What do you like/dislike about Toronto

This thread was inspired by a recent post by Emery saying he had a love/hate relationship about the place.

For both those who live here, and those who don't, what do you like and dislike about the city? Please specify in your post whether you live here or not.

I live here.

Pros:

- Great nightlife
- Lots of great cultural events in the city (especially in the summer)
- Great employment opportunities for the line of work I'd like to get into (I'm pretty sure the employment opportunities in Toronto are pretty good in general)
- Low crime rate / generally a safe city to live in
- Friendly people
- Affluent yuppie culture
- Creative and multi-faceted fashion scene (among the general public, not necessarily fashion designers)
- Lots of parks and trees
- Lots of general "variety" in the city due to the large number off immigrant communities that exist

Cons:

- Horrible transit system
- Undeveloped waterfront
- Municipal governments that never fix the above problems
- It's in North America (ie not very ideal for traveling)
- "Fun police" trying to shut things down like Cherry Beach, clubs, and making it difficult to have festivals that play electronic music

Posted by exstasie on May-14-2008 11:41:

wow...you pretty much nailed it in for me there!

I agree 100% with all that!!

I would just add to one of the Cons is the Traffic....
Traffic sucks bigtime around the City (including GTA if you want). And its not just traffic, but also the maintenance of roads, especially highways...

But to be fair, we do have a pretty awesome highway system compared to many other cities out there...now only if the road conditions were better and a bit less traffic lol

The things I like about Toronto are sorta the same things I dislike about it, lol.

I love that there's so much to do at any given time...theres always a variety of things going on. But at the same time, I don't like Toronto's pace of life...the general hustle and bustle of any big city really.

Posted by Skipper on May-14-2008 12:23:

Toronto has really grown on me the last few years. At one point I couldn't wait to leave. Now I'm getting settled here, at least for the next few years.

I echo everything that Graham said. The transit is probably my biggest complaint.

Toronto Maple Leafs....you can put that in both the pro and the con

Posted by Nicolas Oliver on May-14-2008 12:36:

Con: The smell of sewage in some areas.

Posted by Sasha on May-14-2008 12:37:

there is no parks or squares in Toronto, no open spaces.
it's fkn DIRTY
architecture sucks
it's too cold in winter, too hot in summer
people are rude and smell bad

everything else i like

The overall smell of Toronto on a hot humid day

Graham you nailed it for me. And working on the Harbourfront and getting asked everyday where a patio is along here, urks me because I have no idea why it is not being utilized. Chicago knows what their doing!

Coming from the country to the city and being witness to the different lifestyles, I NOW appreciate both, it took some adjusting. I know though, that the city lifestyle will not be my permanant.

I rather like the parks / trails in Toronto. I used to think "Bah, there's no green spaces in Toronto / no places to hike, *grumble*", then one day I decided to get off my ass and start walking. Things I like about Toronto

- The Don Valley paths/trails
- The Brickworks
- High Park
- Cherry Beach Sundays
- Toronto Islands
- Rouge Valley
- Scarborough Bluffs
- Loads of walking/biking trails

Sure, it's no real Central Park or anything, but it's not terrible either. I've rather enjoyed the past few summers exploring the parks / trails / green spaces that Toronto has to offer. If you dont have a car, join up with the Toronto Bruce Trail club to get a bit more 'real' nature into your summer outings.

I find that if you look at Google Maps of Toronto, I see quite a bit of green on the map.

Graham you pretty much summed it up for me.

I'd add food to your pro list and ugly condos to your cons list (although that sort of fits into the waterfront part).

Oh I appreciate it...but at the end of the day I'm a simple person who prefers a more simple life.

Posted by teufel-man on May-14-2008 13:42:

Pros:
-Lots of pro sports (Jays, Raptors, Leafs, Toronto FC, Argos, etc.)
-Lots of great restaurants due to multicultural population
-Great electronic music scene, tons of great locals and we have top notch international DJs coming in weekly

Cons:
-Winter makes you wanna hibernate from Dec-Mar

Posted by jon jon on May-14-2008 13:45:

Pros:

- Life here is fucking cheap, safe + easy haha (for a major city anyways)
- da women (buheee)
- diversity WITH acceptance (a model for every other major city to follow?)

I generally like to bitch about everything (hah), and yet I find very little wrong with the TTC lol I swear I'm the only one in Toronto who seems grateful riding the streetcar/subway.

+1 to all these points.... and the TTC isnt that bad at all, except the fact that they continuously raise fares!

Posted by Knox on May-14-2008 13:54:

also agree with Graham on many pros/cons of the city.

I do find it fun to explore around in the summer as well.

High Park is a favourite of mine.

The waterfront (which i'm impartial too) does need a lot of work, which is not being done, but I love to walk the waterfront at sunset.

Toronto Island is my other favourite spot in the city.

EDM scene is great....Many up and coming locals.

Footwork.

Multiculturalism.

Queen Street West.

I dislike the transit system at times, it needs a lot of work for such a large city...but for the most part gets you from Point A to Point B.

Too much construction. Everywhere. All the time.

All in all I don't have a lot of complaints about Toronto. I'm happy to live here and happy to say that I do!

Posted by UmmiE on May-14-2008 13:59:

I love how in Toronto(downtown only) is up and running late late hours where as Mrs.Sauga after 11pm most streets are so dead......

The only thing I hate about Toronto is high costs for Parking.....This is where Mrs.Sauga owns all of you no parking issues always room to park and barely you will see paid parking otherwise its always free.

Yeah for sure, someone has to cover rising costs.... the TTC cant just operate on a loss every year just because its a nice thing to do

LMAO

I'm not sure about friendly people thing... More like people don't care whether you exist or not and just go about their business.

Multiculturalism... Among younger generation it's a good thing because they are more adaptable and accepting, but among older folks for a lot of them, multiculturalism consist of tolerating others... (or making money off of them)

<3 yes
overall I don't find anything to dislike that is not there in other cities I've been to, so won't complain much
TTC really needs improvement, we need AT LEAST a subway system that runs 24 hours a day

but otherwise life in general is pretty sweet I guess it helped that I came here early enough, attended uni and all

I live in TO, so:

Like:
-Great restaurants, nightlife, cultural events, and other entertaining fascilities.
-Thriving EDM culture
-A venue for pretty much any sort of interest you could possibly have
-Enough friendly people*
-Lots of growth opportunities, and lots of potential for improvement*

Dislikes:
-TTC. Unless you live along the major lines, commuting is a hassle.
-Lots and lots of very rude people with heavy attitudes.
-Nanny-state officials and policies
-Lots of unutilized opportunities, lots of great potential wasted on nothing (waterfront and other surrounding areas)
-General hectic pace of life. I used to love it, but now it is getting tiresome.

The Don Valley trails rule. I grew up riding bikes/rollerblading along those trails and know them like the back of my hand.

Anyone who says Toronto has no parks or green spaces obviously isn't looking hard enough!
