New Nick Warren interview...

Short and sweet.

He provides only a brief hint as to the nature of his upcoming GU, but offers some interesting info across the board (especially concerning the latest WOW developments).

I liked his GU 24: Reyjavik, hopefully this one is as good.

I guess the big question is whether progressive really has a future anymore. With new Way Out West material, I'd love to think it will. But I worry it will be a "living in the past" retrospective, like Moby's latest album, rather than a genuine advance.

Nick Warren: I think the many you are talking about are the very few, typically the message forum community. The sales of GU are very, very strong. My latest album, Paris, has already gone silver in Europe alone. GU is very much a global brand, recognized and sold on every continent...and Felix da Housecat is the latest fresh face among us GU faithfuls!


interesting. he has a point about the messageboards but then he quickly starts to sound like puppet for GU. respect to him and his music regardless.

I don't think anyone denies the strength of GU sales, as irrespective as to its status compared with other mix series', their reputation alone provides them with a sturdy platform to continue being profitable for many years to come.

That said, I'm not sure how highly regarded GU is in the 'pushing boundaries' department of mix compilation releases. I think Fabric and Balance (Fabric in particular) have established themselves in the minds of many listeners as far edgier than GU, with promoting lesser known names that deliver sets that are anything but typical. I think people intent upon extending their electronic music horizons look to Fabric and Balance well before picking up anything released by GU (though this has been less of a case with Freeland's and Layo & Bushwacka!'s installments).

exactly. GU is a huge brand and will always generate a substantial number of sales but that wasn't the question that was posed. Nick's not naive, he that knows quality and mass appeal are not necessarily one and the same so I find his answer to be a bit of a cop-out

I think what the interviewer is trying to get it at is that GU needs fresh blood, and they seem to have been ducking that problem for awhile now. I mean, how many Warren/Dubfire/Sharam/Felix da Housecat (LOL) comps do we have to put up with before they INVEST in someone who could actually use a GU to push the envelope and do something new?

Btw I am a huge fan of Nick and have hung out with him and Jody, and I think he has a fair point about getting an artist that will actually sell something, but come on, this is dance music, not top40. Its OK to go with a sure thing once in awhile, but GU really needs to switch it up.

He's still got a fantastic taste in music. I've really enjoyed a lot his more recent stuff like the last WOW album and his remix of Cafe Del Mariachi.

His remix was nice, but really just big room prog that doesn't really fit anywhere else. Last time I saw him thats all he played, with terrible mixing to boot.

It felt like a trance set, just one huge prog track after another, little else to hold on to.

But hey, thats just my opinion, no need for lame personal attacks.

I agree with you, for the most part, but I think the sorry state of progressive has just as much to do with it as Warren. He's doing pretty well considering the massive declines in progressive quality and quantity over the past four years.

It's sad, because nothing has really come along to replace the progressive ethos. For people who don't feel the newer trends, it can be difficult to maintain old standards.

What is this "Big room prog"? Like...Deadmau5?

the whole "GU needs an artist that can sell" point of view is completely off because as mentioned already, the brand GU is enough to sell it on it's own. The only reason they haven't is because they are lazy and worn out.

i also love how dj's always kinda jab the online communities because we know better. It's not our fault if dj's/producers music gets stale and boring. they don't have to care about our opinions of course, but it's just kinda funny.

man i love nick warren, and his GU08in brazil was amazing,but i think new djs need to be brought to the light through GU, and not just the same old guys over and over again.

I can't really comment about Warren's more recent sets because I haven't had the time to listen, but I've never had a problem with him playing a lot of 'big room prog' tunes because he is really good at selecting the best of them. While he plays bigger tunes he tends to pick one's that still have a lot of charm

I did listen to one of his recent sets that was put up on hybridized though, and yeah, that was probably a bit down on his usual standard.

I just like it when sets go a few places, and he was really sticking to just one sound the whole time.

He does prog well, imo, on GU 24 CD2.

Yeah your probably right (And I'm not being sarcastic).
