REVIEW : DEMF '08 (Movement Detroit)
It's 4:30am... just got home from a epic day of DEMF...missed out on Sat and Sun because of shit, but managed to hit up Monday...
Got there at 4pm, checked out the Redbull tent, Databass ghettotek showcase, insane.. .good way to get into the groove... 3DJs from Belgium battleing it out on 6 decks with crazy ghettotek/booty beats was really intresting to watch and hear...
Beatport stage for Lee Burridge, nice...
Strolled around, watched the scenes and people...
Checked out some of Dieslboy, what a party in the Pioneer tent...
Cobblestone Jazz was very nice, but the sound was not clear because it was overpowered with the sounds of Dieslboy's party...
Josh Wink was amazing, incredible set...30mins late, but played 30mins later... Rain came in almost on cue as he wrapped it up and Dubfire took over and banged out a incredibly hard and sketchy set, and it was surprisingly very very enjoyable, the energy as the night fell and the people in that tent was intense. Hearing Grindhouse live on that system was crazy! Ohh the guy OD'ing and falling ass backwards and convulsing was a damper to the party, but the medics came and sorted him out and he appeared to be ok soon after (I hope)
Dubfire closed it up with an encore of Strings Of Life which was bliss...
Hauled ass over to the Vitamin Water main stage to see Speedy J just tear the shit out of Hart Plaza with the closing set, the visual on the giant widescreen were crazy, the tracks he played/made/performed were batshit insane and perfect to close that mutha up...
Weather was nice, kinda hot for me, but that's my fault for not wearing shorts, the sun was lovely but warmed the insanely priced beer up too soon... as mentioned above, the brief rainshower at 9:30 as Wink finished up and Dubfire started was welcomed and made for the night more memorable, people ran inside the tent, then the others ran out and embraced the rain, it was awesome.
Against better judgement (Having been up for 2 days straight and work in the am) went to the Works after for Dan Bell's afterparty which was crazy and infact helped out cuz it let me get everything from the day out of my system with some good techno/house LOUD and BASSY!
Shitty videos from my phone to come in the morning hopefully...
And maybe if I remember anything else...more review...
6:30 AM - Wake up and hour and a half before alarm is set for, owww, urghhh, this is not good, my mouth is burnt to shit, my legs keep cramping up from dancing, feels like someone punched me in the jaw, my stomach feels warm as I breath... ohh this is not good... the simplest things seem excessivly difficult right now
7:30 AM - ****** dat shit, make the rational decision to call in sick...you'd have to be batshit insane crazy to go work this morning.
So more review, what I forgot. Zabiela'a afterparty @ Boom Boom on Sunday was amazing, some say they didn't like his set, I thought it was spectacular. Watching that guy work his skills on the CDJs, EFXs and Mixers is truly a awesome sight. Scratching as I first walked in, jaw dropped at the sounds and the frequency and placement of the precise scratches enhance the track playing. Some great tunes played too, apparently his set was very similar to his at DEMF in the Pioneer tent early that evening.
Taken with a camera phone, hence shitty res and sound... but better than nothing until more things pop up on youtube...
Josh Wink - Beatport
Dubfire - Beatport
Dubfire - Beatport (Encore, Derrick May - Strings Of Life)
Speedy J Closing
dude, get some sleep haha
My expectations after last year were too high - none of the sets really wowed me except for Cobblestone Jazz on Monday. Richie was a snooze compared to what happened last year. Weather was better though. $200/nt hotel next to the fest had a strict no alcohol policy - wtf.
After parties - both the ferrer party @ Shelter and Old Miami were excellent. Tronic party (upstairs from Shelter) had no vibe whatsoever.

This was my first DEMF..... Let me just say I was really impressed with the event. The mainstage had the most massive sound I have ever heard.
Basically I got to DEMF around noon Saturday and did not leave until 12 am this morning.
I may write a better review once I get some sleep. I had to be up for work at 6 am this morning.
Anybody know what the last track Hawtin played at both the Minus party and at the Beatport stage ? it's a fast paced "grinding" song and then he finsihes it off with a sweeping instrumental (no beat) that slows down to an end. It was about the same both nights.
it was our first DEMF and we had good time. Will likely go back next year. We can't compare it to previous years but we liked the set up at Hart plaza and the sound was excellent compared to most festivals around the US. Plus where else are you going to get that much techno in the US ?

Yeah, the city was pretty crazy with hockey games 2 of the 3 nights of the festival.
It's such an incredibly well produced event, when I think about it. The sound at the main stage is mind boggling. It must be such a thrill playing there. The cobblestone jazz set was just amazing on such a big system (even though I was too dead to dance anymore). The DJ slots always happen as they are published in the schedule, the police presence isn't overbearing at all, the vendors are nice (and god knows I wouldn't be by the third day of dealing with DEMF patrons) and considering the talent, the sound, and the scale of the whole thing, it's very reasonably priced.

lol the announcers from ESPN were complaining about the noise. Barry Melrose said the music woke him up hahaha
carl craig's live set on sunday was fantastic, although i could have done without the saxaphone being played over almost ever track.
Lee burridge's set was pretty wicked & it was neat too see he was playing alot of vinyl.
Josh wink's set was good as well. I love acid.
Dubfire stole the show for me. That shit was so fucking twisted. Everyone was going mental!
Went down to support the Junkies/Jonny White + Nitin and snuck out to see Louie Vega for $5!!!! Goodtimes!
I was there for Zabiela on Sunday at Boom Boom Room. A great way to start of "my weekend" haha. Went to DEMF which has changed over the years. Much more organized and the line up was more international. Although i do miss the emphasis they used to put on detroit, chicago, and new york artists. Highlights for me were Speedy J, Josh Wink and the encore performance of dubfire when he played strings of life. A perfect tribute to Detroit and it's techno history!
Its pretty cool that there is a festival of this magnitude in such an urban setting. The police were present but not overbearing. And they even THANKED(!!!!) the mayor and city council for their cooperation at the end of the show! I wish we could bring miller and city council to detroit next year to show them how to fix toronto's tourism problem!
All in all a great time and next year im definately hitting up the whole weekend there!
I Love My DEMF Life 2008
A big ass review will only take away from how fucking truly awesome this whole weekend was. Everything was just so on point.
<3 DEMF
I can't wait for next year again... so good.
I still can't get over how perfect the weather and beats were for an amazing day, brought along some DEMF virgins, and it was great to see them start the day looking around at the ravers, hippies, weirdos, stand to the back of the tents... then 6 hours later, jumping around outside of a tent going crazy to dubfire and fist pumping to speedy J...
