How often do you produce?

I just started maybe less then a month ago producing on logic pro 7.I"Ve been churning out alot of tunes(though very amateurish sounding).I deffinetly want to maybe slow down though so I can fit them all on my music profile on myspace

How about you guys how long does it take to produce a track and how often do you do it?

Posted by Yin on Jun-26-2008 19:36:

Is it just me or have I seen exactly this thread before with exactly the same title?
Anyway.. It really depends. Thats all I can say..

From two weeks to many months.. Often I'll pick up again stuff I worked on a long time ago.. so that when you start over again you have a certain basis to build upon, and a bedrock of motivation.

sometimes in a fit of production fury, i'll bang thru something in a day?

sometimes things take FOREVER... as i like to re listen to stuff to make sure i like what i've done

all depends

daily. couple hours before work, couple hours afterwards.

Yes, to become serious, it's a good idea to spend a good amount of each day working on something music-related: composing, learning techniques, improving processes, putting sound together. If it's ever something you want to do professionally, it can't be something that only takes up a few hours each week. There aren't many professional fulltime jobs which only take up a few hours each week.

Once a day, if you count listening to a half-finished track 3 times and adjusting the position of a single hi-hat as producing.

Otherwise... rarely.

haha and me as well!

before, when i started out. I made tunes every single day. Very amatuer ones at best though but when i started becoming serious, everything became a technical outlook when making music. I was always trying to be the perfectionist of going "oh this doesn't sound too well" or nitpicking at things over and over again. The most recent track that i finished making was with a friend online. Staying up all night till 7 am for a week helped out but sucked so bad

I can stare at a blank screen for weeks and then suddenly whip out a track in just hours. It's either all or nothing for me.

Too much but not enough.

For the last few months everyday, sometimes more.
Today I woke up and first thing I did was load FL to work on a track I was working on last night when I went to bed.

Then I came home from work and right back to it.
I'm not like that everyday but when I get a bug up my ass its pretty compulsive.

For a track, honestly thats a huge problem for me.
I'll work on a track for about 8-10 hours (maybe 1-3 days) go back to work on it and I'm completely sick of it.

I make myself sick of my own tracks. Maybe 1 out of every 20 tracks will survive a little longer, I'm sick of hearing it but I still think it has something to it so I'll post it here, get ridiculed, than start another track =].

My recent solution has been making the melodies last instead of first.
I always use to do melodies first but now I work on strictly the kicks, bass, percs, fx, noise, etc. I can loop a beat for ever but its not till I throw synths in that I get annoyed.

Even the best melodies out there, like Whiplash by JFK. I LOVE that melody but if I looped it on my computer for 4 hours trying to turn knobs to fatten the synth I'd lose my mind just like I do with mine.

Which I still can't understand how the pros tolerate. Its one giant mindfuck. First 15 mins melody sounds awesome, a few hours later your suicidal listening to it.

thats the best way imo

Sometimes i start up the project and adjust a channel with 3 volume knob range and get back to gaming

I'm basically the same way.

Although instead of staring at a blank screen I'll mostly be making beats endlessly. It's only when I start putting the synths in that the track really starts coming together.

Agreed 100%, I am just the same, its about coincidence when you start it up a few weeks later, either i get bored after 5 minutes or it turns into something

As long as people are happy with where they're currently at, with their current rate of development and output, it's fine. Life is all about priorities. Just because someone likes producing trance, doesn't mean they don't like their job as a lawyer (for example) even more. Obviously, they'd spend much more time reading about legal issues, learning new distinctions which will enable them to do their job more effectively.

In the end, the way we spend each hour of each day reflects what is important to us. Time is precious, we only get one allotment of it. If one has made a decision to dedicate one's life to something, then their life will reflect that...they will work consistently towards what they want every day. It's not a question of whether they "feel like it" or not. That's not part of the equation any more. Their lives are structured so they consistently work towards their goals. They love what they do, and don't let their contribution be determined by their feelings or other desires. Absolutely, it's important to have a balanced life, to be fit and healthy, to have a decent income, to have great relationships with people, to have an awareness of oneself and one's world and to look to grow each day. But the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing, whatever that is for each person.

How often do I produce?

Let's see - full-time job (~50 hrs/wk), wife, and 1-yo son. You do the math.

Surprisingly, I typically find several hours each evening to at least stare at my computer and synthesizers. Like everybody else, some days I'm productive, others days not so much. It typically takes me about a month or two to finish a song, but that's primarily because most of my songs feature vocalists, so our schedules really determine how quickly we can finish a song. If I'm making an instrumental track on my own, it can take anywhere from about a week to several months.

if i was effective i could probably get a few hours or more each day but i waste my time fixing on my computer, cleaning up HDs, making backup-procedures, all kinds of shit, and posting here instead. i waste alot of time looking for cool gear and buying/selling stuff i dont need, read articles +++. just kinda learning alot. also i have some work to do in my apartment to fix the achoustics, once thats ok things will change i promisse . also there are some work with my small mp3-label but like email and uploading tracks, making website etc but not much tho. mostly nice work. but i should def use more time making music. im a bit tired of my current sequencer also so im trying to learn something pluss learning my hardware better. then i have work, friends, gf and shit to follow up too, so im mostl of the time suffering from stomach-problems and sour throat due to stress. and its just getting worse as im getting older, the day dont have enough hours anymore.

Whenever it tickles my fancy

Posted by B_man on Jun-28-2008 02:24:

Right now, it's about the average that I post here... sadly...

40-50 hour, full-time job
Full time college for IT/computer programming
1 fiance' who currently lives 1.5 hours away

I, like cryophonik, have more than a fair share of lifestyle burdens. I have produced on track in the last...

[drum roll] /* Or should I say, epic-snare roll */

...

...

...

One track in the last six months
[/drum roll]

UMNnnph -s- UMNnnph -s- UMNnnph -s- UMNnnph -s-

But it's all good. I'm obviously not called to be a major music producer by any means, but I carry burdens to better myself and society... it's not all about me, anyways.

Maybe one day I will have this college stuff done and suddenly find myself with more time than I know what to do with.

Posted by AuxiliaryInput on Jun-28-2008 07:13:

I used to do it every day. But now I do it once or twice every week. I don't know what's happening to me.

I'm not planning to become serious or anything, but maybe it would be nice.. I don't know.

wow ur from lillestrm, awesome

Posted by TRNG on Jun-29-2008 04:53:

really starting to feel like there aren't enough hours in the day, i spend many hours reading up on here and learning new stuff, it's hard to find time for production though when I'm trying to balance it with sorting new tunes and working on new sets and the like...

honestly i probably spend a good 3 hours everyday either producing or learning more on how to produce proper...
