Importance of 'monitor' speakers?

Need some advice here.

I've got a set-up in my basement, 2X DN-s1000, a DNX1500S mixer, and some good denon headphones.... but I am lacking in the speaker department.

I used to use computer speakers, 5.1 with a gigantic sub, and those were pretty decent, but now I am out of town for the summer and am using my dads old amp+speaker combination and they arent really in the best shape.

Whenever I mix I have to do it in my headphones because the sound is far better and I can hear the 2 tracks far more clearly.

My question is, if I invest in some of those rather expensive 'monitor' speakers will it solve my problems? will I be able to mix with those as opposed to havign to do it in my headphones like I do now?

will monitor speakers also be better than my computer speaker set up? (which is actually pretty decent, its one of those $300 logitech ones)

and also, can anyone recommend some good speakers that are more low-mid price range as I dont have like $1000 to spend or anything like that.

What I've been thinking about is buying an actual floor monitor (you can use it as an actual speaker in a PA setup if you so desire)...something like you would see in a band/stage setup, just so we are clear. Not recording monitors, which I will never understand why people would buy for DJing.

JBL makes one model I've seen for under ~500 +shipping (thats powered). And tons of other companies make floor monitors as well. You probably can buy one used + amp for cheap.

Wonder if Denon makes one? =P

im currently using two krk rp5s and a rp10 sub.

i understand the argument against monitors...why try and have a flat frequency response when at a club or gig you wont hear a flat response, or something of that nature.

i got the krks since they seemed very clear and detailed to my ears. i think of myself as a perfectionist and i would like to hear even the slightest mistake if I make one. in my mind, i like to think that if i can get a smooth transition off studio monitors, if i ever use anything else...i know my mixes will be on point.

but thats just my views on why i have studio monitors

My dad knew some guy... at denon or something, so I got everything like close to 70% off!

so yeah it would be cool if denon has some!

I mix in the headphones because I prefer it. I have studio monitors but I still almost exclusively mix in the cans. So, it may or may not help you. Just depends on what works best.

yeah I have a feeling this will happen after I invest like 600 buying monitors....

I always just wonder what my mixes sound like on the speakers (when I am mixing in my headphones)....

but when i do mix just with my speakers it doesnt sound all that great..... mainly because my speakers suck and I cant hear shit properly so I cant mix properly

BTW are there any like 'Pro DJs' or whatever you wanna call them, that mix in the headphones when they are doing a gig at a club.. I cant say I've seen it

david which headphones do you own?

its not overly important but i prefer it over mixing through headphones.

you dont see many pros mix through headphones because they usually have good monitors set up , ive seen m.i.k.e mix through head phones because the moniter speakers where shite.

Honestly, I can't even remember which model (I'm at work). They're Audio Technica, nothing terribly fancy. But I've used various DJ cans and it's just how I prefer to do things.
