so freakin hard to make a song

this is not a rant thread or a newb thread.

what im saying is

i can get a melody, bass line, and drums down easily aswell as mixing ..but the problem is i dont know what to do with it afterwards as far as all of the effects and stuff that goes along with a typical edm track.

my question is how long did it take you to master all of the technical stuff?

Posted by Vortex_SA on May-21-2008 08:13:

i wouldnt say i mastered the technical stuff... as i think there always will be room for improvement, anyway, i guess after two or three yrs for me i made stuff that sounded not so terrible but currently im producing like 8 yrs already and i find myself focusing more on the theoretic stuff (what feeling do i want to get? i need to make stuff hover, stuff like that...), these days after learning every possible synthesis technique, i find myself making sounds within minutes, but fxs are the most problematic... you dont actually know what it should sound like, you know what feeling you want from it, and just fcking around with a synthesizer rarely does the job... so you need to think really hard and discover exactly what you want... and thats really difficult...

i also found out that when i take some time off wandering outside the studio and thinking bout my current project i find more ideas to put in there...

I find a mixture of the following will help advance your production -

Practicing new prod techniques (going through online guides for every part of producing Percs,Basslines etc..)

Experimenting for long times on each VST you have (only use a few VSTS first off)

Listening to the style of trance you want to produce for inspiration

Reading the forums on things you want to know about/ask questions about.

Generally playing around

In my experience, when you have the bass ready everything else comes together much faster.

the process comes with time and experience

Yeah, thats all really. Spend time, get experience.. the rest will come by itself.

I'm going on 8 years and my tracks still suck ....

Don't feel bad this is quite a common problem and one I hear often. All I can say is keep at it and when it gets frustrating, take a break and do something else for a while and then return when you are ready. What I like to do sometimes is build the skeleton of an entire track then work it out from there. Copy what you have completed for a good stretch and then play it out and start editing it live where you feel things should go or when your mind triggers something. I've come up with some cool things by complete accident by doing this. Good luck!

Any guides you can recommend for basslines, or percs?

If you think you have all of those things but it still doesn't sound like a "typical" EDM track, then you don't have all those things.

Lots of popular tracks out there don't have much in the way of effects.

Years upon years of practice and frustration.

Its just a reverse psychology comment, if he had said the opposite you would have said the opposite as well

theres another thread on here about completing tracks. I've commented there on this very subject. I've recently put together a track with bass percs a few melodies/leads etc but i got stuck on effects etc, which doesnt usually hold me back.

Although I'm aware its time and hard work that will help here I totally understand where lovehate is coming from.

I agree with what others have said about taking a break. Ive done just that and ditched the track in question, for now and will try a new track out, ill go back to that track another time. Sometimes I find you get writers block, so to speak.

Since I started though ive had less of these stumbling blocks so its true just keep at it and you'll get over these hurdles, thats what I intend on doing.

Agree completely.

If you have a decent track on your hands, it will sound pretty good without any effects.

The effects are just the final phase of composition that will kick your track up a notch and give it that extra polish.

totally, one good effect can make up for 10 not so good ones.

I have been in a lull for the last year. I seem to come out okay with about a 16 measure short of the highlight of the song, but then it just dies from there. I cannot seem to get it all together into a song.

I have recently found inspiration watching videos while I try to compose something. I have a video playing (with no sound of course) of some game play that I captured using FRAPS. I import that into my project and compose while watching the video. I find it adds some inspiration for me as it adds somewhat of a story or theme for the music. I have done this on my most recent endeavor, and I think I might actually finish the song.

I imagine huge epic scenes from movies would be good inspiration for the break in the song and fast game play or racing/military airplane videos, etc would be good for the rest - for me anyway....

I'll look anywhere for inspiration...

Regards,
Adam
