Man Tries To Rob Convenience Store With Palm Frond

A bandit got away empty-handed after trying to rob a Volusia County convenience store with a palm frond.

Investigators said Gelando Olivieri, 33, went to V&F Discount Beverage on Voorhis Avenue and then threatened to stab the clerk with the frond if he didn't hand over money.

Another worker then helped push Olivieri out of the store. He recognized the man and led police right to him.

Olivieri is now charged with armed robbery.

Police believe he is a transient.
