Question for DJ's in college
So i'm ganna be going off to college soon, and im kinda worried that there isnt going to be enough space, or that ppl will come in and mess with all me gear. What do you all do that live in a dorm and go to college?
fuck chicks
I did not bring my DJ gear to college. Not nearly enough space in my dorm room.
If I had gear back then I wouldn't have brought it. Too many risks.
i had my gear on my table.. i have cases for all my shit, and i have my laptop on top of my gear..
i just made it known to my roomate not to fuck with my gear, sometimes when i was paranoid i would disconnect some of the cables, or purposely connect them wrong
Is your roommate a twat? Are you planning on partying in your room a lot? Do you drink a fair bit now and anticipate doing even more so upon arrival at University? Are potential blackouts a real concern?
If you answered yes to any of the above, don't bring your gear. Enjoy college.

ususally when you get out of the dorms (if thats where your staying), once you get an apartment with your buddies...that'll be the best time to bring your gear with you
I brought my gear to my dorm room. It took up a bit of space, but I'm very glad that I brought it. We drank and had small parties in my room (RA was pretty relaxed) and it never got fucked with. Just let them know to not mess with it or put food or drink next to it, and you'll be okay.
I became an RA so I could get my own room with two desks. One was for turntables, and the other was for pretending to do work on.
I took it all and loads of cds and vinyl too.
Going to a dorm, do not bring your gear! Theres plenty of things u need to be doing instead of worrying about your gear, and people are going to fuck with it...period. As mentioned, when u get your own place, then bring it. Enjoy the dorm life and all that comes with it.
Don't you get a room with a lock? Just lock your room at all times while you aren't in it, and try to refrain from getting so shitfaced that you leave the door wide open while you pass out in the bathtub.
Alternatively, get some flight cases that you can padlock.

I mean an individual bedroom with it's own individual lock.
i had my dj gear in my dorm room for two years with two different roomates and not once did i have a problem. Having the turntables in the room was a great way to break the ice during freshman year and makes room parties more fun.
On a final note, most people make roomates to be a lot worse than they really are. I mean, if you are anti-social and sit in your room all day, of course you guys will hate each other. However, if you are barely in the room and are only there to sleep and possibly relax for a second or two, you should be fine. People like having space, and as long as you don't blatantly trying to sabotage your roomates living experience, your roomate should be fine and willing to respect your equipment.
I don't know about your DJ equipment, but I had my PS2 and guitar stolen from my room when I lived in the dorms. Other than that make sure you go to class. It is the easiest thing to do and makes the biggest difference.

is it a dorm you're moving into or an apartment? some of those dorms you won't even be able to walk around in if you dump all your gear in there.

The dorm I was in was small only things large we can fit in there was 1 large dorm fridge and tv and 1 computer other then that it is cramped with 2 people. Later I moved into single then I was able bring my DJ gear but I didn't until I moved off campus to house with 4 others and used my gear there for parties.
college is hectic enough without having to worry about your gear getting stolen, even if you make it a point to lock your door anytime you go out, you have a roomate, and people make mistakes, don't let his mistake cost you an assload of equipment
even if you put it in a lockbox and think people won't fuck with it, there is still a chance that people would just TAKE the lockbox... this is college, people do pretty grimey shit here
