12-Yr.-Old Chases Down Lemonade Stand Robber
Wednesday June 18, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
In a world where few things shock us anymore, this may be a new low in lows - being accused of robbing a 12-year-old girl's lemonade stand.

This dastardly deed was committed in Terre Haute, Indiana on Tuesday, but you'll be pleased to know that the youngster behind the drinking establishment didn't let the guy get away with it.

Dominique Morefield had already taken in $17.50 from her efforts of selling the refreshments on a hot day when cops allege an 18-year-old who wasn't a customer approached her homemade headquarters. "The guy came up and was, like, 'Give me your money,'" she recalls. "I was shocked."

The stranger took the cash and dashed but the plucky 12-year-old - who was running the stand with some friends - reacted instinctively to the outrage, and immediately took off after the thief in hot pursuit. "It was just my immediate reaction to chase after him," she explains.

The man ran into a nearby home and the child who refused to allow the injustice picked up a nearby phone and called police. They responded immediately and suddenly this little crime turned into something else - a major standoff, as cops on bullhorns tried to persuade the suspect to come out of his hideout.

After 45 minutes and with no real choice, he emerged and was taken into custody. Steve Tryon may be accused in a little crime but the charges he's facing are major. He's been slapped with a felony robbery count and held on $50,000 bond. He remains in a local jail.

Now Morefield is a local hero and her friends are speaking a phrase you'd rather not hear coming from those still so young: 'what's this world coming to?'

"I didn't think anyone would come up to a lemonade stand and steal," 12-year-old Fred Erstine opines. "That's really low."

I love how piss poor these articles are written ... sure a story like this can't qualify as award winning journalism but still have to recognition for that lil' 12 year old who stuck it to the thief

True story that, although I'd say more around the 12 bucks mark. A gallon and a half

*points at self*

I think saving me $5 is more important than keeping any monster across the ocean from me at bay.
