chains" of tunes that work well together. It works, but just remember not to play these chains ever single time you play or people will become bored with your sets.
