Soccer ?

ok so what is the difference between the Champions League and the UEFA Cup

apart from their names.

Posted by nchs09 on May-12-2008 02:02:

soccer?

fail.

Posted by Intuition on May-12-2008 02:13:

Champions League is what it says. It's for Champions, and involves the top teams across Europe (top 4 from England, Spain, and France, etc.), and UEFA Cup is the best of the rest (usually the 5th and 6th from those same leagues, cup winners, and the top teams in other crappy leagues from the continent).

In a nutshell. I'm sure Wikipedia does a much better job.

Posted by Zild on May-12-2008 03:17:

Champions League is the top European club tournament while the Cup is secondary.

Posted by daydreamer on May-12-2008 16:16:

right, because i was watching a barca game and the announcer said something to the effect of

now that barcelona is longer number two in the league it would have to qualify for Champions league...so that's why i was asking.

and since i haven't seen any UEFA cup games but i keep hearing about it i was wondering.

i recently started to get into soccer, seriously that is.

i always used to watch just the world cup as a kid, and nothing else.
so i still don't know the ins and outs of everything.

ciao

Yes, the Champions League is the main competition, and UEFA Cup is a secondary competition.

The top leagues in the UEFA ranking by nations (Italy, England and Spain) work in the following way:

a) the champion and the 2nd placed go directly to the Champions League

b) the 3rd and 4th placed go into a knock-out round versus teams from other countries. Whoever wins those games, goes to the Champions League. Whoever loses, goes to UEFA Cup.

c) the 5th, 6th placed, or possibly others, depending on who wins the national cup(s), go to the UEFA Cup.

So what you heard the commentator talking about is that Barcelona no longer applies to a) but will go to b).

The leagues that are weaker than the italian, spanish and english ones, have less teams going into these competitions. For example in Portugal the 4th placed goes to the UEFA Cup instead of playing the knock-out round for qualifying into the Champions League. In really shitty countries like Armenia or whatever, only the champion can go to the Champions League, and even then they have to win 3 knock-out rounds to reach it.

lol, armenia.

its not really for champions then is it.
I think its rubbish how a team can finish 4th and win the champions league it really should be the champions from each country then they would have the right to call it the champions league but like everything else its about the money.

Well that's the whole platform Platini was running on when he became President of UEFA, to reduce the number of teams coming from the bigger leagues in Europe to allow more room for actual 'champions' to make it to group stage, etc.

Who knows, we could see some changes in the future, but seeing how bureaucratic the process can be (e.g. we have to wait until 2010 until for the Champions League Final to be held on a weekend, even though the change was made in 2007), it may take some time until it's fully approved.

That doesn't make any sense. The Champions League would be what...5, 6 teams? That would be incredibly boring. Adversely, is it fair to deny Chelsea a spot in the Champions League because they're TWO points away from Man United?

The difference is the Champions League is broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN Deportes while UEFA Cup is broadcasted on Fox Sports and Fox Sports en espaol.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the anthem for the Champions League is the gayest thing you'll ever hear. if you close your eyes you can swear you're hearing the anthem to sensation white and not to a football tournament.

That's pretty much it.

Enjoy the ride!

I always thought it was weird that they make the players stand on the pitch and they have to act like its a normal national anthem. lammme

I see no problem with how the champions league is set up now

Posted by nchs09 on May-14-2008 08:11:

No, 40+ teams, UEFA has over 40 countries. The Champions League (called "Champions Cup" at the time) used to be like this until the early 90s actually - only the champion from each country qualified, and the others went to UEFA Cup.

But I don't agree that the cup should come back to those days, I think this format is much more entertaining. For some reason people get really annoyed with calling it "Champions League", so change the name of the competition and everyone should stfu.

problem is, platini and blatter (uefa & fifa bosses) are both jerks, with no actual interest in what people want, just their own agendas. Sure, making less teams from england, spain & italy will allow the champions of lesser footballing nations to make the group stage, but we've already seen what happens to those kind of teams, they get hammered, Arsenal 7-0 Sparta Prague (who are by no means the worst of the european champions to get in, imagine san marino, faroes etc)

and if they had any guts, they'd rename it back to what it used to be: European Cup.

That song has been played to death. I'm so sick of hearing it

Posted by Dervish on May-14-2008 16:52:

I don't mind the tune. But is quite funny how the Champions League Final is between two English teams and a Scottish one is in the UEFA Cup Final meaning 3 of the 4 teams in the finals are British.

Posted by The_G0dfather on May-15-2008 08:12:

also funny how neither of them will attend the EC

Posted by Intuition on May-15-2008 15:53:

The song still gives me goosebumps (after watching 10 years of Champions League this year), but especially before really big games. Makes me feel like I can conquer the world or something.

And yes, British (English really, but anyway) dominance is undisputed in Europe right now. It's a constant ebb and flow between Spain (Real Madrid Vs. Valencia in the 1999/2000 finals), Italy (Milan Vs. Juventus in the 2002/2003 finals), and sometimes Germany (Bayern Munich and Bayer Lervekusen in 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, respectively), but this will now be 5 English teams in the past 4 finals.

it took a long time for the british clubs to learn how to play the modern european game, and Liverpool have obviously been the best exponents of it in recent years. In the 90s especially, many teams could not play the correct way and as such, suffered because of it.
