So this is my latest promo mix (i.e. not for radio or for the sake of fucking around ), and also my artist mix for AMP this year. No dicking around this time, just straight up drummy, loopy, repetitive techno and tech house with just the one classic to close it out. There are definitely a couple dodgy mixes in this one - but I thought everything was phrased alright and that they recovered, so we'll see.

Massive thanks to those of you around here who are a big part of keeping me so motivated to do this stuff particularly Myra, Tom, Adam, Clovis, Bas, Tony, Sushi, Bobby, Az, Jake, Mathias, Jeff, and the rest of those of you whom I'm either too stoned or lazy to remember at the moment.

Definitely want to send special thanks on this one, however, to Clovis and d-miurge for keeping me inspired this week - I hope the both of you enjoy it.

Damn Rob, you're churning these out fast... I'm in!

EDIT: #10 I can't wait to hear what you've done with Karu - Maraud Your Ears (Tim Paris We Almost Lost Detroit Mix). So damn tricky, that particular track.

I'll download as soon as I finish downloading Myra's set

Yeah - I was really just cocking around on the decks earlier today trying to get an idea, so I figured that one wouldn't last. It was just one of those sets where you have a lot of fun playing it, but when you listen to the recording you realize "OK, programmings on - but meh, this was probably more of a 'fun in the moment' set than anything else."

cmay - I've actually had to get the last two done by deadlines, usually I don't like to get so much up at once. If I had one thing to say it's that the last (Frisky) set was really a "radio" set - not much of a promo mix, at least I didn't treat it as such. I definitely put a lot of work into making this one come together, and I think in general, I'm much more pleased with this (on the same level as "Sounds like Robots" and "Return to the Outside") than most others.

Also, RE: the "Maraud Your Ears" edit - remember the SOS balance thread and that I'm telling you the words "training wheels" probably say it all in retrospect.

Thanks for the downloads guys - hope you enjoy it.

Edit: Also, props to Vana and Clovis for making me listen to Art Bleek.

Oh, I was not aware that you had deadlines for these mixes. Just started listening to this one. Enjoying what I hear so far, will let you know what I thought after I'm done.

Lol, I didn't mean to make it sound like I had a lot of them - it's just an odd month, and the Frisky set had to be done by the beginning, and AMP is relaunching their website on Friday, so they were kind of pushing me to have it ready by then as I'm doing the featured artist deal for them in June.

It's good to see you getting all this exposure lately. You damn deserve it

Thanks boss - but to be fair, there are a lot of people on this forum who deserve a lot more than they get. I'm grateful even a few folks put me in the same league as some of the other fellows on here.

Yeah, I'm realizing the amount of talent on this board lately. About a year ago, I started to change my preconceptions that 'bedroom' or 'not-so-famous' DJs could not compare to the big names. It's stupid, I know, and I kick myself every single day for not tuning in sooner, but I think we all go through this stupid 'OMG PVD IS GOD!!!' phase, when first listening to electronic music.

That being said, I've downloaded sets by a bunch of TAs, including: you, Myra, Clovis, Bas, cmay, Allied Nations, DJ Metatron, and a few others that constantly put up quality mixes and work really hard at what they love. Actually, I feel privileged to be a part of TA and have a chance to discuss music (and sometimes even flying penises and buttseckz ) with all these artists.

In!

By the way, longest song title ever on your edit there, lol.

Halfway through and I'm liking it a good deal more than I expected to (not really into tech house or loopy techno too much)... great percussion, the first half has an organic proggy sound... like something you'd hear on an old Bedrock comp or on a Dave Seaman Global Underground.

Cool to hear you say that, as it's almost always kind of the vibe I try to pull off when I play this kind of stuff - that is to say, the "is it techno or is it prog?" notion. Really tried hard to make sure everything pulled together pretty organically here, and the whole resurgence of percussion based techno with a lot of organic sounding instruments is absolutely the kind of stuff I love, so it's been nice to see so much of it come back lately.

Hope you enjoyed the rest of it, thanks for the listen

Posted by nefardec on May-20-2008 22:59:

just listened

my favorite mix from you so far

i particularly liked

07. Solumun - Woodstep (Original Mix) [Dessous]
08. Palm Skin Productions - Magnetic North (Solomun Mix) [Freerange]
09. 2000 and One - Funk That (Original Mix) [Intacto]
10. Karu - Maraud Your Ear (Tim Paris "Last night we almost lost Detroit" Mix / Rob Turner Training Wheels Edit) [Silver Network]

but the Karu was the standout track for me

i will leave more feedback after more listens

edit
agreed with the poster about the proggy sound. i think in general your mixes have always tended to go that direction. You always tend to play a little more dreamy or nostalgic or twinkly or something. (can't think of a good word atm)

and this is in no way a judgment statement, just an observation

edit 2
i still can't get over how much of a definite 'sound' you have always had, regardless of the style you're pushing at any moment. you always know it's rjt

Posted by RJT on May-20-2008 23:02:

The mix into the Karu tune might be the mix I'm most proud of in anything I've ever done. Glad you enjoyed it, Adam - hearing that it was your favorite from me definitely means a lot.

Damn it rob i just finished your other mix now this one. youre killing me....ok Im kidding, your mixes rock, Im downloading.

I officially have no space on my ipod, so something will get sacrificed to make room for this one.

Posted by spc on May-21-2008 04:31:

I started downloading it this morning a couple minutes before work and was angry i couldn't put it on my mp3 player in time before leaving sendspace 50 kb/s ftl

Anyway, finally got to listen to it at the gym on the treadmill... fucking fantastic mix. It's the first time in about a year I ran for at least an hour (hate running with a passion), and listened to the entire mix. I was sprinting on the treadmill with a giant musical boner. Carl Craig's remix as your opening track was spot-on for me and really got me in the mood. I wasn't really paying attention to the times when a song I really enjoyed was on because I was running, but there were some real epic win tracks on here. Once again, great work Probably one of your best mixes that I've listened to imo

I missed this earlier, but even if it were a judgment statement I'd be thrilled to be described as the "tinkly, nostalgic, dreamy" guy.

It's really nice to hear you say that you think I have a distinct style - because it's something that has always been of great concern to me, and something I haven't ever really had a ton of confidence in myself for doing well. I really don't care much about what my tracklists look like on paper, nor that I'm constantly digging just for the sake of digging (i.e. if I find something I like, I'll play it - I don't care so much about trying not to play "popular" producers or DJ's just for the sake of not playing them), but I also think the fact that I try to do that sometimes leaves me with doubts as to whether or not I'm just another bland face in a sea of thousands.

Comments like yours are very reassuring. Thanks again, Adam.

Legendary review boss - I always prefer to hear why/how/when it was that people listened to something and really enjoyed it than for them to necessarily critique it. I really appreciate you grabbing everything of mine that you have.

And I'm glad the C2/Art Bleek thing wasn't too jazzy an intro for everyone. Another big priority for this one was BPM range - the last few have probably changed about two to three BPM's total throughout their entirety. This one changes by 8, but I think even the early, low BPM stuff could be classified as "slow bangers."

Wicked set Rob, good work. The only track I didn't get into much was (I think) the second or third - With the African-type chanting?

Definitely be giving it a bunch more listens though
