toronto hates breaks??

what the hell happened??? 2006 and 2007 were all about breaks, so many gigs to choose from at the same night, mind you. and now...... we have mixed bag weekly, farbs throws down some sick make it funky parties once in a while and activate brings bigass name to footwork every... fuck what is it?? 4-5-6 months??

they took away orange room and then the gallery. like theres no space for one small breaks room in the guv??? pft. here's an idea, play some more trance you money grabbing bastards !!

i really dont get it. back to the underground?? im fine with that but its such a shame.

bring back evil motherfucking nine
bring back freq nasty (to a club, not on a fucking field)
bring back adam freeland
do whatever necessary and bring us plump dj's, theres gotta be a way
bring back rennie pilgrem
bring back.... shit, anybody!!

i blame electro for this bullshit.

I agree with you whole-heartedly.
We need more breaks. There can never be enough breaks.

honestly, theres barely any breaks at the moment. if there wasnt for mixed bag you'd have to wait at least 2 months to get your fix.

i dont understand why dont they give us back the orange room? it was always rammed to the tits and we drink a lot. and i mean a lot. what else do they fucking need?

Rumour has it both Evil Nine and Adam Freeland will be back this summer, and Stanton Warriors. This particular rumour being from the breaks section in tribe where most the breaks promoters seem to post.

And Plump DJ's i wish!

i was checking out their websites today and it doesnt say anything about evil9 or freeland coming to toronto anytime soon. like i said, there's gotta be SOME fucking way to go around legal "problems" concerning plump dj's. child rapists are getting slap on the wrists for fucks sake.

gimme a fucking break !

like that

I had no idea they used to have breaks in the orange room every week! I must've just missed this.

see thats where you're wrong. this is actually a way of life, not just a phase. we breathe, eat, sleep, drink and fuck breaks. i used to work out 6 days a week so that i could do some power moves and i fucking hate working out. breaks reshaped my life in the best way possible

do you think tribal was just some phase????

breaks community in toronto and around is fucking huge. trust me its anything but a phase.

d-monic had a weekly residency at the charlies back in the day.

orange room was ours for any bigger event, 7-10 times a year. and now??? NOTHING.

fuck, you should've seen icey ripping the drink apart!

I never really understood why no one could get them here. I guess one of thems got a record? Makes me even more glad i got the chance to see them at fabric knowing that i probably wont get to again . Do they still tour the US?

It depends who you talk to, like you are a fan of the genera obviously your going to defend it. Just like if i were to tell a trace fan that trance had its prime back in 98/99 and now its shit. Or like if someone told me electro is gay etc to each their own

Yeah Pete, but if you tell someone who's realistic about it, I mean.. Well.. Hey. If the shoe fits, right?

if i understand correctly one of them had some WEED on him and now he's not allowed entrance to canada. i may be wrong but.... LOL what a steaming pile of steaming bullcrap

Posted by activate on Jun-02-2008 20:55:

for the record... last year I booked:
Freq Nasty
Freestylers
bassbin Twins
Afrika Bambaataa

I hate to say it.. but the reason people are aren't throwing breaks events like they used to, is that people aren't supporting them. for the most party, they're not money makers, and the big breaks names want too much money now.. which is not feasible for events in Toronto.

Though my tastes have evolved slightly over the years, I still love the music... but not enough to lose money to bring anyone here.

i was at all those gigs, 2007 was good, i was talking about this year. i cant believe that its wasnt profitable. that sucks. did maybe 2 breaks gigs at the same night going head to head had anything to do with it?

sasha, i dont do boat cruises. i was there once and i got bored and i couldnt go anywhere else, had to wait 3-4 hours for the boat to dock lol

Are you planning on throwing anymore regular breaks headliner events again this year, or by not profitable enough do you mean stopping them altogether?

as my avatar will confirm, I agree 100% Icey is *by far* my favourite breaks DJ. fun, fun, fun.

I'm pissed no one has brought back Icey yet this year. He and Miyagi were awesome in Gallery last time. FFS, he was in Rochester this weekend...why couldn't someone get him to Toronto too?

Breaks isn't so big in Toronto right now...but I don't think promotion is where it should be. Promotion is way too passive for non-"big names" or events at smaller clubs. Promoters need to be more creative, more responsive and more proactive (not calling out anyone here, just in general).

Posted by DigiNut on Jun-02-2008 22:23:

Toronto's always been lukewarm on breaks. I think the promoters figured they'd give it a shot in '07, didn't make as much money as they'd hoped, and gave up in 2008. Shame.

I'd be on a Plump DJs party like a donkey on a waffle.

Posted by chico on Jun-02-2008 23:11:

i feel like breaks has stagnated a while with few fresh ideas coming in from the top guns on the scene let alone any innovative new talent. as such without development it began to die out, now it's really only alive in house-breaks (which isn't breaks at all as much as everyone pretends) and other broken beat forms like d&b.

we can talk about great breaks artists and for sure there is still talent out there but it feels a to me a lot like everyone ran out of steam and lost interest.

maybe i'm wrong but i don't think toronto hates breaks, it's just a dying scene on its last legs.

even somewhere like fabric as someone already mentioned used to be strong for breaks in at least one room a week. now it appears to have made way to even more d&b, some dubstep, UKgarage-house-breaks stuff (sinden etc) and the like. if the uk can't support regular breaks nights then toronto hasn't got a hope.

I've got one planned for later in the year. Other then that, i won't do any event if i think there is a chance i could lose money...
