Review: Christopher Lawrence @ Guv

I have alot of mixed reactions about the night, but unfortunately the bad over took the good. After arriving with hardcore trancer around 11:45, it seemed like all the attention would be in the drink/skybar in terms of traffic, but who really shows up at guv that early? I can really see how evident the effect of the Z103 crowd is, similar halloween vibe with many drunks and even more idiots.

By 1:40, CL came on after MO did a more than ok job of warming up. I wasn't really disappointed by his set, but it definetely could have used a tad bit of better flow. Some tracks that I noticed:

Nyquist-Ghostrider
Zen Mechanics-Off the grid
John 00 Fleming-Rasa Lila (Jay Selway Remix)
Alien Project-Deeper
Ekstastis Project-Stormy Weather
Ben Gold-Ten 4

He played for just over 2 hours... yeah that's right, just over two hours. Who the hell thinks of this shit? It's not like he's an opening act for some other bigger name DJ, he's the headliner. I don't know what kind of circumstance there could have been for this but I find it very, very annoying have it turn out that way. 6.5/10... pretty disappointed.

On a side note, I just want to give a big thank you to the guvernment. You always manage to pack every room to the point that breathing is a privilege and are home to the worst soundsystem in the country. Congrats and good luck on the DJ Mag Best Club List as well as Tony Monaco's hair gel beach parties.

Cheers

he always spin s a 2-3 hrs set, I don't see the problem really?!

Posted by SPANIARD on Jun-01-2008 14:43:

Like I said, if there was a circumstance that would prevent him from going longer, that's fine by me. I just think that having him there for only that amount of time is a waste. Does Mark Oliver REAAAAAAAAAAALLY need to take up that 1 or 1/half hours that could be going to CL? That's my point.

Posted by jon jon on Jun-01-2008 14:57:

I don't have a clue about last night, but 9/10 it's the DJ who wants xx certain amount of time. You'd be surprised to know that a lot of headliner DJ's don't like playing over 2 hours...

(again, I don't know if this is the case here)

Yeah I wanted to come out last night, but got pretty bad food poisoning

I couldnt get into CL's set at all...just not my cup of tea nowadays I guess. Once I ventured into the Gallery there was no turning back...amazing set by Deko-ze and then by Greg Gow. Loved hearing Danny Tenaglia's 'The Space Dance' on the Gallery sound system...awesome track.

for me, the set time wasn't really an issue, i agree it was short, and wish it went on longer, but for the time Chris was on...

HE LAYED DOWN A BANGER OF A SET!!!!

I could not stop moving !!! For me, Chris always brings something different to the table that other DJ's don't, he plays such a different, unique style. Plus, he has a great vibe behind the decks, and he's an awesome dude, since i got to chat with him for a couple minutes after his set.

Totally understandable! It would be tough to be on top of your game for an extended period of time; it would be physically/mental tiring, plus they would have a harder time picking good songs to play.

I would rather hear 4 DJs give it their all for 2 hours each rather than 1 dragging out an 8 hour set. However, there are a decent amount of DJs that can keep you interested for an extended period of time.

Although I do like listening to extended techno sets thats for sure, especially Chris Liebling sets at FW!

Posted by electro88 on Jun-01-2008 18:21:

ahhhh he played Stormy Weather after I requested it! I also heard Sean Tyas & Talla 2XLC - Heart To Heart /endclublifeforawhile

Posted by mnemonic. on Jun-01-2008 19:14:

p.s. to add to my review, mark's opening set was decent til he played that new god awful AvB track "going wrong", i wanted to stick a steel punch in my jugular when i heard that.

How I wish Guv had a much better sound system,I moved around the club like 10 times to find the best spot, and everywhere I went there was something missing, the only place(sadly)that you can hear things with much better was the smoking patio. I hope the next mutli million renovation next time will include a brand new sound system with some proper tweaking.

