wasn't this called the "International Dance Summit" back in 2006?

quote:

On July 1, 2006, Toronto will herald the beginning of a new dawn - the birth of a mega dance event, unlike anything the city has ever witnessed before. As an entirely new concept, IDS will showcase what innovation and insight can do to create a mind-boggling achievement.

http://www.idstoronto.com/

so "mega" and so "unlike anything the city has ever witnessed" that people were ranting and raving about it all over TA 2 years ago.. or not.

ever since the success of the Winter Music Conference in Miami and South American Music Conference in Buenos Aires, & etc. promoters in cities across North America and the globe seem to be embarking on this whole "conference" theme trying to attract local & international artists and the like at a big multidisciplinary event.

let's just hope that Toronto isn't too late getting on the bandwagon..

Great Idea in theory but for club goers it will only work if you get the International DJs in.

I think Toronto is a little late on this....although I think Toronto could be the perfect place for an event like WMC in the summer.

Ya it all looks amazing but with 2 months left and the promise of a huge DJ line up that has not been released yet - it seems sketchy.

This *Could* have potential!

At WMC they have a charity bowling match where the DJs show up and if you buy a ticket you can bowl with Deep Dish and the likes.

I really hope this launches well. It'll be awesome having such a big festival like this.

Hmmmm

Posted by Big Boss on Jun-03-2008 15:53:

There's no way an event like this would work because all the "big guys" are happy enough making money by themselves. To pull something like this off, you need everyone in the scene from top to bottom working together and that's never going to happen.

+1

Not trying to smack the idea here but I agree with others about the whole approach this seems to be taking. The Toronto International Dance Summit billed as a "festival" back in 2006 was nothing more than a collection of parties at various clubs, some of which were already scheduled to occur long before the event was announced. Patrons had the ability to purchase an "all access pass" to admit them into "participating" parties on a specified night. My initial thoughts when I checked out the SMC site was that it seemed to be going down this road. Moreover, the whole moniker of 'SMC' has already been used in similar festivals in San Francisco and Shanghai. I think a more original name that highlights the fact that this is a "Toronto" based event might have been more effective at creating a more unique brand identity.

With all due respect to Sound Academy aka. The Docks as a club/venue, I just don't see it being ideal as a main stage central venue for this sort of thing given its limited access by public transit and not-so-central location within the city. A nice large open air outdoor venue used in the likes of Movement at DEMF would probably be more appropriate, although one has to ask whether again the 'city' would ever sanction it unless it was somehow politically motivated as seen in the Marijuana (Freedom Festival) march or Pride.

There's nothing wrong with the fact that Toronto is trying to get on the whole conference bandwagon late in the game, but I certainly agree that something of this scale requires very thorough planning and most importantly the combined efforts of all the big promoters within the city. And as history has shown us in the past, club politics and infighting can sometimes be a far greater impediment for success for this scene than gaining acceptance and legitimacy by the municipal government and the Toronto public as a whole.

I think this has a lot of potential....I hope it does well..festivals like this can never be bad for a city..

Posted by junkie_vince on Jun-03-2008 16:44:

Personally I like the idea but if the city doesnt back it I think itll flop or itll be nowhere near what they are advertising it to be.

Posted by chico on Jun-03-2008 16:56:

pretty sure the real summer music conference is in IBIZA

doubt they will have much luck getting enough serious talent off the island to toronto in late july to really make this successful

I think people have to keep in mind that the first year of any event of this callibre (and with new ideas in general) is bound to have kinks to work out, as they're not going to know exactly how to organize and execute everything just by seeing how other people have done it.

I think it's a great idea, and wish them luck this year, and hope that this'll last.
