Looking for free video convertor

I've got some mpg files that won't work in Movie Maker (I'm guessing they're probably mpg2 or something.) Does anyone know of any decent video convertors so that I can convert them to mpg1 or even avi?

Normally I'd just steal something good, but this is for my workstation so I need freeware.

Cheers.

www.giveawayoftheday.com

There's at least one per week or every two weeks that get put on there.

You get a fully registered version, legally.

Cheers. But when I convert my 900Mb MPEG2 file to avi it gives a projected file size of 37Gb. Can someone tell me what Frame Rate, Colour Depth and Compression settings I could choose to get a sensible file size? A lot of the options to choose from are alien to me.

Thanks.

AVI isn't a compression format. It's just a wrapper that contains a compression format for video & sound.

I don't remember exactly how VD works, but considering the final filesize, you haven't choose any compression for your video.

If I remember right, there is a video menu where you can specify a video compression. Choose a codec on the list (divx, xvid, ...). Do the same for the sound.

Then -> File , Save As AVI.

edit : I've found some screenshots on google (I'm on a MAC so I can't install VD to help you more ).
1) Video -> Full Processing Mode.
2) Video -> Compress

2) Audio -> Full Processing Mode
2) Audio -> Compression

or Source Audio if you don't want to compress the sound

Yea I've found the list where you can specify video compression. I just don't know to what extent the effect will be in choosing a certain one - scale to choose from is massive.

I'll have a better look through them tomorrow, it's time to clock out now. w00t!

Mikey, for ALL video conversion/compression/transcode/etc needs, www.doom9.org is your best friend. They have TONS of guides on there for this stuff. They also use ALL freeware tools, and the tools are linked on the site.
