HNIC Theme R.I.P.

Dear Friends:

It's a sad day.

Effective immediately following the last playoff game of this season the CBC will cease using the Hockey Night in Canada Theme.

A more formal announcement follows below, but first a small but important message... Dolores Claman, composer of the song, would like to express her deepest gratitude to all the many kind people who over the years have said how much the song means to them.

Each time someone called or emailed to use the song in their wedding ceremony, or school project, or family event... or just to tell a story about great childhood memories, it's been a tremendous honour. And though we've received many, none will ever be forgotten.

We will continue with our sheet music, CD, etc. as long as we can and as long as you continue to ask for it.

Although, I believe they will have to bring it back because of fan outrage.

It'll be like the time when they refused to re-sign Ron MacLean's contract... public outrage saw to it that he stayed... HNIC theme is even more iconic!

"I know we've been having discussions," Keay said this morning. In 2004, a group that includes Claman filed a lawsuit seeking $2.5 million in damages, charging the CBC with breach of copyright and breach of contract. Claman, Vine Maple Music and Copyright Music and Visuals claimed that the public network used the hockey theme without authorization both inside and outside Canada, sold it for use as a cellphone ring tone and altered the arrangement without approval. In the statement of claim, the plaintiffs say they signed a new deal that spelled out how the music could be used when CBC took over production of hockey broadcasts from Molson Breweries in 1998. Ciccone said in the website statement that a resolution of the lawsuit is not a precondition of any new licence agreement. Toronto-based Copyright Music and Visuals, a division of Absolute Productions Inc., bills itself as a service for music and copyright clearance with more than 20 years' experience.

its 500.00 for each game it was used in.....that adds up to a lot of money over a hockey season.

fee was the same for 10 years + a similar offer to renew = CBC douchebaggery.

it's not insignificant, but I'm wagering that $500 a pop is a drop in the water in relation to overall production costs.

Can't they just remake a MIDI version and play that with no legal repercussions?

Perhaps its time for the composer to renegotiate a lower rate with the CBC?

I heard it was $500 PER PLAY not PER GAME. Also, there are countless commercials that use the music as well that advertise hockey night in canada.

Either way if they are about to lose the contract its best to renegotiate. Even if its half its still better than Zero!

CBC is going to be innundated by viewer's demanding it keep the music...and she is unlikely to walk away from guaranteed income, even if it drops.

whatever. I gave up on hockey after the labour stoppage and the Leafs continued unwillingness to field a competitve team or hire competent management and staff.

Raps run a much better franchise (from a fan point of view).

This is effing stupid! I'm soooooo off this! The CBC theme song is Canada's freakin national anthem!!! This cannot happen... i won't let it!! This is bringing a tear to my eye...

Well, if you think about it, Hockey Night in Canada is only played on Saturday Nights on CBC. They usually only play it at the very beginning of the broadcast, if I remember correctly. Hockey season starts October til May. 8 months = 32 weeks. $500x32 = $16000.
So lets say they're paying her roughly $15000-$20000/year for royalties on the theme song...that's really nothing in a CBC budget, it's like keeping a part-time employee.

if they cannot come to an agreement the CBC has stated they will hold a contest for the new theme song......I smell a Deadmau5 entry into this.
