Question My Experince @ Walmart regarding the iTouch ver 2

John
Hello, I was wondering if I can ask you a few question regarding the iTouch ver 2, it states its now GPS enabled. How does that work, is it through satellites or data? Since its not a phone, how can it transfer Data?

(Dude goes away and comes back)

Dude
You must be in a Wifi Area for the GPS to work.

John
Youre telling me, if Im lost and I need to get from point A to B, I must be in a WiFi area?

Dude
Yes

John
What if the WiFi area Im in ends in 2 feet? How do I get to point B then?

Dude
I have no idea; your signal will be lost.

That doesnt make any sense at all to me.

The question is, the iPhone ver 2, its GPS enabled also I have a strong feeling it will be using Internet Data also.

It'll require a 3G connection but will have a real GPS receiver, not some clusterfuck cell-tower triangulation system that'll approximate your position with piss-poor accuracy.

They'll never equip the phone with the maps in memory. They will come down via HSPA for sure.

That's what I'm wondering ... The BlackBerry's also have GPS, but it has to use Data to run it. It's not a real GPS receiver built in ... b/c it uses TeleNav.

it does have a proper gps receiver because you can buy garmin maps for the blackberry for $100 and it doesnt use data.

yes i see, it's the whole TeleNav BS they are pulling ... pay monthly price plus Data when you don;t need it.

From what I gather on Telenav's site, you either have to have a phone with a GPS receiver built in, or you have to use a Bluetooth GPS receiver. It merely pulls down the map data (the tiles) from the mobile provider's data network... I think.
