If this happens again, just reformat your drive and re-install the OS. I have a legal copy of XP SP2. You can get one from your university or a friend.

the key to removing most viruses and spyware is using programs such as avg, spybot search and destroy, adaware, etc in safe mode. There are some nasty viruses that mess with vital system files especially explorer.exe but thats when you start asking for specific help.

Solution, get a girlfriend/boyfriend hahahaha

i would start with hijackthis remove all the startups and then work my way down from there.

good advice. my only complaint with it is that the typical user won't know what most of them do and they will spend the majority of their time trying to figure out what each one does and then reenabling them one by one and possibly reinfecting their computer. I would probably say dont worry about the startups since you'll be starting in safe mode and hopefully the antivirus will detect any suspicious/infected dll's and exe's. After running those scans then i would run hijack this and see whats left over. Personal preference I guess.

Be sure and save a copy of your registry though. It can delete some portions of your reg and some startup apps will not run properly.

seriously

I prefer a passive defense combined with an aggressive offense: NOD32 as the shield, and Spybot S&D if something manages to slip past. NOD32 runs politely in the background and updates itself daily without consuming process power, and Spybot gets run once a week.

I also never let anyone else touch my computer without me looming over them the entire time with a mace in my hand to punish an offender, so it's not like either program is getting overworked or anything.
