The ban-wagon rolls on... plastic bags, phones, electronics yet to be invented!
Ontario should seriously just print out a list of what we CAN do as it would be much shorter.
Currently being banned:
-Cigarette displays in stores banned....i saw cig billboards when i was a kid and i dont smoke! Also, this is exactly how the liquor stores used to operate until the 60s and people still bought a lot of booze didnt they?
-Smoking in cars with kids (my parents did this and i grew up fine!)
-Plastic bags at the liquor store. I guess theyd rather kill a tonne of trees with paper rather than use recyclable plastic bags. FYI paper bags get an average of 1 use while plastic bags get reused 2 to four times.
Strongly being considered (Which with Mcguinty means it will definately happen):
- cell phones in cars. Mcguinty said he wasnt interested in this type of ban a few months ago. Where have i heard that before? Oh yes he said the same thing about smoking in cars and police airplanes. Most Toronto drivers suck regardless of whether or not they are on a phone. In fact most of the douchbags i pass who are doing 80 in the left lane are by themselves and spaced out in their own little world.
- Electronic devices - This must be a world first. Not only are they going to ban blackberrys, MP3 players, and i wouldnt be surprised if radios and CD players are in there. But they are going to ban devices NOT EVEN INVENTED YET Only Mcguinty and his commie liberals could think of that one!!! I cant wait for the flood of douche bags that park on the side of highways to take a call which is probably 1000 times more dangerous than talking while driving.
- plastic bags in all retail stores. Again, cant wait for the mess of paper bags that tear and shred before you even make it to the car. Cant wait for the chemically treated paper bags to get thrown out instead of resued. Makes for great showboating politics but not very practical.
- Plastic water bottles. Many school boards are already banning them (after banning pop) and now the province might do the same. I guess they want us to drink from the lead coated pipes in schools and parks. If i were in the business id have a few solutions.
1) define what is water. Water is H20. As soon as you add calcium, iron, etc its no longer water is it? Otherwise wed have to call juice, pop and anything else liquid as water right? Id just change the label from water to "Calcium drink"
2) Canned Water - worse for the environment as you have to mine materials and smelter the can but hey, at least its not plastic water bottles!!
Good old canada. We have a lot of real problems such as lost jobs, genuinely poor people, and health care but the government is too busy micromanaging adults. Who voted for the Liberals? Wasnt me!

You remind me of Lisa Simpson.
BTW speaking of electronics, the liberals are secretly passing a new tax on electronics that will increase the average cost of a computer by 30-40 dollars. I think cameras will cost $15 more. Apparently this is to cover disposal. BTW most items can be disposed of for free privately as there are valuable metals and minerals such as cadium, gold, platinum, silica, and aluminum that can be stripped and sold for a decent price. But dont let the facts get in the way of a new tax for mcguinty, er sorry i mean "surcharge".
I've got so many issues with this post that I don't even know where to begin.
I guess I'll start with water. Pure water (i.e. 100% H20) is not easy to find. Should we stop calling the water in lakes etc. 'water'?
Although I agree that BPA is not a particularily dangerous substance, I don't think you can fault the Ontario government for a recommondation made by Health Canada.
I also think you have missed the point on the paper bag issue. The LCBO's current bags use much more plastic than most (read 'all') other retail paper bags. The issue here is to drive consumers into reusable cloth type bags, rather than single use paper. And in any event, its not so much of a 'ban' by the government as much as it is a change in one small policy.
What is your point with electronic devices? They're not going to outright ban balckberrys, mp3 players etc. Are you talking about in cars?

I disagree. And just like you, I don't have to provide any evidence for why I think I'm right. I just am. ![]() |

| Originally posted by Jayx1 so as an adult consumer im being forced to comply with someone's idea of conservation? It would be fine for the liquor store to do this IF THEY WERENT A MONOPOLY Also, forcing regulation onto private entities? If the consumer doesnt want plastic they will stop providing it. Until then, lets have a choice. |

| Originally posted by Abercrombie I agree with a lot of your points Jay, government's hand-holding and parenting me pisses me off too, but I have to step into this one. This recycling fee for computers already exists in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, and will become Canada-wide, it's a fait accompli. Nova Scotia will add cellphones and scanners to the program in 2009, and it's only going to widen in the spectrum of electronics types with time. |

Regardless, electronics prices have been steadily falling in the last few years. A $40 increase is not going to have much effect in the general cheapening of electronics. You just won't notice how fast desktops are going down in price as much, that's all.

I just hand my cheque over to my MP and tell them if there is anything left to donate it to the Human Fund

I dunno about Toronto but here in Oakville, we got this new green bin (with a lock on the top) for all food waste.. I find this to be the next step in recycling... There should actually be like 4 to 5 bins with different colours.. one for metal(cans), plastic(bottles), food waste, and anything hazardous (such as electronics)

| Originally posted by INTRANCE On this note I agree with Jay, tap water is garbage, a lot of research supports that fluoride in tap water can cause cancer, thyroid problems and various other things. Plus the smell is revolting, i live in downtown London and the smell of all the chemicals in the water makes it gross to drink, and i don't want to think about what's in the old pipes the water goes through. http://www.cambridgenow.ca/npps/story.cfm?id=1067 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/serv...eandHealth/home http://www.holisticmed.com/fluoride/ As for the Electronics "recycling fee", it's already implemented in BC, Alberta, and Nova Scotia so it's just a matter of time before it's everywhere. |
