Anyone watch the Mixed Martial Arts/Elite XC.......

.......tonight from Newark? I know some of you are fans sooooo......

My observations:

wtf, two blown calls, two stopped matches that should have continued, a lotta dissapointed fans.........

Great night of fights, but def a little bittersweet by the called matches.

Kimbo Slice is obviously a beast on the street, but may have met his match in MMA. If that dude learns some MMA skills, he will be the scariest man alive.

^^btw ooowwwww to the Brit that got his califlowered ear popped open!! and LOL at the swing he took at the ref for calling the fight. That Brit looked mentally insane and I wouldnt have even walked on the same side of the street as him, let alone get in a ring.

Best moment of the night: my girl Gina handin Minnesota girl a can of whoop-ass! holy shit, the girl she went against was STACKED, but she dominated. Seemed like the other girl was all muscle with no fight or skill.

Discuss.

some of the fights were entertaining, but overall I was just very frustrated by the broadcast.

I'm not sure if Elite XC made this clear or not before the fight, but James Thomspon (the Brit) is considered to have one of the worst chins in MMA...i.e. he was a tailor-made guy for Kimbo to fight, and he wound up dominating him a lot of the fight. That was a horrendous call on the refs part as well. A busted ear is a busted ear, he was fine to continue.

My main gripe with that fight is the fact that it wasn't called earlier in Thompson's favor. Kimbo took about 25 unanswered elbows and punches at the end of round 2. If i was the ref, i would have called it then.

Kimbo looked pretty bad though. Too bad we'll never get to see him put in against a legit heavyweight.

Posted by Zack Roth on Jun-01-2008 06:14:

on the topic of Gina...

don't get me wrong....she is a legit fighter, and cute as hell. I like her a lot. But wtf! she came in 5 pounds overweight and no one really said anything about it? Thats disgraceful.

Travis Lutter (winner of The Ultimate Figher last year) comes in a half pound overweight for his title fight with Anderson Silva last year and the guy gets crucified. Gina needs to take some heat for this.

lol people actually watch this shit? any real mma fighter worth anything at all could take kimbo down (provided they were in the same weight class). he's just a dumb old gorilla.

let him face someone like wanderlei silva so he could have his ass handed to him and end his youtube driven career

I actually think there are lightweight guys who could submit him pretty handily.

Kimbo is a streetfighter, period. Anyone with a well-rounded game will give him serious problems. James Thompson is about the LEAST well-rounded fighter out there, and he took it to Kimbo.

for any new MMA fans...check out this highlight video...Fedor, the best fighter in the world right now. I honestly can't even fathom how badly he would fuck Kimbo up.

That's riiiiiiight boooooooooooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeee

My boy Kimbo SLICE representing the 3-0-5!

I came home just in time to watch him fight. He throws serious punches. Sucks on the floor.

If he would have been brought down ONE MORE TIME he could have lost.

But he won.. So fuk that.

wooooooooooooooooooooooooot KIMBO "you gonna get raped" SLICE

tell me he doesn't look like him!?

Kimbo is a joke. He better start investing his money so he doesn't have to live out of his pathfinder again when his career is over in a year.

Elite XC is fishy! Not 2 but 3 controversial calls...

First of all why the hell did that girl take the fight with an opponent 4 1/2 pounds overweight? Total bull. I really like Gina Carano but she looked horrible in this fight imo. Yes she definitely did some serious damage to that girls face but she was overweight and sluggish throughout the fight! She must just have some heavy hands! I am glad to see that she was trying to finish the other girl with a submission but had the positioning all wrong.

Best fight of the night was smith v. lawler too bad is was wrongly stopped, I was really hoping that smith would snatch that win!

Agreed with everything you said. I was seriously a little pissy about the way Elite handled a lot of things. Blown calls, ignoring weight-classes, and even the announcers ("Gina, wasnt this your easiest fight to date??" who ASKS that?? Even Gona looked flustered and uncomfortable answering that, its not professional!!)

And you are right, Kimbo had some good strikes in, and is obviously very powerful. The Brit looked wobbley after one hit. lol.....But if Kimbo gets in the ring with a solid MMA guy, he will be crushed. we all saw Kimbo collapse to the floor and not get up even after the fight was called. He wasnt hit as hard, but anyone who takes 100 elbow shots to the head isnt going to feel very good. I DO like how he was humbled over the fight and admits that he needs work. There is nothing more that I hate than some cocky ass dude that doesnt have the right to be cocky. I am interested to see what this guy can do after some training in other areas. He is older, though and his age will be a factor in if he ever becomes a serious competitor.

I prefer boxing to MMA

Having said that, I caught this match while randomly flipping channels and saw Kimbo lucking out. Surprised he didn't go after his ear in the 1st round.

