Trance DJs:

I'm trying to move into the trance scene and I'm having trouble deciding which set-up to buy. I have prior experience doing some hip-hop/top40 BS with a Serato setup, but I don't know if Serato would be the best choice for getting doing trance. I sold everything I had dj-related about a year ago to pull up my grades and during that time really started listening to trance/electronica and hating hip-hop/top40. I know what I want to do with my music ... it's like I hear opportunities to mix certain things in, sample acapellas, blend tracks, I recognize when things need to be added in specific areas to make the mix flow, & etc. I am very influenced by Armin's A State of Trance radio series but still do my own thing.

What software setup should I be getting? Is Ableton Live the way to go for trance DJs, even now with Serato 1.8 out? I was thinking that I should go with the Rane TTM57SL mixer, but I see people on here going on about the Ecler EVO5, Traktor Scratch, Ableton ... I don't know what I should do.

Buy the one thats right for you. If you dont have specific questions, you haven't done enough research.

+obligatory 'die in a fire if you're an alt' clause.

Tons of creative things can be done with ableton. Why shoudn't they?

Posted by TaylorR on May-14-2008 19:45:

it's a matter of preference.

Serato just works, plain and simple. It does exactly what I want it to do.

I agree with u...trance with the typical Ableton usage has not sounded good from what I have heard.

Shoot me down if you want, i never post in these ableton wars but IMHO, you can of course use Ableton to do tonnes of creative stuff in any genre.

However to me, Trance is a but more simple. Not in a bad way, but i think it has more of a linear flow compared to other genres. Introducing too many sources can sometimes ruin it for me. Compared to other genres where you can layer tonnes of inputs on top of each other.

I dunno, just my 2c. Of course you can use it though (ableton).

If i was starting from scratch, i'd probably get myself some CDJ's. However, i love my 1210's and Serato.

Get a good mixer though. Too many people skimp on the mixer.

i just think theres a vast difference between good creativity and creativity used just to make something sound different. trance is often already so packed and mudded with sounds its kind of pointless

'good creativity' is a bit subjective. What it comes down to is, can a dj put together a good trance set in ableton? As long as that answer is yes the discussion is moot.

**EDIT** <--- not an ableton user ftr.

A better question still i suppose would be, Is ableton wasted on a Trance set?

(of course the smart arses out there will say, it's only wasted if the person using it doesn't know how best to use it..)

It's just another one of those debates.

Bottom line is, yes you can use it. It'll work.

Nonesense. The reason I think ableton lends itself well to other genres such as minimal, tech or funky house, is that those types of music can be very basic in terms of their layers and instruments, often just rely on loops. Very complex melodies and loops can just get lost when not properly balanced with or against each other, and trance consitst often of long evolving melodies and loops.

A lot of people think that Trance is simple becuase we are exposed in the mainstream to a lot formulaic rubbish, that just have elements that build on such predictable bases. good trance is incredibly layered and requires serious attention paid to the balancing of elements, to provide flow.

A interesting point to highlight this is I've noted a few people saying they find it near impossible to mix older trance with modern trance in Ableton, saying the "beats sound different somehow" or the melodies don't layer when trying to bring in older trance in new trance tracks. I think this is indicative of older types of trance being less forumlaic (in all preduction respects) and therefore harder to combine with music of a different strain.

this is great advice - a lot of people blow loads of cash on decks, a laptop etc. but the mixer is probably the one part of my setup I am most concerned with when doing a mix.
That's why I hunted for mine for 3 years!

Token Torq plug.

DJ Rann: you hunted for your mixer for 3 years?!? damn!

What did you end up with? I assume this is your current recommendation? What is your opinion on the TTM56 (or 57, if it's actually worth the price difference)?

trance... ugh! it is the most beautiful music on earth imo, but there is just no market for it in the united states. if i'm cleaning my room or somehting i'll play a trance track, clean for about 7 or 8 minutes, mix the next track in (which takes about a minute), and then clean some more.
