Ever can't figure out what your true style is?
Being a dj is a hard job. We're all englufed with different types of genres to choose from. I personally never know what I want to do. I love progressive...but then again I love trance. Then I love hard trance and want to spin it. Every now and then I wouldn't mind spinning house. It drives me nuts!! Does anybody else have this problem?
umm...i really dont consider it a problem...i mainly spin house...but i also buy trance and techno records...i mix them into my sets
for me...i spin what i like...meaning if i want to put this track in a mix.....ill do it..
i dont think you should hold yourself back just because something is of a different genre
experiment
yeah..i even spin some new age stuff
like James Newton Howard- Unbreakable....i'll usually start a set with something new age because it makes people listen and say, "That's interesting."
I love trance. I like spinning house sometimes. I love prog when I listen to others spin it and want to slot in a few prog ones in my set. I haev a soft spot for chillout. I hear Techno records and I go crazy.
Who's got a problem here
it's a pretty normal situation. You will also notice that your style changes over the years. I never realised this during the changing but when I listen to my sets from '98 it sounds like PvD on speed and the newer ones are more like Scot Project / Dean. This also depends on the kind of music that's being released and also what's being played in the clubs.
i got the problem at the moment
i spin epic/upliftin/hard and prog
how would I fit the above genres into a 1 hour set?
i tend to change styles every so often, i only spin trance.. but sometimes its nice epic trance.. then later on i go to a really good event and get into harder trance or progressive..
i love pretty much all forms of trance, but i mainly spin more epic than anything else
I bought around 30 records of different styles before I decided on what style i wanted to spin, then i bought around 30 more of that style and realized I wanted to spin another style. So now I have around 60 records that I never want to spin again. I'm going to be selling a bunch of them later if anybody wants a list PM me. But basically it took me around 4 months before I figured out what exact style I wanted to spin. I wanted to be different and not spin what everybody else spins, I didn't want to be a copy of PVD, Tiesto, Oakenfold or anybody too mainstream. It all depends on what you're DJing for. I know that they only way I'll gain popularity where I am is by spinning music that not many DJ's in this area spin, and doing a job at it too. If you spin a certain style that you don't hear in the clubs around you some people'll think you suck because you don't spin what they want, but the smart peopel will realize that you brought something new in the area and they'll be hiring you more. (at least that's what i hope

Also I don't spin only one "genre" of music. I just picked a "style" if you get what i'm saying. In other words I'll go from Progressive to Trance to Hard Trance to Tech-Trance to Hard Techno in one set but I'll keep it in my "style", which goes across a lot of genres. Sometimes you can find a good progressive tune that'll go with an acid techno tune or something, PVD did this at rosemantages rave, Junk Project to Trancesetters (Acid Techno to Progressive), but he still kept his style if you know what im' saying.
you guys are ok. im mean, prog, trance, nrg, house can be mixed together well, and can sound good in a set.
my problem is drum n bass. im fucking addicted to it. i have mainly house records at the moment, but ive been saving up for a while and am ready to spend a bunch of $ on new vinyl. but im stuck between buying drum n bass or trance. i guess i could go half n half but...

i call my style hard house with a trancy twist
as was said... i have a style, i don't stick to just one genre
i'm actually thinking about incorporating breaks into my sets now...
just spin what makes you feel good, don't try to please everyone, please yourself first, then try to please everyone
when you finish a set with a smile on your face, then you're doing something right

just started learning to mix, but i'd love to see myself spinning breakbeat trance (a la Hybrid) and tech-trance (a la Starecase), even though i'm practicing with progressive and uplifting trance at the moment.
this weird thing happened when i first started spinning. ive been a trance luver for a looonggg time, so i assumed i was gonna spin it too. first time i went out rekkid shopping i bought 14 trance classics, songs that ive been loving for along time. but when i started spinning them and mixing, i was completely and utterly bored out of my mind. i was so depressed.
now i spin hard house and hard trance, and i love it. can't get enough of it. i dunno, kinda pissedoff cause i have like 15 new trance rekkids that are basically unused.
