Is Progressive House the new Trance?

i've been falling out of the trance scene in the last year or 2, and favouring house. However, i've takin a liking to progressive house (at least as its defined by beatport) As its typically a trancy melody at a slower 130bpm or there-abouts. I find 140bpm very unexciting these days as theres a lot of 'been there done that' and after many years in that scene, am starting to move on.

Just wondering if anyone has fallen in the same path of favouring the progressive house genre to still hold onto their trance fix.

In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove.
And from this groove came the groove of all grooves.
And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack declared,
"Let there be house!"
and house music was born.
"I am, you see, I am the creator, and this is my house!
And, in my house there is only house music.

I like both, I still love the 135-140 BPM range. But slower stuff is good too like Dash Berlin - Till the sky falls down, Andain - Beautiful Things, etc.

This has been covered a few times in the past and to me I will always remain true to 138+bpm as real "Trance".

Yes the trends are moving and prog house is more and more becoming "modern day trance". I believe it's kind of boring to be honest, the energy isn't the same.

Prog house (trancey prog house) gets a big MEH from me.......

its all too slow for me.

I don't really think the bmp count has as much to do with it being trance or prog, as much as the structure. I could have seen this thread started in 2002, when progressive-trance was huge, but not now.

In short, no prog is not the new trance.

Prog HOUSE FTW!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Enrick on Jun-11-2008 15:16:

epic trance ftw

Posted by adi26 on Jun-11-2008 15:50:

Yea, I could agree with what you saying. Most of the new trance we hear are on the slower side than it was before... Epic is transitioning into prog. for sure. But, Trance will always be Trance - it's my first love...

Posted by iLLnaDa on Jun-11-2008 15:51:

prog is good for the soul

Posted by TranceGrooves on Jun-11-2008 15:57:

No.

Prog house is very different than Trance. You cant really compare the 2. It's one thing to not enjoy Trance any more which is quite fine, it happens, but do not compliment it with Prog house. Thats insulting to Trance AND Prog house

I voted "no" cuz I still likes my hands-in-the-air epic stuff but the recent Deadmau5 tracks and Gareth Emery podcasts, and even Tiesto podcasts has a lot of prog house which I've been enjoying immensely. I would agree that the popularity of that sound will take over that of epic high-BPM trance (if it hasn't already).

Agreed. There's nothing like super-banging trance. PVD, Armin, Sean Tyas, A&B, etc etc. mmmmmm...

I'm getting really into the prog house right now, but epic trance will always have my soul. /cheese

What do you consider progressive house? (Give examples please)

To answer the question: No. That said, I tend to prefer prog house, techno, and tech house by far over modern day trance (which I can rarely stand listening to).

some good current examples i guess would be:

dinka - chemistry
EDX - Premiumline
Andy Duguid - Don't Belong

All these ones are very trancey.

I find this is more the 'trendy' prog house that's getting played out by the big trance djs - kinda dry stuff IMO too. I just think it's another one of those fads that's running along; people need to learn to get their own taste and producers ought to start doing their own thing more often.

To me, it looks like those that realized they'd played out the same generic 140 bpm crap are now flocking to this "new" style in order to kill it off 'til they find the next trend. I'd say trance has, unfortunately, become a largely sheepish genre. Is this the new trance? I wouldn't say so. Is it what many people are flocking to in order to try and make a quick buck because it's trendy? Probably.

I'd also have to say some of this stuff really gives "prog house" a bad name, but that's just my thought (I realize I'm being terribly critical, my apologies if I've hurt anyone's feelings ).

**That said, Andy Duguid is a very talented producer, but that's neither here nor there

i like a lot of types of prog house but my least favourite is the tranceish kind (ie. jay lumen - ultra)

but the word progressive can mean pretty much anything... there are so many directions of prog, but when a certain sound is no longer groundbreaking and gets played out then what genre does it become? blah

'dry' is just your personal preference as Myself and others i'm sure would say otherwise. It has nothing to do with people 'finding their own taste' as i'm a musician and enjoy dozens of musical genres. Don't sound so narrow minded, as life is boring when you stay exclusive to only certain things. I've always liked this slower sound, its just been produced more heavily in the last few years.

Is this genre a fad? well who knows, only time will tell if i look back on this music 10 years later and hit play. Although i still enjoy almost all the music i grew up with since the mid-90s, And will bust out a classic trance cd from time to time too.

I'm saying it's become dry from formulaic repetition, not because the 'style' is dry.

And it absolutely is about people finding their own taste because far too often I hear a new artist saying how much they want to copy a certain style/sound. When the Deadmau5 8th note trend hit, all the new producers I'm in contact with said "HOW DO YOU DO THAT?" - rather than learning how to actually engineer their sounds and develop their own style, they just want to immitate.

I'm not narrow minded; I simply call a spade a spade. I listen to many different genres, and don't care who listens or doesn't listen to them. I'm just tired of people flocking to something because it's become the latest trend. [/rant]

Quivver - Surin ... A new track that came out not too long ago, it is progressive house, but it does have a little trancy side to it.

progressive became the "new" trance in about 2001/2002... then electro house became the new progressive in 2006/2007

LOL, I was going to say...

Prog became the new trance in '02.
Tech became the new prog in '04.
Tribal became the new tech in '05.
Electro became the new tribal in '06.
Minimal became the new electro in '07.

It never ends. Get with the times people!
