to be perfectly honest G... I've already began saving money, checking flights, and cities that are holding matches, and hotel accomodations... here it goes...

FLIGHTS:

the earliest any airline will book is about 11 months prior to the date of departure. It's about a 20 hour or so flight to Johannesburg. and will cost somewhere around $3000 round trip. from what i've found on major airlines at least.

LOCATIONS:

Host Cities on the ocean = Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, and Durban
Host Cities inland = Mangaung/Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Rustenburg, Nelspruit, Tshwane/Pretoria, and Polokwane

there are 10 stadiums holding matches in the 9 cities... Johannesburg has 2 stadiums.

Johannesburg, Rustenburg, and Pretoria are all within an hour or less driving distance of each other. Everything else is pretty spread out.

TICKETS:

tickets packages are being set up now, and ticket sales will be open to the public sometime in 2009, with ticket distribution occurring in 2010. I'm guessing it's going to be very very expensive, probably a few hundred per ticket.

They are going to print about 3,000,000 tickets for the 64 matches.
1,000,000 go to sponsors, the teams, and the FIFA family
1,000,000 go to international visitors (us)
1,000,000 go to South Africa (to be spread throughout Africa as a whole)

ACCOMODATIONS:

South Africa is bordered by Mozambique, ZImbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Swazilnad, and the nation of Lesotho is located within the borders.

Personally, I suggest staying in a city that has a stadium, just to make things easier. I dont think anyone wants to be stuck traveling through Africa more than they have to.

based on my initial calculations, a 2 person room for a month will cost something like $2000 give or take... the few hotels i found with websites that gave room rates was something like 75-100 bucks a night for a standard room with 2 beds.

OTHER:

1 US dollar us currently worth about 8 South African Rand
fifa.com has some sort of hospitality program you can register for

anything else I left out can probably be found at www.fifa.com/worldcup

there it is... I'm so freaking serious about going.

hey, if people are serious then i'm all for coordinating a group trip... i know for a fact that hotels and airlines give discounted rates to large groups (25+ im guessing).

we've got 2 years to get a group together, etc. the more the merrier. maybe there are whole houses to rent... then someone could bring their CDJ's and we wouldnt ever have to leave!!

plus, ive always wanted to go on an African safari.. really really bad. there is so much to do when out of the country. im getting more and more excited every day

Posted by trunks1022 on Jun-30-2008 05:24:

when FIFA is looking for back-ups to RSA in 2010, then you know the signs aren't good...

Awesome!! Always looking for a reason to travel someplace new, and even moreso major events to plan overseas trips around and World Cup is as good as any . Europe is an easy trip and already a popular vacation destination whereas it's not too often the average person ever really has a reason to go visit South Africa. Sounds worth it to me. Plus who knows, maybe there'll be some solid acts spinning down there

Dude, that is awesome I would looove to go, but $3000 JUST for the flight? jesus a whole vaca should cost that much!!!

I would def go and be decked out in the orange!!

Yeah, $3k is definitely pretty steep just for the flight. I've been considering an Asia trip for the end of the year and a multi-city round trip from NY to Taiwan/Hong Kong to The Philippines, to Tokyo, and back to NY is still only around $2.5k. I'm not a big fan of flying out thousands of miles and only hitting up one place. It costs about the same to go to South Africa as it does to set up a multi-city round trip from NYC to Morocco, to Cairo, to Dubai (another trip I'd really like to take!) .

Still, I don't think I'd be motivated to plan a trip to South Africa anytime soon if not for an event like this so I'll definitely be keeping it in mind around this time next year.

Posted by The Vza on Jun-30-2008 17:18:

im just realizing that the 3K airline tickets I check were for flight reservations 2 weeks in advance...

1 year in advance reservations would be $1700, so that cuts that price a lot. my b

um... i dont want to start a race argument here or anything. but haven't MOST nations had some sort of racist policy at some point? the USA is still SUPER racist when it comes to almost every creed or religion. there is someone hating. I mean... is the rest of the world supposed to automatically forgive our government because we haven't had Jim Crow laws since the 60's???

there is neo colonialism going on throughout the world, and its fostered by almost every industrialized nation there is...

you should be more pissed about china getting the olympics

Posted by gmoney44 on Jun-30-2008 22:48:

isnt almost every1 in South Africa white?

Mac Zimms ftw!

I agree with you almost totally. I am pissed China got the games but We was talking about the World Cup. I aint being nasty towards you, it's just that I feel strongly about the way SA has treated black people for decades.

I got a shit load more to say but it aint for here..

i know i know... this is the kind of topic i could get balls deep in. i didnt think you were being nasty in the first place and i definitely wasnt taking it personal.

i agree that nations with recent histories of human rights violations should not be rewarded through the prominence of hosting global events.

but, i just accept life on life's terms and try and make an impact where i can.

plus, dont forget that SA hated hard on Indian's too, which I am (my dad's from India). they called us coolies. But how long does the world wait to forgive but never forget?

I don't hold a grudge against England, even though nearly all of the crown jewels were originally stolen from India...

ok, enough outta me. Although id love to read your response, steve. you seem like a well informed individual that could actually have an intelligent discussion on this topic. and hey, it is the WORLD cup thread. so lets discuss the world. shit. we have 2 years to plan the trip. something has to keep this thread going

The English were ****s. I'm as Patriotic as they come but I will never defend or try to make excuses for the vast amount of pain that We have caused to this planet.

India however, I remember having to write an essay at school about Englands justification of the Amritsar massacre. Since that very time I joined an anarchist organisation called "class war". Most of it was anti-vivisection and vegetarian bullshit although the bit I liked was beating up raccists..

Oh well. Again, not the right place or time. Kicking the shit outta Skins ruled though...