I must say MO played some of the best tunes he ever played imo. Minus Going wrong lol.. There was a point where he played like Rank 1 - And Then (super 8 remix), then I think he played 6am, then First State - Falling. AAnd couple other wicked tunes. The problem there was he played Going Wrong right in between..lol hate that track but funny the reaction it brings cause the whole club was loving it.. lol.. lots of stupid hype around that track.
The best tune for few of us was Rank 1 - And then (super 8 remix), first time since WMC hearing it live and heard TWICE from both MO and Chris Lawrence. I was disappointed that Chris Lawrence only played 2 hrs.. that sucked big time. But give MO thumbs up for openning set, that was some of the best I ever heard from him. The closing set by him was OK. All in all FUN night!

i'll make this short and sweet...just like the set.

mark opening was meh. didn't get me moving at all.

CL's set was quite good but too short. he could've gone another 30-45min easily instead of ending at 3:40.

the sound was pretty bad. even in the spot where it's usuall good.

there was a bit more "wierdness" than usual for me at least. and it wasn't even sketchyness, it was just wierd.

but all in all, it was a free event so i can't really complain. i defintely would've been a lot more pissed off if i paid to get in.

good seeing ben, navid, chris, mikey (thanks again for the ride man), sagar (nice meeting you), and pavel.

There is no sweet spot at the guv, sound is shit everywhere.

I ended up checking this event out last night, certainly not for CL tho!

For the majority of the time i was at the Sky Bar which was happenin'. Lotsa people enjoying themselves and not too rammed. Manzone&Strong layed down some solid tracks, i was feeling it. Had a great time for sure, the guv complex was goin off last night, vibe seemed better than usual, but i was with a great crew. All in all great night out.

Sorry to say, but what a dumb argument!
These guys are professionals!!! I'm not being paid thousands of dollars and by no means on a professional level that CL is at, but EVERY gig demands being on the top of your game and having plenty of quality music!! As Jon Jon said, DJ's usually dictate how long they can/want to play for, and they get paid more the longer they play (usually). But saying it's tough to be on top of your game for extended periods of time, PLUS, having a hard time finding good tracks would indicate that a DJ is NOT a professional at all!

Anyway, I think Mark Oliver did a pretty good job warming up! Nice to see him get away from his typical boring house, and not hear tracks he's played out for the past 3 years, was very refreshing! But I agree with Ben saying that his flow did need a lot of work. I was only there til 2:15 so I can't really comment on CL's set, besides he started off bangin and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I was with a first time Guver and CL isn't exactly the best night to bring a nOOb out

Jon Jon said that most DJs prefer to play shorter sets.... and I said that this is because 'It would be tough to be on top of your game for an extended period of time; it would be physically/mental tiring, plus they would have a harder time picking good songs to play.'

I didnt say that someone such as CL wouldnt be fully capable of playing a good extended set, obviously it just takes a lot more effort on the DJs part and therefore they would prefer to play a shorter set.

I never said they should play shorter sets.

I had a GREAT time last night! Starting out the night was MO, who in my opinion did a great warm up. He started out slow with Tiesto + Imogin Heap - Hide and Seek, had the cheese going wrong, and then went down dirty and sick trance resulting in a great lead in to CL. When CL was on, i really enjoyed his set. I intended on being in the gallery at first (hung around for alexsandra for awhile, then some song came on with a trumpet and i bounced) but he had me hooked for 1.5 hours, then i went in and enjoyed dekoze's set BIG TIME! and Greag Gow did excellent, dropping SVD - Pura Vida SIIICCKK!! Then back in for MO till closing. In my mind stole the show, amazing closing set, from classic CLASSIC trance, some songs i havnt heard for years (iain put up vids ) to crazy beats, be - laid back luke, and two others. one of which was his encore song. OH and he played Exctacy!!! soo siiiicckk

the crowd i have mixed reactions. At the start of the night a shooter girl is asking us if we wanted a shot and this guy bumps into her, stares at her right up in her face and doesnt move! she then gets out of his way and he storms right by! rude ass fcuk! but then later the vibe was excellent and pretty packed until well past 5!!! 6ish before it got down to the closing crew

a couple songs to id but ive been up all day with only a 3 hour nap, and after closing guv, walking ALL THE WAY up jarvis and west down college to CZ was a BITCH (to a friends house 1 block down...)then subwayed + bused home..gahh
