Have you cheated in University? Do you think it's okay?

Inspired by another thread (and rather than carry the discussion in there)...Have you ever cheated on anything in university specifically? Do you think it's okay to cheat?

I will admit that I've cheated on a couple things in high school, but I quickly learned it was a stupid thing to do, and would never think of doing it in university. I may have done some dumb things in high school but I definitely proved my abilities to myself and to others in university, and have been quite successful.

Personally I think cheating is shameless and stupid. You end up not only cheating yourself, but ruining things for other people. As I said in the other thread....only people with no brains and no abilities cheat b/c they have to.

What do you guys think?

Posted by Sasha on May-20-2008 16:24:

never.

sooo not worth it!

Highschool... A LOT!
University never. I actually planned on cheating on a marketing exam last semester. And last minute decided I couldnt do it. I rather be able to wake up in the morning and feel good about who I am a person than cheat.

However lisa...

I actually disagree with this. People who cheat and dont get caught have to have some sort of intelligence. Some of the things they do in order to cheat are pretty smart.

I would never bash a person for cheating. Your grades are your business and its your life. I feel good about how I obtain my grades and that I deserve my B+ and the cheater will always have to know that he/she doesnt deserve the A

To tell you the truth I dont even know how to cheat.... unless you just talking about looking at the persons paper beside you or something

To be honest, I've proctored a number of exams and the teachers would tell me what I have to look out for...some of the stuff that people do to cheat is pretty crazy. But to think that if they spent that much time just to figure out how to cheat and get away with it....why not study?

I guess the proper thing to say would be what you did....and just that it's completely undeserving of a grade.

Actually I failed the class I cheated in, and had to repeat it. So yes, I got what I deserved

Posted by Chris Allen on May-20-2008 16:34:

I didn't cheat, but I circumvented a marking scheme from a lazy professor once.

Task was we had to design a website using certain tags and specific code.

I knew how the professor ran a basic "Ctrl-F" of the source code to find if you used the right code / tags, but I didn't want to design the site like he said.

So I essentially made a hidden website in the code with all the required information and made the site how I wanted. So when he was lazy and ran his little search, all the code showed up.

Not 'quite' cheating, but not exactly honest either.

You failed when you cheated? is that possible?

Usually i had to get answers wrong on purpose to make it look legit.

And how can a cheater with no abilities and brains, actually succeed at cheating when a distinguished scholar fails at cheating?

I failed b/c I got caught. I would have passed if I didn't. B/c I failed the exam, I failed the class.

My favorite part of this thread is how you're actually trying to use what I say to make me look stupid or something. Too bad you're failin' at that....maybe you should cheat

See, now that is how I see it, but I don't see what you did as cheating at all. If you were clever enough to figure out the triggers looked for, fooled them, and did it your way, I figure what's the harm.

I've cheated on assignments and things of that nature often enough, in the sense that code is copied ALL the time, but maybe that's just computers. I could not cheat on an English, or some other socio studies course. The rest of the subject matter, such as anything within mathematics and science, I learned that you can fool the system here and there, and I don't consider that cheating. You have whatever tools you can at your disposal. However, straight up copying when you have no idea what the subject matter actually is, is different.

Confucious say: Opportunity make an honest man a theif.

So back in first year Uni, a couple eons ago, I got somewhat busted for cheating on my Psych exam. Anyone who knows York University knows Curtis Lecture Hall L. About 500 seats and there were about 500 students in the class. So in other words every seat was full with no spacing as they normally do with exams. It was impossible to not look at near by students. Well I realized that the person in front of me knew their stuff and started copying their perfect answers. Well next thing I know the prof taps me on the shoulder and says "keep you eyes on your own paper". I was shitting bricks that something was going to happen when I handed in my exam. But no it was all good. But the scare was enough to never do anything like that again.

But really, if University is a training ground for the real world why not pick up a few good cheating skills. Don't think that the real world is all lovely dovey and people play with ethics. The truth is that you need to learn how to cut corners to get by.

Nice to see all us losers, who deserve to fail because of our lack of ability and brains, doing well.

In on class we were allowed to wear earphones at a low level ( i shit you not) during exams. the desks were very far apart, but we would make mp3's of definitions and listen to them while during the exam.

I actually never have cheated the conventional way of onlooking...mostly because i have eyes the size of grapefruit

Posted by nycionx on May-20-2008 17:02:

i did. alot this past semester.
my method was to go to the nearest washroom before test/exam started and hide important notes underneath the garbage bin. if i was lost during the exam i would simply go to the washroom, take notes, go into a stall, and so on.
also last last semester we had an exam that was first half openbook, second closed. so second part comes and im absolutely clueless! my notes are just on the chair next to me since i didnt put back in my bag. so i slide the notes under my shirt, then "go take a leak" , and so on.

i dont think i wanna do it anymore though, bcuz you know maybe i didnt get caught yet, but give 100 times and 1 time i might get caught. so fuk it probly, i got just 1 more year to finish

I'm amazed at the number of people who are PROUD of the fact that they cheat.

Maybe failing at cheating created a hate towards us cheaters

Posted by Orko on May-20-2008 17:14:

Life is a game, and people do what they need to, to get ahead. I have no control over other people's actions, so I do not concern myself with their morals. If they feel the need to 'cheat' to get ahead, then who am I to condemn them?

Cheating for marks is only really bad when a pass or fail is determined by the score of the group and not a nominal score of 50%. Example: if the top 40% get to 'pass' the course of exam, then cheating is really bad. If it is just to move you up from a B to an A, and nobody else is harmed, then what ever, you have to live with yourself.

Cheating on a test is like lying on your resume. Sure the grade or skills look good, and will get you noticed, but then you also have to live up to that expectation, and usually if you lack the skills, you will be found out quickly.

PS - I have not cheated in uni or college.

I see your point, but I still don't think it's something to be proud of. That was on an exam. In high school, I had cheated on other smaller tests etc. and never got caught...though I didn't blast it all over "hey guys, look I cheated!!" If you're gonna cheat, what's the point of telling everyone and being proud of it? Does it someone make you feel cooler?

Posted by LiANG on May-20-2008 17:21:

I'd rather fail a course with honor and take it again, than pass through cheating, having learnt nothing. Guess it all depends on what University means to you - a place to learn, or just to obtain a degree.

So you are a cheater, like us...

No one said they were proud...just sharing life experiences...and AA for cheaters...CA if you will
