Getting trance music

Where do you get your trance music from?
Do you limewire, buy CDs, or go on websites for mixes and productions?

Ive been using limewire but it doesnt seem to have the stuff Im looking for (not a lot of trance in there, in my opinion), so where do you suggest me looking to download some trance and chillout music.

p.s.
What is the proper genre called chillout? Is it slang for some other genre, or is chillout just chillout.

Myself and I know a ton of users here use Beatport.

Beatport is nice, however... it's got issues and you've got to supplement it with another site. For example it tends not to carry older trance and it also enforces regional releases, meaning if the CD hasn't been released in your area then they don't let you download it. (So goddamn dumb with digital content, frankly.)

For example right now, all of Sander Van Doorn's stuff that he's released in the last 3-6 months is region protected in the US, which is unfortunate, because he has put out some rad stuff. What makes it even stupider is some of the releases may have track A, but track A also appears on another release, so track A may not be downloadable from X release, but if you try to download it from Y release, you can get it. Make sense? Not to me either, but that's the way it is. There are obviously ways around that in various legal and illegal ways.

For tracks that don't appear on beatport or a similar site like Juno (there's a list of all of these posted somewhere that you can search for), you have to get crafty, some guys go to Itunes for very big releases but if you're a DJ this is hit or miss because you might not get the bitrate you want, so track it down on amazon or with the individual publisher. If you're only looking for one certain track, discogs is a nice way to make sure that you're getting the release with the least amount of tracks you do not want, IE you can see if the "original mix" of a track appears on a certain EP or LP or compilation instead of a full artist release. It's a great place to buy as well, but you have to stay up to date on it.

I've never had good luck with ebay for finding a specific release, most records/releases going up on ebay are huge ridiculous package deals of random shit that's intentionally got a few hard to find vinyls tossed in with 40 coasters-to-be.

I hit up my local record stores too, if you're euro this is obviously much nicer, if you're in a big urban area in the US (LA, NY, SF) there's going to be specialty shops that specialize in EDM or huge indie mega stores like Amoeba that will be more likely to carry the records you want.

And as for chill/chill out, it's a genre. It's basically a downtempo/lounge style that would be played in "chillout" rooms in clubs, IE much more relaxed/relaxing. I've heard chillout described as electronica over slower hip hop beats and BPM ranges, which applies to a lot of big chill (Nightmares on Wax falls into this category) but it doesn't necessarily apply to some equally big names (Like Boards of Canada)

Limewire... I get all my hardstyle and deadmau5 from there.

Discogs.com if I'm going to buy something I want the CD and that usually has everything.

Beatport is the way to go.

If you want to be a bastard and not pay (like me), invest in some file-sharing programs.

Question, if someone re-distributes a licensed MP3, that still constitutes piracy, correct?

Chillout is wrongly used term (just like uplifting trance for example) for several different subgenres of downtempo music, most often ambient, trip hop or nu jazz.

The term was coined in late 80's after chill out rooms, where people would go to relax (chill out) from dancing. Thanks to every other downtempo compilation from the 90's that had Chill Out in its title (one of the most famous (and the most quality) was Rising High's Chill Out Or Die series) the term has stucked and these days it's probably more widely used than downtempo (or leftfield (another term for downtempo music)).

The only problem with the term downtempo is that it tends to include some forms of music that have no tempo (like ambient or some types of new age music), so it's not always too convenient to use, but I'd say it's still better than chill out (which doesn't describe the music, but the way you feel from listening to it).

Downbeat is the stuff generally at 120bpm(but from 75bpm to there as well) that has a clear (and in some cases danceable) beat. Ambient does not equal downbeat.

Nobody say it does. But if you're gonna put it under the umbrella term, downtempo is definitely the best choice.

Ok on second thoughts was definitely thinking of downbeat not downtempo. As downtempo would ecompass everything at said tempo range and also "this is hardly downtempo" well downtempo refers to tempo not much else.