Posted by Piet on Jun-01-2008 23:18:

i watch mainly only the ufc but i did catch the Kimbo fight.

was entertaining, but wasn't blown away by either fighters skills. I think even though Kimbo might not have the best well rounded skills, his strength makes up for many of his shortcomings, i can't discount him, he is dangerous to even more well known guys because of this.

When they showed Thompson in slow motion taking those killer shots just before the ref stopped the fight it was pretty amazing - you could even see his eyes staying still while his whole head got spun around multiple times and then to top it off his ear popped, brutal stuff, amazing that Thompson was still standing too.

If you're going to watch MMA it's best to just stick with the UFC in my opinion. I watched the recent Elite XC event and I just wasn't excited about any of the fights. It just felt like I was watching all the fighters who either can't get into or who have been kicked out of the UFC.

The Kimbo fight had me intrigued but I don't know, I wasn't overly excited. He seemed pretty amature as well. However, you have to give the guy credit for making a name for himself and for putting as much work into his MMA career as he does.

I felt like I was watching a wrestling event instead of MMA on Saturday night with the stupid flashy intros and fireworks. Spent way too much time doing nothing between fights.

Who's Kimbo Slice?

WEC on the other hand, both title fights were incredibly entertaining.
Torres/Maeda was a fun one, shame it had to end with the swollen eye.
Faber deserved the win, Pulver had a few opportunities that I think he could have followed up on that he didn't. Still can't believe he stood standing throughout that onslaught from Faber.

I won't be buying 85 next weekend, but I'm definitely going out to watch it.

Totallllly agree. I'm a fan of Gina, always delivers an entertaining fight, but boy was that bullshit they didn't pounce on her about that. Sounds like she'll be stopping American Gladiators now so she can dedicate the proper amount of time to training.

Areed that Elite XC has some work to do. I wasnt very impressed with the way they handled a lot of things. UFC still has the best fighters on TV right now, and the KIMBO idea was a joke. He has a big name, and marketing-wise, it was a decent choice. But to say that he is a MMA is amusing to say the least.

The UFC is the premier organization right now, but there are some other great ones out there...

Check out 'Dream' out of Japan (formerly Pride), as well as the newly formed "Affliction." Affliction's first card is on July 19th...they have an amazing roster so far, including Fedor, the most dominant guy in MMA right now.

I definitely don't agree with that. Gina is much more well known right now then Travis was back then. She is a bigger embassador of the sport. She is hot, but she needs to bust her ass like everyone else and make weight. And Lutter came in like a half pound over when all was said and done. Gina was 5 pounds over... Thats just disrespectful.

well doesn't she have to be heavier for the gladiators. it must be hard to gain weight and then lose it

i dunno... but we agress she is surely hot!!

thats her decision though, if she wants to be an American Gladiator and gain weight. And male MMA guys are known to cut as much as 15 pounds in a 24 hour period to make weight. If Gina wants to be part of (generally speaking) a man's sport, she needs to suck it up and put in the work that the guys do.

but yes, she is hot....

I think he meant she didn't take losing the weight seriously, she didn't give a shit giving up some of her purse to the competitor for being overweight. I could be wrong but I think the opponent can decide whether or not they want to take the fight with someone who hasn't made weight.

she had to forfeit a % of her purse to the girl she fought. Technically the girl she fought could have refused the fight, but there was no way she'd do that, simply because she was given the oppurtunity to fight on CBS against the biggest female fighter in the world. If she refused the fight, chances are she wouldn't get another chance at Gina.

By disrespectful, I just mean to say that Gina didn't take the fight that seriously. She is the biggest name in female MMA right now (not the best though.) Coming in 5 pounds overweight is kind of a slap in the face to people that take MMA seriously imo.

Posted by DOOMBOT on Jun-02-2008 20:55:

I'm still finding it difficult to see how anyone can take Kimbo seriously. He's a marketing gimic. Anyone with legitimate MMA skills can and will beat him.

A ref calling the fight on a busted ear is pretty ridiculous, by the way. A shame that a fight can be decided that way, but it happens.

Posted by DOOMBOT on Jun-02-2008 20:57:

When a fight is taken to the ground you can definitely feel 5 pounds.

Early Tyson? No. Early Tyson vs Kimbo would be a 3 second fight.

Kimbo has a ton to learn and it's obvious until he gets to that point, if he ever does, that he is going to be given matches that he can win. Apparently he barely even did that with this last one. Like already said, throw him in there with one of the legitimate UFC fighters and it's going to be a very quick one.

That's another thing that kind of annoys me though. I have wrestled and done a little martial arts and it's basicaly a slap in peoples faces who do that to see a joke like this guy make it big and become famous and on top of that, represent the sport.
